Heisenberg modules and Balian–Low theorems - Applications of operator algebras to Gabor analysis

    No full text
The main way to study a periodic signal is to decompose it into a sum of simple signals, namely sine waves. However, when a signal changes substantially over time, such as a piece of music, different methods are needed. One method is to use Gabor frames. A Gabor frame represents a given signal in a way that emphasizes the signal’s frequency content at each point in time. For instance, a Gabor frame will represent an audio signal analogously to how sheet music is written. Constructing good Gabor frames is not an easy task, and this problem has connections to many other areas in mathematics. In my dissertation, I have connected this problem to an area called operator algebras. A basic theorem about Gabor frames is the Balian-Low theorem, which is rooted in the uncertainty principle from quantum mechanics. I have shown that this theorem has a conceptual interpretation in operator algebras. Moreover, one can generally talk about Gabor frames in an abstract setting, namely in the context of an abelian topological group. I have completely classified the groups to which the Balian-Low theorem extends. One of the groups to which it extends is the rational adele group from number theory

Gift from the gods: a Balinese guide to early child rearing

book chapterThe influence of Western schools and other imports notwithstanding, many child-rearing practices recorded earlier in the century [in Indonesia] are still observable, especially those concerning infants and young children. For the "manual" that follows, I propose as the fictive author a male healer, or balian, who is trained in traditional Balinese healing arts to cure diseases of both physical and spiritual origins

Disrupting Racism through Re-envisioned Teacher Training

[ABSTRACT ONLY; NO FULL TEXT] Peter Elbow foresees seismic shifts on the horizon in the culture of literacy that promise to empower teachers and students to embrace a variety of vernacular spoken languages in the quest for good writing. Although Elbow's prediction that "a single language for what's valid for serious writing" (363) is soon to be an archaic notion, other scholars like Walt Wolfram and Tore Janson argue that educational and social forces render language standardization an inevitable reality. The design of this project is first to historicize the racial and linguistic trauma that thrives in America's education system. The author then references and applies John U. Ogbu's cultural-ecological theory to depict the lasting effects of trauma on historically marginalized students. Next, the author suggests trauma-informed pedagogical approaches currently absent from pre-service teacher training programs that will prime new teachers to stamp out linguistic profiling and racial injustice within English Language Arts classrooms. Ultimately, this project demonstrates the need for a nationally uniform re-envisioned pre-service teacher training program that supports teachers and students impacted by racially-driven traumatic stress. This work of scholarship demonstrates that eradicating a single standard of literacy is welcome news at a time when a resurgence of white nationalism threatens to increase racism inside American schools

I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Glaucoma is defined as a progressive optic neuropathy, characterized by loss of visual function and often associated with high intra-ocular pressure. Testing the patients ’ visual function with Standard Automated Perimetry (SAP) is currently the clinical standard for detecting glaucomatous visual field loss. A new test algorithm using the Frequency Doubling illusion has been introduced on the Matrix perimeter (Humphrey Matrix; Carl Zeiss Meditech, Dublin CA) that measures the central 10 ˚ using a 2˚x 2 ˚ square flickering stimulus. This stimulus has the theoretical advantage of being both a large target, with good repeatability, and being perceptually selective, by preferentially stimulating the magnocellular projecting ganglion cells. The purpose of this thesis was to determine the within-technique, between-visits repeatability and the within-visit, between-technique comparison of several techniques available to measure th

Smooth lattice orbits of nilpotent groups and strict comparison of projections

    No full text
This paper provides sufficient density conditions for the existence of smooth vectors generating a frame or Riesz sequence in the lattice orbit of a square-integrable projective representation of a nilpotent Lie group. The conditions involve the product of lattice co-volume and formal dimension, and complement Balian-Low type theorems for the non-existence of smooth frames and Riesz sequences at the critical density. The proof hinges on a connection between smooth lattice orbits and generators for an explicitly constructed finitely generated Hilbert CC^*-module. An important ingredient in the approach is that twisted group CC^*-algebras associated to finitely generated nilpotent groups have finite decomposition rank, hence finite nuclear dimension, which allows us to deduce that any matrix algebra over such a simple CC^*-algebra has strict comparison of projections.Comment: 36 page

In operating the factory, several types of equipment are used which consists of main equipment and supporting equipment. The main equipment is dominant equipment for the production process and if there is no such equipment then the production process cannot be implemented. In this thesis the author will discuss The economic life of the 2 main types of equipment, namely, a pan mixer machine as a tool for making concrete mix and a spmnmg machine as a tool for rotating molds. for the production of piles and electricity poles. In operation, the two machines require shared costs into operational costs and depreciation costs. These two cost factors will affects whether the equipment is economical to operate or not No. The age at which the equipment is still economical to use is called with economic life. In this final project the economic life is calculated based on smallest total annual costs. From the results of these calculations it is known that the Pan Mixer Machine has economic life of 5 (five) years with the smallest total annual cost of Rp. 74,994,525.56 and Spinning Machines have an economic life of 5 (five) years with the lowest total annual costs of Rp. 56,305,158.89. In this study, the Crusader source, which was translated into Turkish and evaluated in detail, is about the historical process of the conquest of Jerusalem by Saladin, the most important Muslim figure in the Crusades,. The Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem, weakened by internal conflicts, was defeated in the Battle of Hattin on July 4, 1187. Many noble captives were taken, including King Guy de Lusignan. Until mid-September, Saladin had captured Akka, Nablus, Jaffa, Sidon, Beirut and Askalan and turned his direction to Jerusalem. Saladin came to Jerusalem with a large army on September 20, 1187 and established a encampment and thus the siege began. Selahaddin, who had the military superiority, revived the Muslim cause in the Holy Land when Balian d'Ibelin surrendered the city. Libellus de Expugnatione Terrae Sanctae per Saladinum is an important source text that directly and in detail describes the Jerusalem expedition of Saladin. Although various opinions were made about the identity of the author, who was the witness to the events, it was not clear who he was
