System-on-package solutions for multi-band RF front end
Advances in microelectronics technology have enabled us to integrate a complex electronic system (such as a radio) on a single chip or in a single package module, known as system-on-chip (SoC) and system-on-package (SoP) paradigms. This brings not only new opportunities for system integration, but also challenges in design and implementation. One of these challenges is how to achieve an optimum total solution of system integration via chip and package co-design, because there is no tool or design methodology available for such kind of optimization. This thesis focuses on innovative multi-band multi-standard radio front-end design and explores a new design methodology. The motivation of developing this design methodology is to achieve an optimum total solution for radio system implementation via chip and package co-design and co-optimization. The methodology starts from RF packaging and components modeling. Necessary models for both on-chip and off-chip passives are developed. Parasitic effects of packages for radio chips are modeled for particular frequencies. Compared with high-speed digital packaging, RF packaging normally deals with narrow band signals. It is possible to absorb some unwanted parasitics by designing proper port matching networks. In addition, cost-performance trade-offs are performed. In this context, we first developed process and technology based cost models, which include parameters like chip real estate, raw materials, package, test and rework. Impact of process variation on final yield has also been considered in the models by using a statistical analysis approach. Performance of different design options is measured by a special FoM (figure-of-merit). Each type of analog/RF circuit (such as LNA, PA and ADC) has its own dedicated FoM. Through a series of cost-performance trade-offs for different on-chip versus off-chip passives and partitions, an optimum total solution is obtained. Finally, this methodology was demonstrated via a number of design examples for multi-band multi-standard radio front-end. The author has explored the optimum solutions for different circuit architectures and process technologies encompassing parallel, concurrent and digitally programmable multi-band radio frond-end blocks. It is interesting to find that, for complex RF circuits like a multi-band multi-standard radio, moving some passives off-chip will have significant cost-savings. In addition to the above contributions, the author has also developed an MCM-D technology on LCP and glass substrates, based on metal deposition and BCB spin-coating at KTH clean room. The author has also performed some preliminary studies on UWB radio for RFID applications.QC 2010100

π-Conjugated Polymers with Pendant Coumarins: Design, Synthesis, Characterization, and Interactions with Carbon Nanotubes
A series of new fluorene-based ď °-conjugated polymers having coumarin derivatives as part of dendritic side chains were designed and prepared using Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. A new coumarin derivative, bearing a heptyl side-chain for solubility was utilized to ensure solubility of the final polymers. It was found that fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from the coumrains to the polyfluorene backbone was efficient, especially for the polymers decorated with lower-generation dendrons. Each of the polymers was found to interact strongly with the surface of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in THF, and their ability to selectively disperse specific SWNT chiralities was investigated. Photoluminescence studies revealed that the strong polymer emission is efficiently quenched in the corresponding supramolecular complexes with SWNTs. This high quenching efficiency indicates that the coumarin-polymer FRET system can be supramolecularly bound to the surface of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) to produce an energy transfer system in which the energy absorbed by the donor coumarin chromophores is channeled to the SWNTs.The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page. Implementation of PKI-based Single Sign On for Web Services
Today, the technical development goes towards distributed computer systems where a group of computers communicate with each other. This applies for search engines, calculation intensive environments and also for the Swedish defence management systems. In order for the systems to communicate as flexible as possible one often wants the communication to take place according to standardized protocols which are independently of computer platform, programming language and transport protocol. A concept that can be used for this type of communication is Web Services which is a concept where information is sent as XML formatted messages over optional communication protocol. In order to make it possible to exchange sensitive data that must be out of reach of unauthorized use, the communication must be supported of several important security functions. One of these functions is user authentication which incorporates that the member's identity is verified. In order to make user authentication possible, digital certificates and asymmetric crypto operations may be used. These types of operations are performance requiring why Single Sign On is sought. SSO means that the member only authenticates itself once during a certain time interval in order to facilitate for both systems and members. When the user authentication is completed a symmetric key can be exchanged for continued communication. The continued communication can be protected on various levels such as transport level and message level. The author of this master thesis has examined and implemented a solution for user authentication and message protection for Web Services. Moreover, different existing tools are investigated that are available for Web service's today and some that are expected to come shortly

Refugee survivors of torture: Trauma and treatment
It is increasingly likely that psychologists may be faced with clients who have been tortured, although the significance of this background can be easily unrecognized or mishandled. With the growing incidence of refugees to the United States escaping from organized violence and human rights violations in many parts of the world, the need for psychological assistance in the recovery from torture is well documented. By integrating principles from trauma theory and multicultural theory with a conceptual analysis of power and liberation theory, the author offers an understanding of both the nature of the damage inflicted by politically based torture and strategies to help overcome that damage. In order for the oppressed to wage the struggle for their liberation, they must perceive the reality of oppression not as a closed world from which there is no exit, but as l imit ing situation which they can transform. (Freire, 1973, p. 34) Politically driven torture may not seem a likely factor in the course of much conventional clinical work, but the unfortunate fact is that the consequences of barbarity inflicted elsewhere are in-creasingly to be encountered within resettlement populations her
Functions of the cerebral cortex and cholinergic systems in synaptic plasticity induced by sensory preconditioning
Thèse numérisée par la Direction des bibliothèques de l'Université de Montréal.This thesis provides evidence to support the hypothesis that synaptic plasticity in the primary somatosensory cortex is a cellular correlate of associative learning, that the process depends upon acetylcholine and that only certain cortical neurons display this plasticity. In a first series of experiments, single-imit recordings were carried out in the barrel cortex of awake, adult rats subjected to whisker pairing, an associative learning paradigm where deflections of the recorded neuron's principle vibrissa were repeatedly paired with those of a non-adjacent one. On average, this form of sensory preconditioning increased the responses of a recorded unit to the stimulation of the non-adjacent vibrissa. In contrast, following explicitly unpaired control experiments, neuronal responsiveness decreased. The effect of pairing was further enhanced by local, microiontophoretic delivery of NMDA and the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor L-NAME and reduced by the NMDA receptor competitive antagonist AP5. These results and the fact that the influence of the pharmacological agents on neuronal excitability were either transient (liinited to the delivery period) or simply absent indicated that the somatosensory cerebral cortex is one site where plasticity emerges following whisker pairing. In subsequent experiments, using a similar conditioning paradigm that relied on evoked potential rather than single-unit recordings, increases in the responses of cortical neurons to the non-adjacent whisker were blocked by atropine sulfate, an antagonist of muscarinic cholinoreceptors. Administration of norn-ial saline or atropine methyl nitrate, a muscarinic antagonist that did not cross the blood-brain barrier, instead of atropine sulfate, did not affect plasticity. Analysis of the behavioral state of the animal showed that the changes observed in the evoked potential could not be attributed to fluctuations m the behavioral state of the animal. By combining the results described in this thesis with data foimd in related literature, the author hypothesizes that whisker pairing induces an acetylcholine-dependent form of plasticity within the somatosensory cortex through Hebbian mechanisms
The Commentary on John of Origen (c. 185-c. 254) is an important exegetical work, maybe the chef-d œuvre of this prolific Greek-speaking author who regarded the Bible as the foundation of his works, both in his exegetical commentaries and in his critical edition of the text. This work is also the first commentary on the Gospel of John that has survived to this day. Yet, there are only partial studies about it whether thematic or theological. The present work deals with this commentary as a whole from a literary point of view. Reading the text closely and with a particular approach, it defines the stylistic and literary devices with which the author builds up his interpretation. In this perspective, it analyses how the exeget puts into practice the ancient hermeneutical principle that consists in explaining Scripture by Scripture .Thus after presenting the commentary itself and his features, it describes the different elements of the writing process, and then offers some comments about the structure of the exegesis. It highlights the fact that the commentary paradoxically gives way to the biblical text itself. Indeed, the author constantly tries to imit the form and the language of the text he comments, and his own task seems to consist less in building a new work than in picking and making the connection between different biblical elements, like a herbalist of Scripture . Surprisingly then, the author uses a similar method in commenting the Bible and in editing its text.PARIS4-Bib. électronique (751059905) / SudocSudocFranceF
