Itchy Monkey Press
Itchy Monkey Press is an independent publisher specialising in punk rock. Founded by Mike Dines in 2014, with the release of Ted Curtis’ the darkening light (a novel based on the north London anarcho-punk scene of the 1980s), Itchy Monkey then saw the release of the much-awaited Tales From the Punkside (2014), edited by Mike Dines and Greg Bull. Pulling upon prose, poetry, art and the academic to express the everyday in punk, Tales From the Punkside was written in the style of an ‘anarcho-narrative,’ an attempt to present punk in an intelligent and thoughtful light without getting too bogged down by the academic. As such, the volume is purposely accessible with chapters on squatting, women in punk and glue sniffing. As a follow up, Itchy Monkey published ‘Some of Us Scream Some of Us Shout’: Myths, Folklore and Epic Tales of the Anarcho (2015), Alastair Gordon's monograph Crass Reflections (2016), and the third in the ‘Punkside’ trilogy And All Around Us Was Darkness (2017). After a two-year break, the next three publications – all poetry-based volumes – were released, including Factories Run by Robots (2019), Trevor Paviours’ Gagging Order (2019) and Stephen Spencer-Fleet’s I Want Out (2020). The most recent publication is the accompaniment to a Slovenia-based exhibition surrounding the band anarcho-punk band Crass, entitled I’m Not Penny Rimbaud: Who the Hell is Penny Rimbaud? (2021

Crass reflections by Alastair Gordon
An undergraduate monograph of essays originally written in the mid-1990s. The central theme sets up and critically examines the need to examine the work of the anarchist punk band Crass in light of a poverty of discussion of their activities in previous cultural studies writings on punk. Equally, notions of endpoints in underground cultures are put to the question. The broad thesis of the monograph interrogates links between critical theory and Frankfurt school perspectives on art and subversive culture and Neo Marxist accounts of their phylogeny. There is critical discussion of the tension and similarities between Crass and Neo Marxist accounts of the role of dominant ideology (traditional notions of false consciousness/media effect) in contrast to the cultural monopoly of survival needs as the central motor of social reproduction in capitalist culture. The monograph concludes with a discussion of the importance of the legacy of Crass and the need for future research. This monograph was written before the groundswell of punk scholarship in its wake and serves as vindication of its obscure and early importance. It s principle importance lies in the fact that most accounts beyond this work have focussed not on critical theory but instead on historical contextual salience, aesthetic value and biographical detail.
This new edition comprises a new extensive introduction assessing methodological approaches in punk scholarship and examines the stormy DiY publication and contextual history of the original monograph. Moreover expanded versions of an original chapter is included in addition to essays on subversive culture, the 1982 Falklands conflict and an examination of philosophical approaches to repressive technologies
Brazilian riot grrrls: History, reflections and feminist empowerment in girls rock camps
This article brings a brief problematization of women in popular music (more specifically, in Rock), with a focus on introducing the rise of the subculture Riot Grrrl in Brazil until the development of musical and female cooperation camps called "Rock N Roll Camp For Girls ". In this country, such events exist and operate in 3 states: Paraná, São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul, the latter being our focus, called Girls Rock Camp Porto Alegre. Throughout the text, excerpts of interviews with women involved with the subculture Riot Grrrl and Girls Rock Camp in the Latin American country will appear. Finally, we try to understand how aging and the continuity of the subculture is present in these women and how such knowledge reverberates in young girls through music. Our sample consists of 63 respondents from ten Brazilian states, from north to south, between 15 and 47 years of age
