Tra fine Seicento e inizio Settecento, i ritratti in negativo delle città porto, che ne sottolineavano il carattere empio, erano assai frequenti tanto nelle opere letterarie, quanto nelle fonti ufficiali. Ad essere bersaglio di tali strali erano in particolare i porti franchi accomunati, seppur con sfumature e regolamenti diversi, da specifiche libertà che li rendevano luoghi di alterità e sperimentazione. Era in particolare su Livorno che si andava sviluppando una “leggenda nera”. Proprio quei caratteri che ne favorivano il successo indiscusso nei commerci (le sue libertà fiscali e civili, una popolazione che oggi si direbbe multietnica, con usanze, religioni e quindi anche contatti e saperi diversi) erano visti come minaccia alla morale dei suoi cittadini. Se la stampa gesuitica aveva tutto l’interesse a presentare Livorno quale luogo di perdizione, quale palestra in cui le virtù dei propri padri
erano messe alla prova e temprate, internamente a Livorno si andava costruendo una narrazione ben diversa, tesa a presentare la città porto come luogo di devozione.
