Alexithymia in obese patients seeking surgical Treatment: comparison between Toronto Structered Interview for Alexithtmia and 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale”

Recent studies highlight the need to investigate the presence of psychological factors in obese patients because they show an influence on the weight loss after bariatric surgery. Alexithymia could represent a psychological risk factor for the outcome of the surgical treatment, although actually the relation between alexithymia and obesity is uncertain. The literature on alexhithymia measurement claims the importance of a multimethod assessment. The first aim is to assess alexithymia in severly obese patients by using a multimethod measurement (self-report and interview). Further aim is to investigate the relationship between alexithymia and body weight. Forty-five severly obese patients (30 Female; mean age 42,6; mean body weight 122,13 Kg) underwent the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and the Toronto Structured Interview for Alexithymia (TSIA), which represents the first clinically structured interview. Significant discordance was found between the two alexithymia measures: TSIA scores highlighted a greater level of alexithymia compared with self-report scores. Furthermore only TSIA total score was significantly related to Body Weight (p= .03; r= .34). We can hypothesize that the TSIA is a more sensitive instrument in evaluating alexithymia: minimizing obese patients’ negation tendency. A multimethod measurement seems useful to have clinically relevant information on our sample

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Are romantic attachment and couple relational characteristics predictive of assisted reproductive treatment positive outcomes?

Abstract: Background: Infertility represents a major life crisis that threatens significant life goals and can negatively affect a couple’s psychosocial health. A supportive relationship and a secure romantic attachment appear to represent protective factors that may reduce the stress arising from the experience and also play an important role in the success of Assisted Reproductive Treatment (ART). The general aim of the study is to investigate the association among romantic attachment, couple characteristics and ART outcome. Methods: 76 infertile women enrolled in a clinic in Rome completed the Experience in Close Relationship- Revised (ECR-R), the Couple Relationship Inventory (CRI) and a socio-demographic questionnaire. Results: Data analyses showed a significant positive association between ECR-R Anxiety and CRI Idealization/Persecution and Mistrust, and between ECR-R Avoidance and CRI Mistrust, whereas a significant negative association between ECR-R Avoidance and CRI Attunement was found. ART positive outcome was negatively correlated to ECR-R Avoidance and positively related to CRI Dependence. A multi-variable logistic regression revealed that ECR-R Avoidance decreased the probability of pregnancy. Conclusions: ART success appears to be related to lower levels of fear of dependence and interpersonal intimacy, and to higher abilities in self-disclosure within the romantic relationship. ART success was also found to be associated with higher aspects of tenderness and care in the couple. Further investigations are needed in order to confirm this finding with the aim of developing specific therapeutic interventions for couples facing this experience in order to promote the quality of couple relationships thereby increasing the rate of successful ART outcomes

Are defense styles mediators between traumatic experiences and maladaptive daydreaming?

Maladaptive daydreaming (MD) is a new proposed mental disorder in which an excessive absorption in vivid, narrative fantasies generates impairments in various life domains. This study aimed to examine the role of traumatic life experiences and immature, neurotic, and mature defense styles in MD. Three hundred and fifty-six Italian adults, ranging in age from 18 to 60 years completed an online survey, including measures of MD, traumatic life events, and defense styles. A multiple mediation model showed that immature, neurotic, and mature defense styles fully mediated the relationship between traumatic life experiences and MD. These findings suggest that clinical interventions for people with a history of traumatic experience who developed MD should aim to help them acquire more adaptive coping strategies to deal with traumatic memories

Motivation in the workplace has been a central topic in regard to both theoretical and organisational issues. The aim of this study was to examine the association between affect regulation capabilities levels and different motivational dimensions according to the self-determination theory in military students. Following questionnaires were administered to 198 Italian military finance students (183 male): a sociodemographic questionnaire, the 20-itemToronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), and the Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale (MWMS). Data analysis showed that the high affect regulation capabilities group scored significantly higher in autonomous motivation compared to the intermediate and low affect capabilities groups and significantly lower in external motivation. Meanwhile, the low affect regulation capabilities group scored significant higher in amotivation compared to the intermediate and high affect regulation capabilities groups. The results confirmed the association between abilities in emotional regulation and motivational dimension scores. Further studies are needed to confirm these preliminary results, which could orientate the selection and training of future military student
