The article analyses the relationship between the sociological research on the metropolis developed by Guido Martinotti (1938-2012) and the institutional history of metropolitan areas in Italy, from the second half of the 1980s to the present day. It shows how Martinotti conceived of the metropolitan scale as a relevant dimension for the study of contemporary urban societies. I argue that the poor reception of Martinotti's work in the scientific discourse depends on the underlying contradiction of his sociological research questions with the metropolitan institutional context, and on the lack of a shared epistemological basis in the field of urban studies
Regulation and Water Management in the Milan Urban Region
Drawing on different theoretical perspectives and disciplinary approaches, this chapter considers the issue of water management in high-density urban regions and the role of planning regulations in promoting more sustainable city-water relationships. The authors investigate the effectiveness of such regulations in complex territories and their significance for a variety of actors (policy-makers, hydraulic engineers, urban planners, local citizens, environmental grassroots movements, etc.) through a collection of empirical materials, including in-depth interviews. The chapter traces the application in the Seveso Creek Basin of the regulatory instrument n. 7/2017 on hydraulic and hydrologic invariance, recently issued by the regional government of Lombardy (Italy). The analyses highlight the obstacles that this set of rules has to face in a highly contentious case, characterised by high levels of pollution, soil sealing, institutional segmentation and localised contestation. By recognising the complexity of the Seveso Creek Basin, the chapter shows how this regulatory instrument is being used proactively by important planning actors and institutions of the Milan urban region, to preserve its potential to bring about positive outcomes in the future, when it may consolidate as part of the existing assemblage of water, rules, infrastructures, policies, institutions, experts, and citizens of the Seveso Creek Basin
Apparent Metabolisability of Diets Containing Concentrate, Zostera Noltii or Taraxacum Officinalis in Anas Penelope
Four metabolisability trials on captive Wigeons were conducted comparing a complete pelleted diet with others
where Taraxacum officinalis and Zostera noltii were added. The daily dry matter (DM) intake of Wigeons varied
from 54.4 to 65.5 g/day and the amount of nutrients received from the four diets was similar. The nitrogen (N)
content of droppings statistically diminished when Wigeons were fed diets containing Zostera noltii. Correlation
among cell wall components (CWC) of droppings and that of intakes was always highly significant and positive. The
DM metabolisability of the four diets was 42-51 %. The crude protein (CP) metabolisability varied significantly from
21 % for the diet with Taraxacum to 39 % for that with the Zostera collected in June. The metabolizabilities of CWC
also differed significantly among diets. The apparent metabolizabilities of ash with the Zostera diets were
significantly higher when compared to those of two other diets
Representing the Milan metropolitan region from a public policy perspective
The present paper proposes a three-axis method for identifying metropolitan regions in a European context that was developed from a public policy perspective within the field of regional geography. Drawing on a harmonised definition of functional urban area and a case-specific literature review, the proposed method can be applied to urban regions characterised by multiple territorial development patterns. This paper focuses on the metropolitan node of Milan within the urban network of northern Italy. First, the concept of functional territorial scale is used to assess the city-regional scale of Milan. Then, based on available geographical descriptions of metropolitan Milan, the metropolitan region is defined as a set of labour market areas, rather than as a single metropolitan area. Finally, some demographic and employment trends that have characterised the Milan metropolitan region and its emerging territorial imbalances over time are highlighted. Having identified a metropolitan territorial unit of Milan, the paper outlines some linkages between city-regional development and metropolitan institutional policy
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
