    O verdadeiro Carácter de D. Fernando, o Infante Santo

    No full text
    Júlio Dantas and Oliveira Martins describe the character of D. Fernando, D. Duarte and D. Henrique (Prince Henry, the Navigator) in such an ignominious way that it neither takes into account the medieval spirit of crusades and chivalry, nor does it correspond to the objective truth. The author demonstrates that Júlio Dantas and Oliveira Martins based their opinion upon the informations provided by the chronist Rui the Pina. Other sources, however, show us that Rui de Pina manipulated the facts writing down one of the multiple versions available about the dreadful events in Tanger. According to the one‑sided vision of the truth presented by Rui the Pina, D. Duarte is shown as a weak, narrow‑minded king. D. Henrique, Master of the Order of Christ, successor to the Order of the Temple, is painted as a reckless warrior and is considered the one who is to be blamed for the tragic outcome of the events: according to Pina, he alone carries upon himself the heavy burden of the responsability. D. Fernando is painted either as a victim, or as an ambitious, selfish and greedy person. The author shows that there has been a clear distortion of the facts. D. Henrique and D. Fernando just followed the noble principles of 15th century chivalry, as they had been taught to them by their mother, D. Philippa of Lancaster. On the other side, they aimed at the objectives of the Order of Christ

Abstract : The construction of Fernando Henrique Cardoso?s legacy has been developed based on the mark of structuring ruptures and dichotomies, characteristics that are both articulated around the idea of the transition from the intellectual to the political activity, in a process that reinforces strong features of the Brazilian political imagination. Anchored in a criticism of this view, this study investigates what the process of formation of the author?s legacy developed until the present moment reveal about the forms through which the ?Brazilian political thought? is produced and reinvented, or, in other words, what his personal intellectual trajectory represents in relation to the collective thought trajectory designated by this expression. Two main interpretative theses are tested throughout this work: the first one is that the continuity and the unity between the several moments of Cardoso?s intellectual trajectory (denied by the approaches that, until the present moment, have been systematizing his legacy) can be reconstructed and recuperated if the emphasis of the analysis lies in the political specificity of his writings - assuming that both the reconstructing and the recuperation, obviously, do not fail to consider possible inconsistencies, incoherences and changes in the beliefs of the author throughout his trajectory; and second , that such political thought , without disregarding other sources generally labeled as ?universal? , is structured from a selective, systematic and continuous dialogue with some of the main forms of interpretation of the policy in the country, this dialogue , on the one hand , makes it possible to show the existence of a worldview to act as ?common thread? for all of his thought (giving him a sense of coherence), and on the other, to understand the impact of this ressignificador thinking about such matrices. The work is organized in three parts: in the first, the field of the Brazilian political thought is theoretical and methodologically questioned; in the second part, the specificity of the author?s political reflection is discussed based on two different moments (the establishment and the consolidation of his political beliefs); and, in the third part, in an attempt of approximating the two previous parts, the specificity of the insertion of the author?s political thought in the Brazilian political thought field is discussed, which is based on two variables: the filiations and the receptions

    Heuristic Schelling: economy of organized crime

    No full text
    This article proposes a reading of the armed conflict from an evolutionary design that takes into account the concept of private protection agencies in the works of Schelling. Their aim is to assess the dynamics of conflict and changes from its author's scientific output. A context of conflicts that includes new expressions of violence and the relative failure of the paramilitary reintegration involves using new analytical models (argumentation, game theory and inconsistent information). The recent evolution of emerging gangs and their expansion into areas that were paramilitary camps requires monitoring not only of the government and the authorities, but those investigating the conflict in the present tense. The author provides heuristic research support from Schelling’s theory of strategy, recent contributions to the relationship between organized crime and drug cartels.Colombia, Government, Civil War, Latin America, Security, Protection Agencies.

    Dinámicas del pensamiento político boliviano: Análisis mimético de las obras de René Zavaleta Mercado y H.C.F. Mansilla

    The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the potential contributions of combining two Bolivian essayists’ thought and a general theory or philosophy. René Zavaleta Mercado and H. C. F. Mansilla are two of the most important Bolivian sociologists from the twentieth century and represent two different and somewhat opposed traditions of thought: Marxism and aristocratic conservatism. The richness of their thought and work, though, allows me to consider what kind of similarities can be found between their ideas and the ones we can find in mimetic theory, as developed by French anthropologist of religion, René Girard. The connections between the ideas of the two sociologists and the philosophical theory are done through a consideration of one event and five concepts that I believe are central in their work: The Bolivian Revolution of 1952; Nation and nationalism; Crisis; the subjects of history; the organization of the State and democracy; and the obstacle that impedes the development of Bolivia. As I try to show, all these concepts relate in a way that can give a complete image of the thought of the two sociologists in the light of several theories they use: from Marxism in many variants, to aristocratism, to Liberalism. All these connections have a transversal skeleton that holds them together: the philosophical and anthropological tenets of mimetic theory. It is through mimetic theory that it can be shown how both sociologists are concerned with the transformation of under-developed societies into modern societies. This concern is then deployed into a problematic that goes back and forth between a pole of differentiation and identity, and a pole of crisis and loss of differences. Each author has his own strategies to think about this conjuncture and proposes different ideas that can be better interpreted, understood and problematized through the lenses of mimetic theory

    The occurrence of the 400 year anniversary of Fernando Mergulhão’s death (14th November 1604-2004), abbot of S. Clemente de Basto, judge of the High Court of Archbishop D. Frei Bartolomeu dos Mártires, and founder of Moimenta da Beira Monastery provided the author with subject matter to dwell on the Mergulhão family and the Benedictine monastery. In truth, Fernando Mergulhão belonged to a family of Spanish origin, followed an ecclesiastical career, as well as his brother, who became a Jesuit. Of his four sisters, only one married, and the others entered the Semide Monastery, in Coimbra, as Benedictine nuns. It was certainly for them, and for remedy of his soul and his parents’, that he decided to found with his patrimony the Monastery of Our Lady of the Purification in his native land. The author traces the history of the monastery, founded in 1596 and closed around 1812, at which time its nuns were integrated in the Convent of Chagas, Lamego

    Slide 1 ⚡ Discover a New Algorithm for Integer Composition Detection By Marlon Fernando Polegato ✅ Deterministic ✅ No probabilistic tests ✅ Uses only decimal digit manipulation --- Slide 2 How it works: Step-by-step 1. Multiply n by a constant k ∈ {3, 7, 9} 2. Let nk = n × k 3. Split: A = nk // 10 (all digits but the last) d = nk % 10 (last digit) --- Slide 3 Loop until d > sqrt(nk) or A < d At each step: Check if d > 1 Check if d divides both A and n If so, ✅ d is a valid divisor of n Otherwise, set A -= 1, d += 10 --- Slide 4 Python in one function (Save, test, and reuse) def f(n): for k in(3,7,9): nk,A,d=n*k,n*k//10,n*k%10 while d<=int(nk**.5)and A>=d: if d>1 and A%d==0 and n%d==0:return d A-=1;d+=10 --- Slide 5 Test examples: f(77) # ➝ 11 f(143) # ➝ 11 f(169) # ➝ 13 f(221) # ➝ 13 f(13) # ➝ None (prime) --- Slide 6 Why it matters: No factor tables No randomness No modular ops Fast, accurate, elegant Runtime: ~0.0003s (for n < 1000) Handles large semiprimes up to 10^20 --- Slide 7 Get the full paper (PDF): "Efficient Integer Composition Detection via Decimal Digit Patterns and Redistribution" Author: Marlon Fernando Polegat
