Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Interculturation, development and cognition : the intercultural autobiographical memory

Our research is in the field of intercultural psychology and investigates the relation between an intercultural life experience and individuals’ autobiographical memories. We propose a general hypothesis that considers a significant link between a cultural contact experience and cognitive processes involved in the memory’s development. More precisely, it is through the autobiographical memory that our research analyzes the articulation of identity and memory processes in relation to a life experience in an intercultural situation, whether it is in a multicultural environment, a migration towards a new cultural environment, a plurality of cultural affiliations or many other configurations that the present world is filled with and for which the cultural contact is put in the foreground. On a practical level, our research considered two fields with different characteristics in terms of cultural contact: in France and in Singapore. Our research is based on a mixed methodology, the interview and the life story narrative are first used in a qualitative analysis. We then designed an online questionnaire addressing memories and cultural contact experiences. This questionnaire was proposed on the two fields of our research. Our sample consists of 246 participants (144 in France and 102 in Singapore) and we carried out a quantitative analysis of the collected data. Our research enables us to identify a distinction in the development and recalling of autobiographical memories between individuals who had an intercultural experience before the age of 12 (Early interculturation) and those who would have experienced it after (Late interculturation). Moreover, our research highlights the significant role of the ruminative exploration identity process in the implementation by individuals of identity metabolisations in the cultural contact

Nature is culture : when ecological consciousness is the fruit of the interculturation

Ce nouveau rapport à la nature, fruit de l’interculturation, est nommée « attitude Isomère ».The author examines the relationship that the French have with their immediate environment, in a context that combines an increase in the symbolic value of nature and the unbridled pursuit of its destruction. This questioning place the attitude at the heart of this research and suggests that values, images, emotions and the context in which the individual develops are all factors that determine it.The approach initiated also considers the intercultural dynamic and its intrapsychic effects. Since the intercultural personality forced to poly-referentiate is now understood as commonplace (Teyssier, 2010), the author's second hypothesis is that the structuring of the attitude towards nature can appear simple or complex, just like the structuring of the supposed determinants. The content of these assumptions implies that the study covers the whole of France and grasps the complexity of this issue. Therefore, a multidimensional questionnaire applied to a sample (N=304) makes it possible to test the two hypotheses presented. The analysis of the results shows that values and images influence the attitude towards nature. On the other hand, the existence of simple and complex structuring for each of the variables in the study is revealed. Nevertheless, the type of structuring of the determinants does not condition the type of structuring of the attitude. The author notes, however, that the diversity of available cultural sources and the fruit of current interculturations associated with an embodied ecological awareness, opens up a new operationalization of the Man-Nature relationship never experienced elsewhere. This new relationship with nature, the result of interculturation, is called the "Isomer attitude"

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Impact of the french-african mixed couple identity strategies on the feeling of normality and on the link between the foreign spouses and the host society

The adaptation pattern of an individual moving from his home country to a host country is not without consequences on his life. To regain self-control every individual develops a process of interculturation translated into very precise identity strategies. To enter an union can bring the foreign one to a better self assertion in the host country. From where the hypothesis according to which, the difference between the identity strategies of the members of mixed couples determines the foreign partner feeling of normality and the link he maintains with the host society. Our methodology is both quantitative and qualitative that we opted at first for a data collection by questionnaire then by semi-directive interviews. We realized our study in France with 70 French-African couples. Unexpected results were found concerning the impact of interculturation, trough the intercultural experience duration, on the foreign partner feeling of normality
