Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Role of tubulin polyglutamylation in Drosophila's nervous system
Les microtubules (MTs), qui sont composés de dimères d'α- et de β-tubulines, constituent un des composants du cytosquelette des cellules eucaryotes. De nombreuses protéines interagissent avec les MTs. Ces interactions, qui permettent aux MTs de remplir leurs fonctions, sont contrôlées spatialement et temporellement. Les MTs sont des structures hétérogènes. Cette hétérogénéité est générée d'une part par l'existence de différents isotypes d'α- et de β-tubulines qui peuvent composer un MT et, d'autre part, par des modifications post-traductionnelles (MPTs) portées par chaque isotype d'α- et de β-tubuline. Les nombreuses combinaisons que ces deux éléments génèrent pourraient réguler finement les interactions entre les MTs et leurs protéines associées et ainsi permettre aux MTs de remplir leurs fonctions.La polyglutamylation est une MPT réversible qui consiste à ajouter des chaînes de glutamates au niveau de l'extrémité C-terminale de l'α- et de la β-tubuline. Chez les mammifères, certaines Tubulin Tyrosin Ligase-Like (TTLL) contrôlent l'initiation de la chaîne en ajoutant le premier glutamate alors que d'autres sont responsables de l'élongation de la chaîne. La glutamylation est particulièrement enrichie dans le système nerveux des vertébrés. Cependant, son rôle est mal compris. Mon travail de thèse a permis de confirmer que seule l'α-tubuline est glutamylée dans le système nerveux de drosophile et d'identifier une glutamylase majeure présente dans le système nerveux de drosophile, la protéine dTTLL5. Chez les drosophiles mutantes pour dTTLL5, la glutamylation disparaît dans le système nerveux. Au contraire, lorsque dTTLL5 est surexprimé dans tous les neurones, la glutamylation augmente dans le système nerveux. En absence et en excès de glutamylation, les drosophiles sont viables et ne présentent pas de défaut majeur. J'ai également analysé la morphologie et le fonctionnement de la jonction neuromusculaire (JNM) chez la larve en absence et en excès de glutamylation des MTs. Les JNMs semblent normales et fonctionnelles en absence de glutamylation. De même, peu de défauts sont constatés lorsque les MTs sont davantage glutamylés. En conclusion, mon travail montre que la glutamylation des MTs n'apparaît pas essentielle pour le fonctionnement des motoneurones. Cette MPT est donc probablement impliquée dans des fonctions neuronales plus subtiles qui restent à explorer chez la drosophile.Microtubules (MTs) are made of α- and β-tubulins dimers and are one of the cytoskeleton components in eukaryotic cells. Many proteins interact with MTs. MTs are able to fulfill their functions because of these interactions, which are spatially and temporally controlled. MTs are heterogeneous structures. This heterogeneity has two sources. Firstly, there exists several isotypes of α- and β-tubulins that can form a MT. Secondly, post-translational modifications (PTMs) are carried by α- and β-tubulins. Using both of these many combinations is possible and this heterogeneity could allow a fine-tuned regulation of MTs interactions with associated proteins in order to make MTs fufil their functions properly. MT polyglutamylation is a reversible PTM which consists of the addition of glutamyl side chains at the C-terminal tail of α- and β-tubulins. In mammals, the enzymes in charge of this PTM are called Tubulin Tyrosin Ligase-Like (TTLL). Some are responsible for the initiation of the side chain and are able to add the first residue, while others are in charge of the elongation of the side chain. MT polyglutamylation is enriched in the nervous system (NS) of vertebrates, however its exact role is not well understood. My work led to confirm that MT glutamylation is only carried by the α-tubulin in the drosophila NS and to identify a major glutamylase present in drosophila NS called dTTLL5. In dTTLL5 mutants, glutamylation marks disappear in the NS while the dTTLL5 over-expression in neurons causes an increase of MT glutamylation in the NS. In cases of lack and excessive glutamylation, drosophila are viable and they do not show any obvious defect. I analyzed the morphology and function of larval neuromuscular junction (NMJ) in cases of lack and excess of MT glutamylation. NMJs seem to be normal and functional without glutamylation. Likewise not much defect are observed in excess of glutamylation in drosophila NS. To conclude, my work shows that MT glutamylation appears not to be essential for the function of motoneurons. This PTM is likely involved in more subtle neuronal functions, which remain to investigate in drosophila
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
