    A Cloud Service Broker with Legal-Rule Compliance Checking and Quality Assurance Capabilities

    AbstractThe ICT industry, and specifically critical sectors such as healthcare, transportation, energy and government require as mandatory the compliance of the ICT systems and services with legislation and regulation, as well as with standards. In the era of cloud computing, and particularly in a public cloud scenario, this compliance management issue is exacerbated by the distributed nature of the system and by the limited control of the customer on the infrastructure/services. Also if the cloud industry is aware of this legislation/regulation compliance issue (e.g. the compliance program of Amazon, Google and Microsoft Azure), right now, there are nor reference architectures neither mechanisms capable to check and to assure, off-line and at run-time, that the compliance is guaranteed during the whole life cycle of a cloud service.Cloud service brokerage can play an important role in law/regulation compliance management of cloud services. In this paper we propose a broker-based solution for the management of law/regulation compliance. In the specific first we define a reference architecture for a legislation-aware cloud service broker, and second we propose an autonomic manager that integrate the MAPE-K control loop with the LegEx framework for the management of the legal compliance checking lifecycle

    Multimodal human machine interactions in industrial environments

    This chapter will present a review of Human Machine Interaction techniques for industrial applications. A set of recent HMI techniques will be provided with emphasis on multimodal interaction with industrial machines and robots. This list will include Natural Language Processing techniques and others that make use of various complementary interfaces: audio, visual, haptic or gestural, to achieve a more natural human-machine interaction. This chapter will also focus on providing examples and use cases in fields related to multimodal interaction in manufacturing, such as augmented reality. Accordingly, the chapter will present the use of Artificial Intelligence and Multimodal Human Machine Interaction in the context of STAR applications

    Protection of Service-Oriented Environments Serving Critical Infrastructures

    The emergence of service-oriented architectures has driven the shift towards a service-oriented paradigm, which has been adopted in several application domains. The advent of cloud computing facilities and recently of edge computing environments has increased the aforementioned paradigm shift towards service provisioning. In this context, various “traditional” critical infrastructure components have turned to services, being deployed and managed on top of cloud and edge computing infrastructures. However, the latter poses a specific challenge: the services of the critical infrastructures within and across application verticals/domains (e.g., transportation, health, industrial venues, etc.) need to be continuously available with near-zero downtime. In this context, this paper presents an approach for high-performance monitoring and failure detection of critical infrastructure services that are deployed in virtualized environments. The failure detection framework consists of distributed agents (i.e., monitoring services) to ensure timely collection of monitoring data, while it is enhanced with a voting algorithm to minimize the case of false positives. The goal of the proposed approach is to detect failures in datacenters that support critical infrastructures by targeting both the acquisition of monitoring data in a performant way and the minimization of false positives in terms of potential failure detection. The specific approach is the baseline towards decision making and triggering of actions in runtime to ensure service high availability, given that it provides the required data for decision making on time with high accuracy

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Virtualised e-Learning on the IRMOS real-time cloud

    Providing proper timeliness guarantees to distributed soft real-time applications in a virtualised infrastructure involves the careful use of various techniques at different levels, ranging from real-time scheduling mechanisms at the virtual-machine hypervisor level and QoS-aware protocols at the network level, to proper design methodologies and tools for stochastic modelling and runtime provisioning of the applications. This paper describes the way these techniques were combined to provide strong quality of service guarantees to interactive soft real-time applications in the Cloud Computing infrastructure that has been developed in the context of the IRMOS European Project.
