Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Prototyping of Automated Guided Vehicle for Teaching Practical Mechatronics
This paper presents an innovative approach to teaching mechatronics at the bachelor’s level, using the design and construction of an Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) as a comprehensive example of a mechatronic system. The course, titled Laboratory of Electronic Systems, is part of a newly established professionalizing bachelor’s degree program at the University of Pisa, focused on techniques for mechanics and production. This program was developed to meet industry demands for technically skilled personnel with an engineering-related background but without the need for a full traditional engineering education. The course is designed to provide students with hands-on experience, integrating fundamental concepts from mechanical, electronic, and control engineering, along with software development. The curriculum emphasizes practical applications rather than theoretical depth, aligning with the program’s goal of preparing students for operational roles in industrial settings. We present the course structure, educational objectives, and the interdisciplinary nature of mechatronics as addressed in this teaching approach. A dedicated section outlines the critical steps involved in the AGV prototype development, highlighting practical challenges and learning opportunities. The effectiveness of the course is assessed through the evaluation of student projects, specifically via a technical report and a final discussion on the design of a mechatronic system. The results demonstrate the value of a project-based learning approach in equipping students with the practical skills and knowledge required for careers in mechatronics and industrial automation
Electro-thermal model-based design of bidirectional on-board chargers in hybrid and full electric vehicles
In this paper, a model-based approach for the design of a bidirectional onboard charger (OBC) device for modern hybrid and fully electrified vehicles is proposed. The main objective and contribution of our study is to incorporate in the same simulation environment both modelling of electrical and thermal behaviour of switching devices. This is because most (if not all) of the studies in the literature present analyses of thermal behaviour based on the use of FEM (Finite Element Method) SWs, which in fact require the definition of complicated models based on partial derivative equations. The simulation of such accurate models is computationally expensive and, therefore, cannot be incorporated into the same virtual environment in which the circuit equations are solved. This requires long waiting times and also means that electrical and thermal models do not interact with each other, limiting the completeness of the analysis in the design phase. As a case study, we take as reference the architecture of a modular bidirectional single-phase OBC, consisting of a Totem Pole-type AC/DC converter with Power Factor Correction (PFC) followed by a Dual Active Bridge (DAB) type DC/DC converter. Specifically, we consider a 7 kW OBC, for which its modules consist of switching devices made with modern 900 V GaN (Gallium Nitrade) and 1200 V SiC (Silicon Carbide) technologies, to achieve maximum performance and efficiency. We present a procedure for sizing and selecting electronic devices based on the analysis of behaviour through circuit models of the Totem Pole PFC and DAB converter in order to perform validation by using simulations that are as realistic as possible. The developed models are tested under various operating conditions of practical interest in order to validate the robustness of the implemented control algorithms under varying operating conditions. The validation of the models and control loops is also enhanced by an exhaustive robustness analysis of the parametric variations of the model with respect to the nominal case. All simulations obtained respect the operating limits of the selected devices and components, for which its characteristics are reported in data sheets both in terms of electrical and thermal behaviour
Design of adaptive controller exploiting learning concepts applied to a BLDC-based drive system
This work presents an innovative control architecture, which takes its ideas from the theory of adaptive control techniques and the theory of statistical learning at the same time. Taking inspiration from the architecture of a classical neural network with several hidden levels, the principle is to divide the architecture of the adaptive controller into three different levels. Each level implements an algorithm based on learning from data and therefore we can talk about learning concepts. Each level has a different task: the first to learn the required reference to the control loop; the second to learn the coefficients of the state representation of a model of the system to be controlled; and finally, the third to learn the coefficients of the state representation of the actual controller. The design of the control system is reported from both a rigorous and an operational point of view. As an application example, the proposed control technique is applied on a secondorder non-linear system. We consider a servo-drive based on a brushless DC (BLDC) motor, whose dynamic model considers all the non-linear effects related to the electromechanical nature of the electric machine itself, and also an accurate model of the switching power converter. The reported example shows the capability of the control algorithm to ensure trajectory tracking while allowing for disturbance rejection with different disturbance signal amplitude. The implementation complexity analysis of the new controller is also proposed, showing its low overhead vs. basic control solutions
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Design of an observer-based architecture and non-linear control algorithm for cogging torque reduction in synchronous motors
The problem of cogging torque is due to a magnetic behavior, intrinsic to synchronous machines and due to the presence of permanent magnets themselves. Cogging torque is a significant problem when the servo drive is used for applications where high precision in terms of position control is required. In this paper we present a method of cogging torque reduction by means of a control technique based on mathematical modeling of the cogging phenomenon itself in order to exploit this knowledge directly in the controller design. The mathematical model is inserted in the dynamic model of the synchronous machine in order to exploit the feedback linearization, providing an expression of the control law in which the contribution of the deterministic knowledge of the phenomenon is directly present. The cogging phenomenon physically depends on the angular position of the rotor, as well as the deterministic model we use to define the control vector. This makes it interesting and innovative to determine whether the control algorithm can be inserted within a sensor-less architecture, where rotor position and angular velocity measurements are not available. For this purpose, we present the use of an extended Kalman filter (EKF) in the continuous-time domain, discussing the advantages of an observer design based on a dynamic motor model in three-phase and direct-square axes. Results are presented through very accurate simulation for a trajectory-tracking problem, completing with variational analysis in terms of variation of initial conditions between EKF and motor dynamics, and in terms of parametric variation to verify the robustness of the proposed algorithm. Moreover, a computational analysis based on Simulink Profiler is proposed, which provides some indication for possible implementation on an embedded platform
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
