    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Remote predictive mapping can provide a base for geological mapping. This thesis investigates different methods for remotely mapping the igneous rocks and their host sedimentary rocks on Axel Heiberg Island, using the already available data sets. Axel Heiberg Island has been chosen as the platform for establishing the most suitable method of mapping igneous rocks and other geological features in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The igneous rocks on Axel Heiberg Island are important to understand and study because of their impact on the petroleum system and energy resources that they may contain, and because of the possibility of unravelling the debatable tectonic history of Canadian Arctic Archipelago. To identify the geological information of the study area three remote predictive mapping approaches have been studied. The first remote predictive approach uses remote sensing techniques such as color composite and band ratio to highlight the igneous rocks on Axel Heiberg Island. The satellite sensors that have been employed to analyse the geological information on the surface of the study area are: ASTER and LANDAST satellite images. Spectral correlation technique is employed for the second and third approach. For the second mapping approach gravity and magnetic field anomalies are spectrally correlated and filtered. The filtered gravity and magnetic field anomalies provided key constrains on analysis of geological features, especially igneous rocks and salt domes. The same procedure has been used to spectrally correlate magnetic field anomalies and silica weight percentage of surface rocks derived from ASTER thermal bands. The first remote predictive mapping technique proved to be an effective technique for initial assessment of the study area and highlighting the target geological features. Using color composite technique it was inferred that the igneous rocks in the study area have the highest iii reflectance in Landsat band3 and ASTER band2. The results in the second approach were constrained by low resolution of gravity data; however the thickness trend of igneous rocks and salt domes were revealed. The third approach proved to be the most effective among the other two approaches, where result map matched well with the only available accurate geological map of the study area

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    Depositional Processes and Facies Variability in Organic-rich Mudstones of the Colorado Group, West-central, Alberta, Canada

    The Early Cenomanian to Early Turonian Fish Scales, Belle Fourche and Second White Specks formations across southern and central Alberta, comprising the lower portion of the Colorado Group, were deposited across a broad shelf setting during the Mowry Transgressive-Regressive Cycle and the transgressive portion of the Greenhorn Transgressive-Regressive Cycle. They are composed of organic-rich, mixed siliciclastic and calcareous mudstones deposited under the influence of changing paleooceanographic conditions and sediment sources within the Western Interior Seaway (WIS). Based on an understanding of sediment transport mechanisms across shelf environments, sedimentological evidence of mudstones comprising the Colorado Group suggests influences by geostrophic bottom currents. Allomembers defined within a complex stratigraphic framework of the Second White Specks Formation reveals significant lateral facies changes likely affected by subtle changes in water depth. Lastly, the spatial and temporal distribution of facies is a result of sediment reworking processes across a low gradient shelf

    Pennsylvanian–Permian Aragonite to Calcite Sea Transitions in the Sverdrup Basin (Arctic Canada) and Cantabrian Basin (northern Spain)

    Detailed facies analysis of Carboniferous–Permian strata in the Sverdrup Basin (Arctic Canada) and Cantabrian Basin (northern Spain) has led to the recognition of short-lived calcite seas within a first-order aragonite sea. The first return to calcitic conditions is documented in Lower Pennsylvanian carbonate rocks and lasted approximately 4–6 Myrs based on the replacement of aragonitic algae and tangential ooids by calcitic algae and radial ooids in shallow water facies. A second return to calcite sea immediately after the Carboniferous–Permian boundary is documented within an individual cyclothem, ~400,000 years in duration, through a similar shift to calcitic biotic and abiotic elements. These findings indicate higher-order calcite-aragonite episodes may occur during first-order oscillations and are likely influenced by a variety of mechanisms such as magnesium to calcium ratio (Mg:Ca), pCO2, temperature, and carbonate saturation among others. In this study, both the Early Pennsylvanian and Early Permian returns to calcite seas are attributed to increases in atmospheric CO2 due to contemporaneous volcanic activity. As a result, excess CO2 was buffered through the shoaling of saturation horizons in the ocean resulting in the non-precipitation and/or dissolution of the more soluble mineral phases such as aragonite and high-Mg calcite. A very shallow aragonitic zone is inferred in the Sverdrup Basin compared to a slightly deeper interval in the Cantabrian Basin, which is due to the higher paleolatitude of the Sverdrup Basin. Shoaling of aragonite and HMC saturation horizons is currently occurring in modern oceans due to the increased uptake of CO2 accelerating the rate of ocean acidification. Therefore, one of the long-term consequences of continued increases in anthropogenic CO2 could be the establishment of oceanic conditions like those of a calcite sea
