The Morbid and the Touristic: a Visual Analysis of the Tourist Gaze Towards Dark Tourism in Social Media
No full textÖlüm, felaket ve ürkütücülükle ilişkilendirilen yerlere seyahat olarak tanımlanan karanlık turizm, hem akademik hem de kamusal olarak büyük ilgi görmektedir. Ancak sosyal medyanın yükselişi ve görüntüleme teknolojilerindeki ilerlemeler, bu alanların algılanma, deneyimlenme ve paylaşılma biçimlerini de dönüştürmüştür. Bu tez, karanlık turizm olgusu etrafında yaratılan görsel kültürü, sosyal medyada ifade edildiği şekliyle turist bakışı kapsamında incelemektedir. Bu araştırma, öncelikle turist bakışı ve gösterileştirmenin popüler ölüm ve trajedi mekanları etrafında belirli bir görsel kültür yaratmadaki dönüştürücü etkisine odaklanmaktadır. Bu çalışma, karanlık turizm alanlarına yönelen turist bakışının ve bu alanların görselleştirilmesinin, görsel kültürü ve estetik tarzları önemli ölçüde değiştirdiğini ve sonuçta sosyal medyada karanlık turizmin farklı temsillerini ürettiğini iddia etmektedir. Bu tez aynı zamanda karanlık turizmin çok katmanlı bir turist bakışına sahip olduğunu da savunmaktadır. Bu tez için özel olarak tasarlanmış hibrit bir araştırma yöntemi kullanılarak, Instagram'da kullanıcı tarafından oluşturulan içerikler analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma, içerik ve görsel analiz yoluyla karanlık turizm destinasyonlarıyla ilişkili baskın anlatıları ve görsel temsilleri tanımlamaktadır. Bu tez, bu yerleri çevreleyen turist bakışını detaylandırmak için fotoğrafın görsel stillerinin eleştirel okumalarını birleştirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu yerleri ziyaret ederken tartışılan etik kuralları konusu da, bu etkileşimin yazılı olmayan kurallarının genel görsel kültürü etkileyip etkilemediğini belirlemek için ele alınacaktır. Genel olarak bu tez, sosyal medyanın dinamik ve yaygın etkisini göstermek için turist bakışı kavramlarını bu alanların gösterileştirilmesiyle bütünleştirerek karanlık turizm söylemini ilerletmekte ve bu trajedi alanlarının dijital çağda nasıl etkileşime girdiğine dair incelikli bir bakış açısı sunmaktadır.Dark tourism, defined as travel to sites associated with death, disaster, and macabre, has garnered significant attention both academically and publicly. The rise of social media and the advancements in imaging technologies have transformed how these sites are perceived, experienced, and shared. This dissertation explores the visual culture created around the phenomenon of dark tourism through the scope of the tourist gaze as articulated on social media. This research primarily focuses on the tourist gaze and spectacularization's transformative impact in engendering a particular visual culture around popular sites of death and tragedy. This study claims that the tourist gaze directed towards dark tourism sites and the spectacularization of these sites significantly alter the visual culture and aesthetic styles that eventually produce different representations of dark tourism in social media. This dissertation also argues that dark tourism has a multi-layered tourist gaze. By employing a hybrid research method that is specifically designed for this dissertation, user-generated content on Instagram was analyzed. The research identifies the dominant narratives and visual representations associated with dark tourism destinations through content and visual analysis. Centering on three acknowledged dark tourism sites, the dissertation will focus at Auschwitz, Chernobyl, and Pompeii. This dissertation aims to combine critical readings of the visual styles of photography to elaborate on the tourist gaze surrounding these places. The debated issue of etiquette while visiting these sites will also be considered to determine whether the unwritten rules of this interaction affect the overall visual culture. Overall, this dissertation advances the discourse on dark tourism by integrating the concepts of the tourist gaze along with the spectacularization of these sites to illustrate the dynamic and pervasive influence of social media, offering a nuanced perspective on how these sites of tragedy are engaged in the digital age
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
