Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

CONTROL OVER THE SECURITY SERVICES AS AN INDICATOR OF THE POLITICAL SYSTEM

Liberal democracy as a current and dominant political model in the world representsa kind of equilibrium of a multitude of social relations and connections between the peoplewho make up the society. Democracy as a form of political arrangement has freedom andequality in its essence. In order to enable or realize these two main postulates, society createsa system based on norms and institutions, which in turn model the citizenship of man today.Part of the institutions of the system are the security institutions, whose main mission is theguarantor of one of the basic human motives, security. The security services, like no otherinstitution, in the realization of their mission use means and methods whose possible abusedevastates the entire political system and society in general. This is the foundation of theneed for adequate control that will ensure their legal operation. Legality in the operation ofthe security services is imperative because their work methodology encroaches on the mostbasic human rights, they have information whose misuse is a flagrant violation of humanfreedom and rights. A fact that is established in the history of mankind. The world, the region and our country are witnessing the abuse of these institutions, whichcreated great consequences for the future. Macedonia has witnessed several abuses of theseinstitutions since independence until now. The last abuse that was discovered in 2015, withthe illegal wiretapping, is the largest so far in terms of its scope and substance. From it,materials were illegally created for a large part of the political and media public, the businesscommunity, the judiciary, the prosecutor’s office as well as other segments of society. Eventoday, the dilemma about the integrity of the persons and the institutions managed bythem, for which there is material from the illegal wiretapping, is still relevant. It is legitimateto question whether we can call ourselves a free society if a large part of the elite dailyperforms important duties aware that someone owns a part of their privacy. Therefore, it isquite natural that the quality of the control of the security services rises to the rank of anindicator of the degree of democracy in a society. Macedonia has entered the fourth decadeof liberal democratic life, from a legal and normative point of view it is creating a model ofparliamentary and civil control of services, but the practice is disappointing, confronting uswith the fact that the form has no substance, that the declarative differs from the real

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

THE ATTITUDE OF THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATIC POLITICAL PARTY VMRO DPMNE TOWARDS ITS MEMBERS OF THE MUSLIM FAITH

Macedonia is living the fourth decade of its independence, building a new political system, different from the previous one. The new political system rests on democratic values, in an ageof neoliberal pluralism. The new political system builds а mosaic of multi-ethnicity and multi-confessionalism.Political parties are the key factor within the political system, in which citizens organizeand articulate their political participation. It is easier for the Macedonian left, represented bythe political party SDSM, to accommodate the new situation as former communists and atheistsand to nurture contemporary multiconfessionalism. The challenge is for the right, representedby the VMRO DPMNE political party, which from its establishment to the last Congress of 2021,its first ideological determinant was Christian democracy. Given that Macedonia is a multiethnicand multiconfessional environment, the parties are striving for their representativeness. Electionanalysis shows that the right is present in environments with Muslim faith. Further in the compositionof the parliamentary caucus or mayors, the establishment of citizens with Muslim faith inthe VMRO DPMNE party may be observed. It can be assumed that the Christian Democrats haveMuslim members. A real sociological challenge is to investigate the attitude of this party towardsits members of the Muslim faith, how it approaches and mobilizes them. As well as analyzingMuslim members’ attachment to the party, what their motives for membership are, how they areorganized within the party, what common beliefs or values they share. An examination of this interrelationmay provide the answer, why this party after 30 years of its existence and profiling asa Christian democratic party, at the last Congress in 2021, adopted a doctrine in which it profileditself as a people’s party

    POLITICS AND RELIGION

There is almost no other common evolution of two phenomena that builds its uniquenessand specificity on overlapping and separating at the same time, like the relationship betweenpolitics and religion. The axis around which both phenomena exist is the man, or in more recenttimes from the aspect of their political awareness - the citizen. The specificity of the coexistenceof politics and religion, among other things, is based on the complexity of individual phenomena,on their place and role in social processes. What politics and religion have in common is thattheir identity is based on the concrete complemented by the abstract. In other words, their scopeof action moves beyond the limits of the rational and empirically verified. The key to explainingthis challenge is that both phenomena have belief as spiritus movens in their essence. One of thecharacteristics of the historical evolution and mutual influence of politics and religion is the processof refining, i.e. building one’s own identity. In the beginning it was more difficult to make thedemarcation between them to establish the special specificity and identity, today modern societiesestablish the distinction to the point of absolute incompatibility. Even the personification of thetwo phenomena was in the beginning in the same persons, i.e. in one person it had the legitimacyto communicate with God at the same time and rule the people. In the past, one person usuallyclaimed the right to the secular and the sacred, today those roles are clearly differentiated in differentpersons. Taken at the national level, Macedonia throughout history has built its own specificitywhen it comes to the relationship between politics and religion. Its specificity is based on thehistorical fact that glorifies our country as the country through which Christianity was spread onEuropean soil, and is one of the routes for the spread of Islam in Europe. Today’s contemporaryreality characterizes it as a multiethnic and multiconfessional country

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
