The Etruscan <i>pithos</i> revolution
No full textThis chapter presents a study of pithoi – large Etruscan ceramic vessels for the storage and processing of agricultural produce in Italy in the first millennium BC. A new regional typology is presented along with their distribution in Etruria. The economic life cycle of pithoi is then analysed from their production to their multiple uses and agency to their disposal. Once these have been assessed, the broader economic impact of the adoption of pithoi in the Etruscan economy and society is reconstructed leading to the conclusions that they contributed to economic development and increased social inequality between the seventh and the fifth centuries BC. Pithoi are then considered as providing evidence for economic growth in the context of the urban development of Etruria
An earthquake scenario for the microzonation of Sofia and the vulnerability of structures designed by use of the Eurocodes
No full textThe study of the site effects and the microzonation of a part of the metropolitan Sofia, based on the modelling of seismic ground motion along three cross-sections are performed. Realistic synthetic strong motion waveforms are computed for scenario earthquakes (M 1⁄4 7) applying a hybrid modelling method, based on the modal summation technique and finite differences scheme. The synthesized ground motion time histories are source and site specific. The site amplification is determined in terms of response spectra ratio (RSR). A suite of time histories and quantities of earthquake engineering interest are provided. The results of this study constitute a ‘‘database’’ that describes the ground shaking of the urban area. A case study of experiment-based assessment of vulnerability of a cast-in-situ single storey, industrial, reinforced concrete frame, designed according to Eurocodes 2 and 8 is presented. The main characteristics of damage index and storey drift are discussed for the purposes of microzonation
The Impact on Structural Reforms on Employment Growth and Labour Productivity: Evidence from Bulgaria and Romania
No full textUsing firm-level data from Bulgaria and Romania, this paper addresses a lacuna in the transition literature, namely, the link of firm-level employment turnover with firm-level growth in labour productivity. The results suggest that while net job creation at the firm level was affected by privatization in Bulgaria, privatization in Romania did not have any effect on firm-level employment growth. Further, Olley-Pakes (1996) decomposition indicates that in Bulgaria, over time, resources moved from less productive firms to more productive firms in almost all industries, but that in Romania such a phenomenon was observed in less than half of the industries. At the same time, the Grilliches-Regev (1995) decomposition indicates that in both these countries mobility of labour across firms, i.e., the process of job creation and job destruction at the firm level, contributed more to productivity changes than did other firm-level characteristics and industry-level factors affecting productivity. Finally, we find that the rate of employment changes in Bulgarian firms has a significant impact on the country’s firm-level productivity changes. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Cosmic spherules from metalliferous sediments: a long journey to the seafloor
No full textThe iron cosmic spherules found in the metalliferous sediments of two spreading centers (Mid-Atlantic Ridge and East Pacific Rise) represent different stages of the four-step model suggested by Bi et al. (1993). The occurrence of one spherule with a conic tail and the detailed study of the whole spherule set allow the development of the “Dong Bi” model. If an interplanetary
body (iron or iron-rich stony meteorite) has hypervelocity and enters the Earth’s atmosphere under low incidence angle, the path of its derivates to the Earth’s surface will be long. This will provide possibilities for development of the next, fifth step of the “Dong Bi” model: iron oxide shell reversal and formation of a conic tail. If the flight of the iron oxide spherule continues after the first 4 stages (ablation, oxidation, core protrusion, and core detachment) it reverses with its light hollow part back. The surface layer of the front side of the spherule ablates. The removed liquid droplets, entrained in a trail after the flying spherule, crystallize in the antipodal zone of rarefaction capping the hollow with a conic tail
Understanding Accountability: New Perspectives on a Fractured World
No full textThis book brings clarity and understanding to the concept of accountability through the lens of conceptual political analysis. As the structure of the modern state has become more complex, the architecture of accountability has itself needed to evolve and re-orientate in an attempt to keep pace. This has led to an increased emphasis not on accountability per se but on different kinds or types of accountability. As such, it is argued here that accountability has emerged to become a concept with adjectives and there is a real need to properly understand accountability in an increasingly fractured world. The theoretical and analytical glue that binds all of the chapters in this collection is a commitment to working within the contours of the work of the philosopher, Giovanni Sartori. This is an approach that has been used to tease apart and interrogate a range of concepts including terrorism, governance, coups, gender equality, deliberation, warfare, clientelism, hybrid regimes, democracy, right through to art, love, rape and violence. It is also an approach that facilitates the cultivation of complex debates concerning the limits of conceptual flexibility. The volume consists of twelve chapters, grouped into three main parts. The introductory part provides the foundations for the collection. Part I on Power explores the normative dimensions of accountability as a means to control and regulate power. Part II on Politics focuses inter alia on accountability following a period of crisis and the emergence of new technology such as algorithms. The final part, Part III, on Particularities looks at concepts such as social accountability and what is meant by supplementary accountability. This broad-ranging collection increases the conceptual toolkit that social and political scientists and lawyers can use to interrogate change at a number of levels and in a range of sectors. Whether through a focus on moral, individual or gendered accountability, or through a shift towards clashing, stakeholder or social accountability, there is a clear flow and coherence through the chapters. No full textLa produzione tessile costituisce una delle più antiche attività specializzate, tipicamente specifica rispetto al genere. Le prove archeologiche, iconografiche, letterarie ed etnografiche indicano che, in molte società, la filatura e la tessi- tura erano praticate principalmente dalle donne. In diversi contesti dell’Italia preromana e, più in generale, del Mediterraneo l’artigianato tessile divenne un simbolo della sfera femminile e il contributo delle donne alla comunità come lavoratrici tessili fu segnalato attraverso la deposizione di strumenti da filatura e tessitura nelle loro sepolture. Strumenti da filatura in materiale prezioso, come bronzo, argento, ambra e osso, supportano l’idea che questi strumenti fossero simboli importanti dello status femminile in diverse classi sociali. Le differenze nella distribuzione numerica e tipologica degli strumenti tessili nei contesti funerari sono un riflesso significativo del genere, dello status, dell’abilità artigianale e dell’età dei loro proprietari, mentre i vari cambiamenti registrati in tale distribuzione nel corso del tempo indicano trasformazioni sociali ed economiche iniziate in Italia durante il VII secolo a.C

No full textFeatures of the embodiment of the author’s position in the essay by I. A. Goncharov “Pepiniere” are considered. The relevance of the study is due to the poorly studied poetics of this work. A review of the scientific literature on relevant topics is performed. Methodological and theoretical definitions are given. The scientific novelty of the article is in the fact that for the first time attention is paid to artistic techniques that allow to identify the author's position in the specified literary text. The author of the article grounds her opinion from the fact that, despite the dominance of the subjective point of view, other characters’ views stand out in the work. It is concluded in the study that the text of the work represents a biographical author and author-creator. It was established that the position of the author-creator is expressed through the title, epigraphs, which are quotes, as well as through different points of view, including the author-character, the author-narrator, the characters of the work. The author of the article dwells in detail on different ways of expressing the points of view of the author-character and the author-narrator. It is proved that the point of view of the author-character and the author-narrator can intersect, they are interchanged. The author's development of the term comic “point of view” is presented in the article
