    Pseudo links and singular links in the Solid Torus

    In this paper we introduce and study the theories of pseudo links and singular links in the Solid Torus, ST. Pseudo links are links with some missing crossing information that naturally generalize the notion of knot diagrams, and that have potential use in molecular biology, while singular links are links that contain a finite number of self-intersections. We consider pseudo links and singular links in ST and we set up the appropriate topological theory in order to construct invariants for these types of links in ST. In particular, we formulate and prove the analogue of the Alexander theorem for pseudo links and for singular links in ST. We then introduce the mixed pseudo braid monoid and the mixed singular braid monoid, with the use of which, we formulate and prove the analogue of the Markov theorem for pseudo links and for singular links in ST. \smallbreak Moreover, we introduce the pseudo Hecke algebra of type A, PHnP\mathcal{H}_n, the cyclotomic and generalized pseudo Hecke algebras of type B, PH1,nP\mathcal{H}_{1, n}, and discuss how the pseudo braid monoid (cor. the mixed pseudo braid monoid) can be represented by PHnP\mathcal{H}_{n} (cor. by PH1,nP\mathcal{H}_{1, n}). This is the first step toward the construction of HOMFLYPT-type invariants for pseudo links in S3S^3 and in ST. We also introduce the cyclotomic and generalized singular Hecke algebras of type B, SH1,nS\mathcal{H}_{1, n}, and we present two sets that we conjecture that they form linear bases for SH1,nS\mathcal{H}_{1, n}.     The Braid Approach to the HOMFLYPT Skein Module of the Lens Spaces L(p, 1)

    In this paper we present recent results toward the computation of the HOMFLYPT skein module of the lens spaces L(p, 1), S (L(p, 1)), via braids. Our starting point is the knot theory of the solid torus ST and the Lambropoulou invariant, X, for knots and links in ST, the universal analogue of the HOMFLYPT polynomial in ST. The relation between S (L(p, 1)) and S(ST) is established in Diamantis et al. (J Knot Theory Ramif, 25: 13, 2016, [5]) and it is shown that in order to compute S (L(p, 1)), it suffices to solve an infinite system of equations obtained by performing all possible braid band moves on elements in the basis of S(ST),., presented in Diamantis and Lambropoulou (J Pure Appl Algebra, 220(2): 577-605, 2016, [4]). The solution of this infinite system of equations is very technical and is the subject of a sequel work (Diamantis and Lambropoulou, The HOMFLYPT skein module of the lens spaces L(p, 1) via braids, in preparation

The high mobility group A1 (HMGA1) and high mobility group A2 (HMGA2) proteins are architectural transcription factors that have been implicated in the pathogenesis and progression of malignant tumours, including pancreatic cancer. The aim of this study was to explore the role of HMGA1 and HMGA2 in pancreatic carcinogenesis. Methods and results: HMGA1 and HMGA2 expression was examined in 210 ductal pancreatic adenocarcinomas from resection specimens, combined on a tissue microarray also including 40 examples of PanIN and 40 normal controls. The results were correlated with the clinicopathological parameters of the tumours and the outcome of the patients. The percentage of tumour cells showing HMGA1 and HMGA2 nuclear immunoreactivity correlated positively with increasing malignancy grade and lymph node metastasis. Moreover, HMGA1 and HMGA2 expression was significantly higher in invasive carcinomas than in PanINs. No, or very low, expression was found in normal pancreatic tissue. Conclusions: Our results suggest that HMGA1 and HMGA2 are implicated in pancreatic carcinogenesis and may play a role in tumour progression towards a more malignant phenotype

    Self expandable esophageal prosthesis today represent an effective palliative treatment in esophageal cancer and in cases of stenosis or fistula into the trachea or in the mediastinum, with a limited number of complications. Covered metal ones are preferable, while the plastic stents present a more difficult position and higher incidence of migration. Results in benign stenosis are less successful: their use is recommended only in selected cases. Further long-term prospective data are awaited before biodegradable stents can be recommended for the management of benign esophageal lesions

    Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)

    This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)

    Quality of life in patients with esophageal stenting for the palliation of malignant dysphagia

    Abstract: Incidence of esophageal cancer (EC) is rising more rapidly in the Western world than that of any other cancer. Despite advances in therapy, more than 50% of patients have incurable disease at the time of presentation. This precludes curative treatment and makes palliative treatment a more realistic option for most of these patients. Dysphagia is the predominant symptom in more than 70% of patients with EC and although several management options have been developed in recent years to palliate this symptom, the optimum management is not established. Self-expanding metal stents (SEMS) are a well-established palliation modality for dysphagia in such patients. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is becoming a major issue in the evaluation of any therapeutic or palliative intervention. To date, only a few published studies can be found on Medline examining HRQoL in patients with advanced EC treated with SEMS implantation. The aim of this study was to review the impact on HRQoL of SEMS implantation as palliative treatment in patients with EC. All Medline articles regarding HRQoL in patients with advanced EC, particularly those related to SEMS, were reviewed. In most studies, relief of dysphagia was the only aspect of HRQoL being measured and SEMS implantation was compared with other palliative treatments such as brachytherapy and laser therapy. SEMS insertion provides a swift palliation of dysphagia compared to brachytherapy and no evidence was found to suggest that stent implantation is different to laser treatment in terms of improving dysphagia, recurrent dysphagia and better HRQoL, although SEMS insertion has a better technical success rate and also reduces the number of repeat interventions.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.
