    Henkisen kehityksen kaksi mallia

    Get PDF
Of the two models of mental development referred to by the author, one is the prevailing “model of the expert” where the main aim of intellectual education is a wide store of scientific knowledge and the use of expertise in the solving of problems. Thanks to the model, science and technology have developed enormously starting from the Renaissance. The other model is referred to by the author as the model of mental growth of the Ancient times, the “model of the sage”. In this way, the article is an examination the usefulness of the models – on the part of wisdom there is a special emphasis on creative ability to survive – in a person’s life situations and life course. The author uses the models of mental growth for constructing a further synthesis, a model of bipolar expertise.Henkisen kehityksen kaksi mallia. Toista mallia kirjoittaja luonnehtii antiikin henkisen kasvun malliksi, ”viisauden malliksi”. Artikkelissa eritellään näin mallien käyttökelpoisuutta – viisauden osalta erityisesti luovaa selviytymiskykyä – ihmisen elämäntilanteissa ja elämän kulussa. Kirjoittaja konstruoi henkisen kasvun mallien pohjalta edelleen synteesin, kaksinapaisen asiantuntemuksen mallin

dissertationWildfires and wind-blown dust events are expected to increase through the end of the 21st century as a result of warmer temperatures and increasing aridity, which is being driven by climate change. There is a significant need to develop air quality modeling frameworks that can simulate the impacts of fires and dust in the future. Modeling wildfire and dust events is often difficult as both vary significantly in time and space, often requiring sophisticated high-resolution atmospheric transport models that can resolve fine-scale processes. A Lagrangian-based modeling framework was initially developed for Salt Lake City during the summers of 2007 and 2012 to evaluate model performance during two wildfire seasons. The model was able to replicate the timing of enhanced PM2.5 concentrations from wildfires; however, an underestimation was observed, which was attributed to the failure to include a wildfire plume rise parameterization. Additional work was carried out to determine the optimal configuration needed to accurately resolve the wildfire plume rise and the downwind smoke transport for a prescribed burn at Eglin Air Force Base, FL. From this analysis, recommendations were provided for the model configuration needed to accurately simulate the downwind transport of smoke. A separate modeling framework was developed for wind-blown dust, which was applied to the Wasatch Front during the spring of 2010. Final results from this study found that dust model simulations were able to successfully replicate two wind- blown dust episodes on 30 March and 27-28 April 2010. However, significant updates were needed for soil classifications within the model in order to account for dust production across dry lake beds. Simulations were then carried out to estimate the impacts of a desiccating Great Salt Lake on air quality along the Wasatch Front. From these simulations, it was determined that concentrations of harmful particulates increased by a factor of 2 across the Wasatch Front as a result of decreased Great Salt Lake water levels

Transitioning Energy (and) Landscapes: Exploring infrastructural, architectural and landscape symbiosis

    No full text
The North Sea region’s energy transition has begun. The prospect of how it will happen and what it will look like, however, is still shrouded in uncertainty. What is clear is that this is a mammoth project of unprecedented scale. The sheer quantity of renewables we need to integrate into our energy infrastructures will transform our peri-urban and rural landscapes as we know them. A new spatial order will arise: one of energy landscapes. This thesis has investigated this infrastructural and morphological transition through a transcalar ‘research by design’ approach. It has endeavoured to re-establish the role of architecture as an infrastructural enabler in a projected (extreme flooding and drought) scenario, developing a transcalar spatial order in the Scottish Highlands region of Brora. The project’s agency culminates in striving to achieve symbiosis between the infrastructural design of a proposed hydro-electric energy network, the receiving landscape and the habitable space needed for existing local life. The design focuses on water and electricity delivery to an existing distillery in the area, while also reinterpreting the typological arrangement of the distillery to be as energy efficient as possible. Ultimately, it seeks to break down the cultural divide between ‘urban’ and ‘landscape’.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Science

Migrant Smuggling by Sea (author P. Mallia) (Leiden/Boston : Martinus Nijhoff, 2010) : [book review]

Prikaz knjigeThe book studies various aspects of migrant smuggling by sea as a current threat to maritime security within the existing framework of the international law and state practice. Its aim is to determine the real efficiency of the existing system of the international law of the sea in the fight against the crime of migrant smuggling by sea. First, the factual background to the problem is described at the international level, with a special focus on the southern Mediterranean region. Thereby, migrant smuggling by sea is qualified as a threat to the national security and the fastest-growing transnational organized crime today. The distinction between migrant smuggling and human trafficking is drawn and the reader is introduced to the positive international law dealing with this area. Special attention is devoted to the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, Palermo 2000, and the supplementing Protocol against the Smuggling of Migrants by Land, Sea and Air, Palermo, 2000. The author analyses the methods and means of exercising state policies and the protection of public interests in combating the crime of migrant smuggling. She discusses the states’ various specific operational and technical approaches to the practical aspects of combating the crime, especially through the implementation of the ISPS Code and the SOLAS Convention. The author further analyses the powers and constraints of the states in the fight against migrant smuggling within various maritime zones according to the valid international law of the sea. Special attention is devoted to interception as a unilateral state practice. The humanitarian aspect of the problem is studied, including the principles of human rights and the duty to rescue all persons in danger at sea. The author thoroughly discusses various forms of international cooperation in combating the organized crime of migrant smuggling. She assesses the efficiency of the positive legal regime and the existing state practice. Using the examples of Australia, the USA and the EU, the author provides an analysis and a critical review of the practical difficulties that the states face when dealing with the problem of migrant smuggling. The departure of the state practice from what is strictly necessary and lawful is pointed out. It is suggested that such state practice should be considered a signal and a possible way forward in the future development of international law. This is an excellent monograph containing a thorough critical analysis of a current international problem; as such, it will be an important and valuable source for both scholars and professionals, as well as for the state administration

Generation of four human induced pluripotent stem cell lines from COVID-19 hospitalized patients with increased levels of cardiac Troponin in the acute infection phase developing or not myocarditis

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus, leading to mild to severe respiratory symptoms. Cardiovascular involvement is frequent and mainly manifests with myocarditis, arrhythmias, cardiac arrests, heart failure and coagulation abnormality. We generated human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) from four COVID-19 patients, all characterized by increased levels of high-sensitivity Troponin I (hsTnI) during the infection acute phase, who developed (n=2) or not (n=2) severe myocarditis, as COVID-19 complication. The established hiPSCs were characterized for pluripotency and genomic stability, and constitute a useful resource for studying the mechanisms underlying the variability in COVID-19 severe cardiac manifestations

Bacteriological and histological profile of turkeys condemned for cyanosis

Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has adopted the term cyanosis to describe a category of condemnation for poultry that is dark but has no other condemnable lesions. Two case-control studies (n = 30 pairs; n = 65 pairs) of 18-wk-old tom turkeys were conducted. A case was defined as a carcass condemned by the veterinary inspector for cyanosis, and a control carcass was one that passed inspection. Microbiological tests were conducted on samples of Pectoralis major and Gastrocnemius lacteralis. A modified Rappaport Vassiliadis medium was used for Salmonella, and a Petrifilm method was used to assess aerobic counts, coliform counts, and Escherichia coli. The Salmonella (qualitative) test was negative for all cases and controls, and there were no significant differences between the aerobic counts, coliform counts, and E. coli counts of case and control carcasses. Two pathologists conducted a blind histopathological study: there were no lesions compatible with those of septicemia-toxemia, as defined by CFIA and the USDA, nor any significant histopathological differences between the skin, P. major, G. lateralis, kidney, liver, spleen, small intestine, pancreas, lung, and heart of cases and controls. The inter-rater agreement between pathologists ranged from good to excellent (Kappa = 0.7 to 1.0). In the absence of important lesions and microbial contamination, carcasses with this color change alone should be suitable for human consumption.LR: 20061115; PUBM: Print; JID: 0401150; ppublishSource type: Prin

    Mielenterveyskuntoutujan sosiaalinen toimintakyky

    No full text
Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää, miten sosiaalisella kuntoutuksella mielenterveyskuntoutujien näkökulmasta pystytään tukemaan ja edistämään heidän sosiaalista toimintakykyään ja osallistumistaan yhteiskunnassa. Tutkimuksen aineisto on kerätty haastattelemalla mielenterveyskuntoutujia. Haastateltavat on kutsuttu tutkimukseen mielenterveyskuntoutujille tarkoitetun työkeskuksen kautta, jossa he osallistuivat sosiaalihuoltolain mukaiseen työtoimintaan. Aineisto koostuu yksilöhaastatteluista ja yhdestä ryhmähaastattelusta, johon osallistui kolme henkilöä. Aineisto on analysoitu sisällönanalyysillä. Tutkimus on teorialähtöinen, sitä ohjaa Jyrki Jyrkämän yksilön toimijuuden ulottuvuuksia erittelevä viitekehys. Aineiston analysoinnissa on hyödynnetty Derek Layderin kehittämää adaptiivisen teoretisoinnin mallia. Tutkimuksessa havaittiin mielenterveyskuntoutujien tarvitsevan monenlaista tukea arjesta selviytyäkseen.
