Rural development policy on areas with natural constraints - effects on family farms and rural areas in the Republic of Serbia

    No full text
The main aim of the research was to determine the effects of different rural development policy measures on economic results, production structure and resource utilization of family farms in areas with natural constraints in Serbia. Data collection was organized using a stratified simple random sampling. The sample included 371 farms in the mountain settlements of Eastern Serbia. Identification of typical farms that reflect natural and organizational-economic conditions of production in areas with natural constraints was based on multivariate analysis. The linear programming was used to simulate the effects of agricultural policy measures and examine the impact of rural development scenarios on economic results and production structure. Results of factor and cluster analysis identified three predominant farm types in areas with natural constraints: farms with intensive mixed livestock production dependent on income from agriculture; farms with mixed livestock production and income from salaries and pensions; and farms with mixed livestock and crop production and diversified income. The effects of the simulated rural development scenarios showed that solutions based on European practice could increase incomes, preserve traditional agricultural systems and biodiversity. As a guiding principle of EU policy, decoupled payments positively affected only the third group of farms. As expected, compensatory payments led to the positive economic effects for all farms types, whereas social and ecological aspects were not affected. Effects of agri-environmental payments and greening measures differed according to the farm type. To better understand their impact, further research related to the specifics of certain micro locations is needed

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

PARTIAL EQUILIBRIUM MODEL AS A TOOL FOR POLICY ANALYSIS IN AGRICULTURE: AN EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE OF MACEDONIA

    Get PDF
Agricultural sector modeling based on partial equilibrium modelling of the supply and demand has become standard approach in the market outlooks and policy impact studies. The model builders and users reveal many pros and cons of the process and results of modelling. The Macedonian experience confirms some typical obstacles and at the same time faces some new ones with a local perspective. The paper provides a summary of the milestones in modelling the partial equilibrium model for the livestock-feed sector in Macedonia with main focus on the obstacles and limitations in the process. This experience is expected to be useful for the countries in the Western Balkan region planning to build a sector models based on partial equilibrium concept as a policy analysis tool

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Assessing the Future Development of the Macedonian Agriculture: Partial equilibrium model of livestock-feed sector

    No full text
The country is facing one of the biggest challenges since its independence – the process of the EU accession. Taking into consideration that „forecasting important economic events is source of power“ (Howitt, 2005), the aim of this paper is to develop a model in order to assess the impact of the EU membership on the Macedonian agriculture. The model is recursive, dynamic, multi-product partial equilibrium model for the meat, dairy and cereals sector in the Republic of Macedonia. It follows the AGMEMOD principles, hence comprising the local features of the Macedonian agriculture. The baseline scenario shows a positive growth of the pig meat, lamb meat and cow milk sectors. On the other hand, in the EU scenarios the most positive effect is expected in the extensive sectors, e.g the sheep and beef productions. The grains show modest growth on the supply side, but the projections on the net-trade demonstrate further deficit increase. The biggest gain in the EU scenarios comes from the higher level of prices, but also from the higher budgetary support. Compared with the experiences of the previous enlargements, the model confirms the expectations about the development of the selected sectors after the EU accession.partial equilibrium model, agricultural policy, Macedonian agriculture, Livestock Production/Industries,
