“Aging-and-Tech Job Vulnerability” : A proposed framework on the dual impact of aging and AI, robotics, and automation among older workers

As the aging population and workforce constitute a worldwide concern, it is becoming necessary to predict how the dual threat of aging and technology at work increases the job vulnerability of older workers and jeopardizes their employability and permanence in the labor market. The objective of this paper is twofold: (1) to analyze perceptions of artificial intelligence, robotics, and automation in work settings and the expected impact of these technologies on older workers to contextualize this emergent phenomenon; and (2) to propose a general model related to “Aging-and-Tech Job Vulnerability” to explain and predict the combined effect of aging and AI/robotics/automation on job insecurity and additional outcomes among older workers. The propositions of the Age-and-Tech Job Vulnerability model developed in this paper seek to present a first approach for the conceptual advance and research on this emerging phenomenon and entails several theoretical and practical implications for organizational psychology

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Does Hub-and-Spoke organization of healthcare system promote workers’ satisfaction?

    No full text
The healthcare services network is a recent organizational structure of healthcare services that are interdependent and organized as a network on the basis of the Hub-and-Spoke model. This questionnaire-based study analyzed socio-psychological well-being of health workers both in terms of team-related experience and individual satisfaction and engagement with one's work in a Hub-and-Spoke healthcare service in comparison to non-network healthcare service. Workers from two different public healthcare services involved in the treatment of the same skeletal rare diseases participated in the Study. We expected that working under a Hub-and-Spoke healthcare service-involving teamwork and cooperation among different healthcare services within the units, as well as among workers belonging to different units-would lead to greater psychological team-related and individual benefits. In line with predictions, the findings showed that under a Hub-and-Spoke healthcare service, health workers felt highly interdependent by their team fellows and developed shared cognitions (i.e., team mental models) about their integration and their tasks to a higher extent than non-network ones. They were also individually more satisfied of their job and displayed higher work engagement than non-network workers. Beneficial team-related dynamics, such as perceived interdependence, were responsible for the differences between the Hub-and-Spoke workers and non-network ones. The implications of the present findings were discussed in terms of promotion of health workers' satisfaction and well-being

An Italian validation of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale: Characterization of engaged groups in a sample of schoolteachers

The current study explored the psychometric properties of the Italian versions of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-17 and UWES-9). In particular, the aims were: (1) to evaluate its factorial valid - ity, in which we compared the fit of the one-factor model to that of the three-factor model for various ver - sions of the UWES; (2) to inspect the scale’s reliability through Cronbach’s alpha and inter-item correlation; and, (3) to classify teachers on the basis of their work engagement levels, using cluster-analyses, and to determine whether engaged teachers differ from their less engaged colleagues in terms of various outcomes correlates. Confirmatory factor analysis sup - ported the hypothesized three- factor structure — vigour, dedica - tion, absorption — of both UWES scales. However, while the three-fac - tor structure of the UWES-17 did not show a good approximation to the data, the UWES-9 showed an acceptable fit. Results of cluster analysis revealed that teachers who feel more engaged show higher levels of positive attitudes compared with those who are less engaged. To sum up, our findings showed that the short UWES can be used in Italy among schoolteachers for assessing and monitoring levels of work engagement

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
