Theory of adaptive finite element methods: an introduction
This is a survey on the theory of adaptive finite element methods (AFEM), which are fundamental in modern computational science and engineering. We present a self-contained and up-to-date discussion of AFEM for linear second order elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) and dimension , with emphasis on the differences and advantages of AFEM over standard FEM. The material is organized in chapters with problems that extend and complement the theory. We start with the functional framework, inf-sup theory, and Petrov-Galerkin method, which are the basis of FEM. We next address four topics of essence in the theory of AFEM that cannot be found in one single article: mesh refinement by bisection, piecewise polynomial approximation in graded meshes, a posteriori error analysis, and convergence and optimal decay rates of AFEM. The first topic is of geometric and combinatorial nature, and describes bisection as a rather simple and efficient technique to create conforming graded meshes with optimal complexity. The second topic explores the potentials of FEM to compensate singular behavior with local resolution and so reach optimal error decay. This theory, although insightful, is insufficient to deal with PDEs since it relies on knowing the exact solution. The third topic provides the missing link, namely a posteriori error estimators, which hinge exclusively on accessible data: we restrict ourselves to the simplest residual-type estimators and present a complete discussion of upper and lower bounds, along with the concept of oscillation and its critical role. The fourth topic refers to the convergence of adaptive loops and its comparison with quasi-uniform refinement. We first show, under rather modest assumptions on the problem class and AFEM, convergence in the natural norm associated to the variational formulation. We next restrict the problem class to coercive symmetric bilinear forms, and show that AFEM is a contraction for a suitable error notion involving the induced energy norm. This property is then instrumental to prove optimal cardinality of AFEM for a class of singular functions, for which the standard FEM is suboptimal
Numerical analysis of a 3-D printed porous trailing edge for broadband noise reduction
Lattice Boltzmann simulations were carried out to investigate the noise mitigation mechanisms of a 3-D printed porous trailing-edge insert, elucidating the link between noise reduction and material permeability. The porous insert is based on a unit cell resembling a lattice of diamond atoms. It replaces the last 20 % chord of a NACA 0018 at zero angle-of-attack. A partially blocked insert is considered by adding a solid partition between 84 % and 96 % of the aerofoil chord. The regular porous insert achieves a substantial noise reduction at low frequencies, although a slight noise increase is found at high frequencies. The partially blocked porous insert exhibits a lower noise reduction level, but the noise emission at mid-to-high frequency is slightly affected. The segment of the porous insert near the tip plays a dominant role in promoting noise mitigation, whereas the solid-porous junction contributes, in addition to the rough surface, towards the high-frequency excess noise. The current study demonstrates the existence of an entrance length associated with the porous material geometry, which is linked to the pressure release process that is responsible for promoting noise mitigation. This process is characterised by the aerodynamic interaction between pressure fluctuations across the porous medium, which is found at locations where the porous insert thickness is less than twice the entrance length. Present results also suggest that the noise attenuation level is related to both the chordwise extent of the porous insert and the streamwise turbulent length scale. USING THE TUTORIAL APPROACH TO IMPROVE PHYSICS LEARNING FROM INTRODUCTORY TO GRADUATE LEVEL
In this thesis, I discuss the development and evaluation of tutorials ranging from introductory to graduate level. Tutorials were developed based upon research on student difficulties in learning relevant concepts and findings of cognitive research. Tutorials are a valuable resource when used either in-class or as a self-study tool. They strive to help students develop a robust knowledge structure of relevant topics and improve their problem solving skills. I discuss the development of a tutorial on the Lock-in amplifier (LIA) for use as both an on-ramp to ease the transition of students entering into the research lab and to improve student understanding of the operation of the LIA for those already making use of this device. The effectiveness of this tutorial was evaluated using think aloud interviews with graduate students possessing a wide range of experience with the LIA and the findings were uniformly positive. I also describe the development and evaluation of a Quantum Interactive Learning Tutorial (QuILT) that focuses on quantum key distribution using two protocols for secure key distribution. One protocol used in the first part of the QuILT is administered to students working collaboratively in class while the second protocol used in the second part of the QuILT was administered as homework. Evaluation of student understanding of the two protocols used in this QuILT shows that it was effective at improving student understanding both immediately after working on the QuILT and two months later. Finally, I discuss the development and evaluation of four web-based tutorials focusing on quantitative problem solving intended to aid introductory students in the learning of effective problem-solving heuristics while helping them learn physics concepts. Findings suggest that while these tutorials are effective when administered in one-on-one think-aloud interviews, this effectiveness is greatly diminished when students are asked to use the tutorials as a self-study tool with no supervision. In addition, the development and evaluation of four sets of scaffolded prequizzes for introductory physics on the same topics as the tutorials is discussed. These prequizzes are designed to mimic the structure of the web-based tutorials and can be implemented in the classroom
A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1
Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1
Direct P-Wave Seismic Noise Interferometry for Groundwater Monitoring: A Modelling Study
In this study, we monitor the depth variation of an unconfined aquifer by applying seismic noise interferometry to synthetic data modelled with a 2D finite-difference software. We consider two models with the same subsurface geological structure, but with different water table levels representing two monitoring periods. The receivers are placed at the topographic surface and collect the seismic signals generated by a source located at the bottom of the aquifer to simulate a pumping system. First, cross-correlation of seismic traces with a reference one is used to produce interferograms (i.e., virtual surveys) for both the tested models. Then, direct P-wave arrivals identified in the two interferograms are compared through the stretching technique in order to estimate the relative velocity changes (dv/v). MeSH term explosion and author rank improve expert recommendations
Information overload is an often-cited phenomenon that reduces the productivity, efficiency and efficacy of scientists. One challenge for scientists is to find appropriate collaborators in their research. The literature describes various solutions to the problem of expertise location, but most current approaches do not appear to be very suitable for expert recommendations in biomedical research. In this study, we present the development and initial evaluation of a vector space model-based algorithm to calculate researcher similarity using four inputs: 1) MeSH terms of publications; 2) MeSH terms and author rank; 3) exploded MeSH terms; and 4) exploded MeSH terms and author rank. We developed and evaluated the algorithm using a data set of 17,525 authors and their 22,542 papers. On average, our algorithms correctly predicted 2.5 of the top 5/10 coauthors of individual scientists. Exploded MeSH and author rank outperformed all other algorithms in accuracy, followed closely by MeSH and author rank. Our results show that the accuracy of MeSH term-based matching can be enhanced with other metadata such as author rank
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.
