Design of experiments (DoE) in pharmaceutical development
At the beginning of the 20(th) century, Sir Ronald Fisher introduced the concept of applying statistical analysis during the planning stages of research rather than at the end of experimentation. When statistical thinking is applied from the design phase, it enables to build quality into the product, by adopting Deming's profound knowledge approach, comprising system thinking, variation understanding, theory of knowledge and psychology. The pharmaceutical industry was late in adopting these paradigms, compared to other sectors. It heavily focused on blockbuster drugs, while formulation development was mainly performed by One Factor At a Time (OFAT) studies, rather than implementing Quality by Design (QbD) and modern engineering-based manufacturing methodologies. Amongst various mathemarical modeling approaches, Design of Experiments (DoE) is extensively used for the implementation of QbD in both research and industrial settings. In QbD, product and process understanding is the key enabler of assuring quality in the final product. Knowledge is achieved by establishing models correlating the inputs with the outputs of the process. The mathematical relationships of the Critical Process Parameters (CPPs) and Material Attributes (CMAs) with the Critical Quality Attributes (CQAs) define the design space. Consequently, process understanding is well assured and rationally leads to a final product meeting the Quality Target Product Profile (QTPP). This review illustrates the principles of quality theory through the work of major contributors, the evolution of the QbD approach and the statistical toolset for its implementation. As such, DoE is presented in detail since it represents the first choice for rational pharmaceutical development

Common errors and difficulties of students in the department of Project Management in a spreadsheet environment
This research focuses on the difficulties facing the students of tertiary education in the use of spreadsheets, as well as the errors commonly made. The research participants were students of the Technological Institute (T.E.I.) of Larissa, who worked in applications related to Management Information Systems. The students were asked to record the difficulties that they faced in each exercise, before and after the teaching sessions. Their answers were analyzed and they were compared with the results of a questionnaire, and also a test given to them on completion of the curriculum, which aimed at identifying in objective way students' difficulties as well as the errors which they had perpetrated during this test. © Common Ground, Dimitrios Liovas, Panagiotis Politis, Vassilis Kollias
Application of experimental design for the development of soft-capsules through a prilling, inverse gelation process
The aim of this research was to develop a robust process capable of producing soft-capsules with hydrophilic core for topical administration by means of an inverse gelation. While this method is extensively studied to prepare particles with oily content, its knowledge space in the case of the proposed application is limited. Therefore, a half-fractional factorial design with 5 factors at two levels with resolution V was employed, to meet the scientific requirements in accordance with the Quality by Design approach. Kojic acid, an unstable skin whitening agent, was selected as the active ingredient for its easy detectability. Soft-capsules where produced through a vibrating nozzle device, dripping a thickened calcium chloride solution into an alginate bath. The experimental design applied revealed the effect of several Critical Process Parameters such as the solution's composition, frequency and flow-rate onto Critical Quality Attributes of the produced soft-capsules as for example drug content, encapsulation efficiency, size, shape and mechanical strength. The overall knowledge gained through the DoE exercise showed that the inverse gelation process was capable of producing soft-capsules with the desired attributes, resistant enough to allow handling during storage, but also easily ruptured when applied onto the skin, without leaving residues
Child and adolescent characters in the prose of Kosmas Politis
This thesis focuses on the study of literary child and adolescent characters in the works of Kosmas Politis, one of the foremost Greek novelists of the Generation of the ’30΄s. The aim of this research is to thoroughly explore the psycho-emotional landscape of all child and adolescent characters in Politis΄s works and to highlight the extent to which the author himself identifies with the creations of his literary imagination. Beyond the analysis and portrayal of these young characters, the thesis also seeks to interpret their interaction with the rest of the “personnel” in Politis΄s literary works, while emphasizing the ironic structures that emerge, primarily through the alternation of narrative voices and perspectives. The principal chapters of the thesis are dedicated to child and adolescent figures who play a central role in the narrative. Each chapter begins with comments on the plot, title, structure, thematic motifs, narrative techniques and critical reception of the text in question. This is followed by an in-depth examination of the child and adolescent characters, culminating in the relevant conclusions. The methods Politis employs to delinate his characters are carefully identified, and theoretical tools from the fields of narratology and gender studies are also employed where necessary. In Politis΄s work, the young protagonists not only play, but also suffer in the adult world. These children, with their fragile psyches, find themselves suspended between family issues –primarily of an economic nature- and the demands of the social environment. Unable to reconcile the incompatibility between their inner world and the external reality, the child and adolescent characters in Politis΄s works often meet a tragic fate, typically through suicide.Η παρούσα διατριβή επικεντρώνεται στη μελέτη των λογοτεχνικών παιδικών και εφηβικών χαρακτήρων στο έργο του Κοσμά Πολίτη, ενός από τους σπουδαιότερους Έλληνες πεζογράφους της γενιάς του Τριάντα.
NoVaS Transformations: Flexible Inference for Volatility Forecasting
In this paper we contribute several new results on the NoVaS transformation approach for volatility forecasting introduced by Politis (2003a,b, 2007). In particular: (a) we introduce an alternative target distribution (uniform); (b) we present a new method for volatility forecasting using NoVaS ; (c) we show that the NoVaS methodology is applicable in situations where (global) stationarity fails such as the cases of local stationarity and/or structural breaks; (d) we show how to apply the NoVaS ideas in the case of returns with asymmetric distribution; and finally (e) we discuss the application of NoVaS to the problem of estimating value at risk (VaR). The NoVaS methodology allows for a flexible approach to inference and has immediate applications in the context of short time series and series that exhibit local behavior (e.g. breaks, regime switching etc.) We conduct an extensive simulation study on the predictive ability of the NoVaS approach and find that NoVaS forecasts lead to a much ÔtighterÕ distribution of the forecasting performance measure for all data generating processes. This is especially relevant in the context of volatility predictions for risk management. We further illustrate the use of NoVaS for a number of real datasets and compare the forecasting performance of NoVaS -based volatility forecasts with realized and range-based volatility measures.ARCH, GARCH, local stationarity, structural breaks, VaR, volatility.

NoVaS Transformations: Flexible Inference for Volatility Forecasting
In this paper we present several new ¯ndings on the NoVaS transformation approach for volatility forecasting introduced by Politis (2003a,b, 2007). In particular: (a) we present a new method for accurate volatility forecasting using NoVaS ; (b) we introduce a \time- varying" version of NoVaS and show that the NoVaS methodology is applicable in situations where (global) stationarity for returns fails such as the cases of local stationarity and/or structural breaks and/or model uncertainty; (c) we conduct an extensive simulation study on the forecasting ability of the NoVaS approach under a variety of realistic data generating processes (DGP); and (d) we illustrate the forecasting ability of NoVaS on a number of real datasets and compare it to realized and range-based volatility measures. Our empirical results show that the NoVaS -based forecasts lead to a much `tighter' distribution of the forecasting performance measure. Perhaps our most remarkable ¯nding is the robustness of the NoVaS forecasts in the context of structural breaks and/or other non-stationarities of the underlying data. Also striking is that forecasts based on NoVaS invariably outperform those based on the benchmark GARCH(1,1) even when the true DGP is GARCH(1,1) when the sample size is moderately large, e.g. 350 daily observations
From modernism to the nouveau roman: Debating and theorizing the Greek novel
This paper focuses on the impact of modernism on Greek theoretical approaches to the novel from the 1940s to the 1970s and discusses the reception of William Faulkner and other modernist writers by Greek authors and critics. The study also examines the ways the French ‘nouveau roman’ was introduced into Greece and how it was adapted to its new context. By tracing the transition from modernism to nouveau roman, this study charts the debates and reflections on the novel in Greece over almost half a century by situating them in a comparative literary and cultural context
Between Modernism and Postmodernism: Greek Literature for Children and Youth in the Last Decades of the Twentieth Century
Placing Greek literature for children and youth between modernism and post-modernism during the last decades of the twentieth century, this article aims to minimize uncertainty about the status of Greek children's literature as an art form and to highlight its ability to both incorporate narrative changes and address the needs of contemporary readers. Following on the heels of European classic authors such as Michel Tournier and Gianni Rodari, contemporary Greek writers-such as Eugene Trivizas, Manos Kontoleon, and Christos Boulotis-provide alternative representations of everyday life, interweaving fantasy and social awareness. Like several other European texts, Greek metafictional literature for children and youth is indicative of a subversive tendency that relies on specific postmodernist techniques, offering readers multiple perspectives and diverse realities
