The life and Story of Rosa Maria:Brazil's First Black Author

Thirty years after the release of Rosa Maria Egipcíaca's biography by Brazilian historian LuizMott in 1993, one of Rio de Janeiro's strongest carnival samba schools, Unidos do Viradouro, finally brought her name into Brazilian mainstream culture. Rosa Maria is Brazil's first black author, having written a book and letters of prophecy. Her story is global in both space and time. In her journey, Rosa traversed three different continents - Africa, South America and Europe - interconnected by the colonial ties of transatlantic slavery and Catholicism, and though she lived in the eighteenth century, her 'afterlife' extends until today, as will be described through the context of Brazil's carnival

    Sub Rosa

In this stunning debut novel, Amber Dawn subverts and transgresses the classic hero's quest adventure to create a dark post-feminist vision not for the faint of heart. Sub Rosa's reluctant heroine is known as "Little," a teenaged runaway unable to remember her real name; in her struggle to get by in the world, she stumbles upon an underground society of ghosts and magicians, missing girls and would-be johns: a place called Sub Rosa. Not long after she is initiated into this family of magical prostitutes, Little is called upon to lead Sub Rosa through a maze of feral darkness, both real and imagined--a calling burdened with grotesque enemies, strange allies, and memories from a foggy past. Written with a kind of gasping urgency, Sub Rosa is a beautiful and gutsy allegory of our times, a fairy-tale-like fantasia imbued with a grave, unapologetic realness. --From publisher description.Women's literatureFictionLGBTQ+Lesbian literatur

This is the first exhibition dedicated to the famous painter Salvator Rosa in Italy. Born in Neaple in 1615 he died in Rome in 1673. The author, that was studying the artist’s oeuvre and biography since many years, worked on the exhibition with many entries and was part of the scientific committee. She wrote also a big chapter on the activity of the painter in Florence, during the 1640th, and in Rome during the 1650th. Rich in unpublished material, the essay gives us a new idea on the biography and artistic production of Salvator Rosa painter and poet, leading artist of the turning point between Seventeenth and Eighteen Century

    Rosa Luxemburg: Periphery and Perception

    No full text
Rosa Luxemburg was a critical thinker and author of many political and social reflections which to readers of today seem quite up to date. Particularly in the Global South, there seems to exist a stronger interest in Luxemburg’s work today, which is not surprising at all, considering that many problems she thought about are still existent – especially there. The participants of the International Rosa Luxemburg Conference in Bodø, Norway, in March 2023, discussed her role in the 21st century in quite some detail. The present anthology contains the conference’s extended proceedings and particularly focuses on two important elements in regard to Luxemburg: Her role for and within the global ›periphery‹ and her ›perception‹ in relation to other intellectuals, social democracy or the political left in a broader sense of the spectrum

The Rosa Cornelia Veal Papers document the professional career, pedagogical philosophy, and personal life of Winthrop College Class of 1926 graduate Rosa Cornelia Veal (1904–1967), an educator whose work spanned elementary classroom instruction, teacher education, and curriculum development during the mid-twentieth century. The collection dates from 1904 to 1978, with the bulk of the materials concentrated between the 1930s and 1940s, corresponding to Veal’s tenure as an elementary school teacher and associate professor of elementary education at Ball State Teachers College. The collection contains a substantial body of teaching materials that provide insight into classroom practices, instructional methods, and educational priorities of the period. These include lesson manuals, workbooks, visual teaching aids, curriculum guides, and daily classroom records documenting student progress, instructional planning, and classroom activities. Particularly significant are Veal’s classroom record books from 1936–1937 and her extensive use of Compton’s Pictured Teaching Materials, which illustrate the emphasis on visual learning and subject-based instruction in elementary education.Veal’s contributions as an author and curriculum developer are reflected in her published and unpublished writings, including instructional materials created for classroom use and children’s books she helped to author, most notably I Learn to Write. Also included are developmental manuals and religious instructional works prepared under her guidance, demonstrating her interest in holistic child development and literacy education. Personal materials in the collection include journals and planners spanning two decades, which contain poetry, reflections on daily life, financial notes, reading excerpts, and personal observations. These writings provide a rare and intimate perspective on the professional and personal experiences of a woman educator during the early to mid-twentieth century. Biographical documents—such as probate records, census materials, school report cards, and family histories—further contextualize Veal’s life and career. The collection also documents Veal’s professional affiliations and community involvement, including her leadership in the Muncie, Indiana branch of the Association for Childhood Education and her membership in the teaching sorority Delta Kappa Gamma. Related materials include correspondence, event ephemera, name cards, and organizational records. Photographs dating from the early twentieth century through the 1940s depict Veal, family members, unidentified individuals, and travel scenes, offering visual context to her personal and professional life. Additionally, the collection includes a wide array of educational books used by Veal as both a student and educator, as well as miscellaneous ephemera reflecting intellectual, cultural, and everyday interests. Together, the Rosa Cornelia Veal Papers provide a rich resource for research on elementary education, teacher training, women educators, curriculum development, and the lived experience of professional women in education during the twentieth century.https://digitalcommons.winthrop.edu/manuscriptcollection_findingaids/2779/thumbnail.jp

[[alternative]]A Taxonomic Study of Rosa L. (Rosaceae) in Taiwan

    No full text
[[abstract]]The genus Rosa Linneaus (Rosaceae) in Taiwan is taxonomically revised based on morphological, palynological and phytogeographical studies. Morphology of leaves and stipules are most important characters for the classification of Taiwan taxa. Flower color, styles and hips are useful characters in distinguishing some taxa. Pollen exine sculpture also shows little interspecific difference. Altitudinal, different distribution over different altitudes can also provide useful information. As a result, nine taxa in Taiwan were recoginzed, including one new species R. pubinervis. Rosa morrisonensis is elevated to species level. Rosa bracteata var. scabriacaulis and R. bracteata var. taiwanensis are treated as synonym of R. bracteata. Rosa henryi is treated as synonym of R. sambucina, and Rosa multiflora var. formosana as synonym of R. transmorrisonensis. Both R. taiwanensis and R. sambucina var. mushaniana are treated as synonyms of R. pricei var. pricei. The existence of R. luciae var. rosea in Taiwan is reconfirmed and transferred as R. pricei var. rosea. Rosa luciae is excluded in the study.
