Evaluate El Gouna as a green town: comparative analysis between GPRS, LEED, BREEAM and DGNB

    No full text
This doctoral dissertation aims to assess El Gouna, Egypt, as a green and eco-sustainable community by evaluating its compliance with international and national green neighborhood certification systems. The research is structured into six distinct sections, uniquely avoiding conventional chaptalization such as background, literature review, methodology, study area description, and conclusion. Instead, each section is designed to contain its own introduction, objective, methodology, and conclusion. This novel approach ensures that readers gain a deeper understanding of section specific intro, objective, methodology and conclusion rather than grab it from an overall perspective (since the sections are quite long). In this structurization, the main challenge lies in effectively harmonizing all sections under one comprehensive framework. Section 1: Exploring Green Neighborhood Concept and Certification System The dissertation commences with a section titled "Exploring Green Neighborhood Concept and Certification System." This serves as an introduction to the concept of green neighborhoods and the associated certification process. Through an extensive review of relevant literature, this section examines the core essence of a "green neighborhood" and how certification systems address this concept. Moreover, it delves into various features of these certifications, including themes, indicators, intent, certification period, cost, and certification validity. Section 2: Evaluating Green Future in African Cities The second section of this dissertation, titled "Evaluating Green Future in African Cities," explores the indexing and certification systems existing in the African continent, with a particular focus on Green Star South Africa, Green Mark Canada, Green Pyramid Rating System Egypt, and Siemens Green City index. The section then proceeds to compare these African rating systems with internationally renowned certifications such as LEED Neighborhood Development, BREEAM Communities, and DGNB Districts. The aim is to gain insight into how these certification systems prioritize different sustainability aspects, including Economy, Ecology or Environment, Governance, Water, Energy, Transport and Accessibility, Materials and Resources, and Livability. This section serves as a comprehensive literature review, offering a strong foundation for further indexing and scoring of El Gouna. By understanding the setting of indicators and their values across various sectors, this review enables a thorough assessment of El Gouna's eco-sustainability in relation to other African cities and global benchmarks. The information garnered here will aid in identifying strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement within neighborhood certification system indexing and certification. Section 3: Evaluating Green Pyramid Rating System (GPRS) Building upon the foundation laid in section 2, the third section, titled "Evaluating Green Pyramid Rating System (GPRS)," delves deeper into the examination of GPRS as a specific case study. Section 2 raised various critical questions about the themes, indicators, their values, weightage, and local priorities within the green certification system. This section addresses these questions by employing a problem and objective tree analysis focused on GPRS. By conducting a thorough analysis of GPRS, this section aims to shed light on its strengths and weaknesses in promoting eco-sustainability. Moreover, it identifies opportunities for improvement and recommends ways to enhance new national certification systems. The recommendations put forth in this chapter are geared towards ensuring that these systems become more comprehensive, contextually specific, and practically applicable. In the pursuit of a more robust eco-sustainability evaluation, this chapter also integrates GPRS with international indicators, such as ISO, CEN, OECD, and other international and national benchmarks. By doing so, it contextualizes GPRS within a broader framework, facilitating a holistic understanding of its implications and potential adaptations. It is important to acknowledge that the author's master's thesis has played a pivotal role in shaping the content of this section. Section 4: Exploring Green Initiatives in El Gouna In this fourth section, titled "Exploring Green Initiatives in El Gouna," the focus shifts to a comprehensive analysis of the green initiatives undertaken by El Gouna over the past two decades. The initiatives span various sectors, including Eco and Vernacular Architecture, Green Transport, Energy Efficiency, Waste Management, Water Conservation, Local Production, and Biodiversity Conservation, among others. El Gouna's remarkable status as a flagship project within the Orascom Development portfolio is carefully examined. The section highlights the earning trends of this pioneering project in comparison to other developments, illustrating the significance of its green initiatives in the larger context of sustainable urban development. To assess El Gouna's efforts in reducing carbon emissions, the section presents two detailed calculations. Moreover, it outlines the steps that have been planned and partially implemented to achieve carbon equilibrium, showcasing El Gouna's commitment to combat climate change. Additionally, this chapter evaluates the vegetation growth of El Gouna over the past two decades, employing the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) as a measure. By comparing NDVI values with those of Hurghada, Marsa Alam, and Sharm El-Sheikh, the section provides insights into El Gouna's progress in enhancing green spaces and biodiversity conservation. Section 5: Evaluating El Gouna in terms of GPRS, LEED ND, BREEAM and DGNB Section five serves as the nucleus of this dissertation, critically evaluating El Gouna's eco-sustainability through the lens of four prominent green community certification systems: Green Pyramid Rating System (GPRS), LEED Neighborhood Development, BREEAM Communities, and DGNB Districts. This evaluation is primarily influenced by the green initiatives explored in section four, providing a comprehensive understanding of El Gouna's progress in promoting sustainability. The section compares the scores and certification levels attained from each of the certification systems. By aligning these evaluations with the specific green initiatives outlined in the preceding section, a nuanced analysis emerges, pinpointing strengths and areas for improvement within El Gouna's eco-sustainable practices. Moreover, the section goes beyond the present evaluation, providing valuable insights into what El Gouna must focus on and improve to attain the next level of certification in the future. Each section of this dissertation functions as a standalone scientific paper, presenting valuable findings that would greatly aid the author in future publication endeavors. Notably, sections two and three of this research have already been published in prestigious platforms such as the 'Fordham University Journal (in Press),' 'Quality of Life Conference proceedings,' and the 'SBE Cairo conference.' These publications serve as a testament to the significance and credibility of the research, further solidifying its potential impact on the academic community. Abschnitt 1. The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Author Under Sail The Imagination of Jack London, 1893-1902

    No full text
In Author Under Sail, Jay Williams offers the first complete literary biography of Jack London as a professional writer engaged in the labor of writing. It examines the authorial imagination in London's work, the use of imagination in both his fiction and nonfiction, and the ways he defined imagination in the creative process in his business dealings with his publishers, editors, and agents. In this first volume of a two-volume biography, Williams traverses the years 1893 to 1902, from London's "Story of a Typhoon" to The People of the Abyss. The Jack London who emerges in the pages of Author Under Sail is a writer whose partnership with publishers, most notably his productive alliance with George Brett of Macmillan, was one of the most formative in American literary history. London pioneered many author models during the heyday of realism and naturalism, blurring the boundaries of these popular genres by focusing on absorption and theatricality and the representation of the seen and unseen. London created an impassioned, sincere, and extremely personal realism unlike that of other American writers of the time. Author Under Sail is a literary tour de force that reveals the full range of London as writer, creative citizen, and entrepreneur at the same time it sheds light on the maverick side of machine-age literature.Intro -- Title Page -- Copyright Page -- Dedication -- Contents -- Acknowledgments -- Introduction -- 1.
