Fluorophore interactions with the surface modes and internal modes of a photonic crystal
The metal-ligand complex tris(2,2′-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) chloride (Ru probe) displays a broad emission
spectrum ranging from 540 to 730 nm. The emission spectra of Ru probe were measured when placed on top of a
one-dimensional photonic crystal (1DPC), which supports both Bloch surface wave (BSW) and internal modes for
wavelengths below 640 nm and only internal modes above 640 nm. The S-polarized emission spectra, with the
electric vector parallel to the 1DPC surface, were found to be strongly dependent on the observation angle
through the coupling prism. Also, the usual single broad-emission spectrum of Ru probe on glass was converted
into two or more narrow-band-spectrum on the 1DPC, with emission band maxima dependent on the observation
angle. The two S-polarized emission band peaks for Ru probe were found to be consistent with coupling to the
BSW and first internal mode (IM1) of the 1DPC. The same spectral shifts and changes in emission maxima were
observed by using Kretschmann and reverse Kretschmann illuminations. As the coupling requires the emitter to
be in proximity with the photonic structure, we calculated near- and far-field distributions of a dipole directly
located on the 1DPC surface. Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulations were performed to confirm
fluorophore coupling to the BSW and internal modes (IMs). Both the measured and simulated results showed that
IM coupled emission is significant. Coupling to the IM mode occurred at longer wavelengths where the 1DPC did
not support a BSW. These results demonstrate that a simple Bragg grating, without a BSW mode, can be used for
detection of surface-bound fluorophores
Thickness dependence of surface plasmon polariton dispersion in transparent conducting oxide films at 1.55 μm
We experimentally demonstrate propagation of surface plasmon polaritons in the near-IR window λ ∈ (1.45 μm, 1.59 μm) at the interface of indium-tin-oxide films with different thicknesses deposited on glass. Dispersion of such polaritons is strongly dependent on the film thickness, putting into evidence a regime in which polaritons at both films's interfaces are coupled in surface supermodes. The experimental data are shown to be in good agreement with the analytical model for thin and absorbing conducting films. Measurements on aluminum-doped zinc oxide, characterized by a redshifted plasma resonance, do not show any surface plasmon polariton excitation in the same wavelength window
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Reconfigurable elastomeric graded-index optical elements controlled by light
AbstractIn many optical applications, there is an increasing need for dynamically tunable optical elements that are able to shape the wavefront of light ‘on demand’. In this work, an elastomeric easy-to-fabricate optical element whose transmission functions can be reversibly phase configured by visible light is demonstrated. The light responsivity of proper azopolymers incorporated within an elastomeric matrix is exploited to induce a light-controlled graded refractive index (GRIN) distribution within the bulk compound. The induced refractive index distribution is continuous and conformal to the intensity profile of the illumination at moderate power. A 100 mW doubled-frequency Nd:YAG Gaussian beam focused to a 650 μm waist is shown to induce a maximum relative refractive index change of ~0.4% in the elastomeric matrix, with an approximately parabolic profile. The restoring characteristics of the elastomeric matrix enable full recovery of the initial homogeneous refractive index distribution within a few seconds when the incident laser is switched off. As an exemplary application, the configurable GRIN element is used in a microscope-based imaging system for light control of the effective focal length.</jats:p

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
