Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Hållbar utformning och förvaltning av vägrummet
The roadside environments are important for efficient and safe transports. These environments must not only be planned, but also managed. Sustainable planning must thus consider the maintenance phase. It is important to understand the connection between planning and management. This report investigates deficiencies in management of the roadside environment as well as the connection between planning and management of these environments
Ecosystem services in municipal spatial planning.
The Swedish government decided in 2012 that the importance of biodiversity and the value of ecosystem services should be integrated in planning and other decision processes latest in 2018. However, it is not self-evident how to implement the importance of biodiversity and the value of ecosystem services in spatial planning practice. The aim of this report is to explore how far Swedish municipalities have progressed regarding the integration of ecosystem services in urban spatial planning and what can be learnt from the efforts so far. The data for this progress re-port was gathered by means of a telephone survey. The results show that the integration of ecosystem services is in an early stage in Swedish planning practice. However, the lack of practical experiences makes many planners hesitant to get started. The overall picture is that most planners seem to regard it as a technical issue that can be solved by experts and assessment/ planning tools. For future spatial planning practice it is recommended that value of ecosystem services should be negotiated instead of assessed by experts
Urban greening strategies for compact areas
Planning of compact and green urban areas has become an emerging issue. Thus, there is a need to examine strategies for implementing green infrastructures in compact urban areas. The aim of this paper is to examine how green infrastructure is developed in a compact urban structure in a case study of the city of Malmö. Six examples of urban greening were selected. The selection was made to obtain a variety of types of green spaces that were not public parks and that were devel- oped (or were intended to be developed) in compact urban structures. The findings suggest that there are reasons for analysing and discussing urban greening strategies in new categories, like building attached, grey and brown green infrastructure. The supply and distribution of cultural ecosystem services that these strategies offer were assessed by how they offer access for viewing, staying or interacting with the places. In this assessment the green infrastructure was divided in public, private and private-personal structures. The limitations and possibilities of different strategies need to be further explored with respect to the kinds of services supplied as well as how benefits are distributed. Cultural eco- system services, such as recreation and social cohesion, cannot be taken for granted based on quantitative measures of green space alone. The spaces must be assessed in terms of types of access offered and who has access
Kommunal parkverksamhet med brukarmedverkan
During the last decade there has been a growing interest in public participation in operation and in decision making, in the public sector as a whole as well as in the public park sector in Sweden. The aim of the thesis was to study and analyse user participation in public park management and maintenance. The methods employed were studies of literature, studies of historical source material, two surveys and eight case studies. The thesis discusses four questions: Which are the prerequisites for users participation?; Does user participation affect the benefits of parks for the non-participants?; Does user participation affect the basis for park management?; Does user participation affect parks? The thesis also discusses the concepts of parks, public park departments, public park management, users and user participation. There were several reasons for participation, e.g.; the need to improve neighbourhood environment; to protect play- and sports ground from being closed down or to enjoy the possibilities of outdoor work together with friends. Knowledge of the opportunities to participate, an easy access to, and an informal dialog with, the employees of the park departments facilitated participation. The case studies gave examples of an increased use of parks as a result of participation. Case studies and surveys, however, gave examples of the risk of park spaces being privatize by means of intentional or unintentional territory marking. Participation called for new qualifications for the employees to be able to co-operate with both professional actors and unprofessional actors. The financial effect of user participation could be both positive and negative, but was as a whole insignificant. Though there was a widespread anxiety about maintenance-mistakes or self-interest decisions that could come out of participation, in several of the case studies participation meant better maintenance of the concerned parks
