    Chain-End Controlled Depolymerization Selectivity in α,α-Disubstituted Propionate PHAs with Dual Closed-Loop Recycling and Record-High Melting Temperature

    Within the large poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate) (PHA) family, C3 propionates are much less studied than C4 butyrates, with the exception of α,α-disubstituted propionate PHAs, particularly poly(3-hydroxy-2,2-dimethylpropionate), P3H(Me)2P, due to its high melting temperature (Tm ∼ 230 °C) and crystallinity (∼76%). However, inefficient synthetic routes to its monomer 2,2-dimethylpropiolactone [(Me)2PL] and extreme brittleness of P3H(Me)2P largely hinder its broad applications. Here, we introduce simple, efficient step-growth polycondensation (SGP) of a hydroxyacid or methyl ester to afford P3H(Me)2P with low to medium molar mass, which is then utilized to produce lactones through base-catalyzed depolymerization. The ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of the 4-membered lactone leads to high-molar-mass P3H(Me)2P, which can be depolymerized by hydrolysis to the hydroxyacid in 99% yield or methanolysis to the hydroxyester in 91% yield, achieving closed-loop recycling via both SGP and ROP routes. Intriguingly, the chain end of the SGP-P3H(Me)2P determines the depolymerization selectivity toward 4- or 12-membered lactone formation, while both can be repolymerized back to P3H(Me)2P. Through the formation of copolymers P3H(Me/R)2P (R = Et, nPr), PHAs with high tensile strength and ductility, coupled with high barriers to water vapor and oxygen, have been created. Notably, the PHA structure-property study led to P3H(nPr)2P with a record-high Tm of 266 °C within the PHA family

    Microstructural, Mechanical, and Durability Related Similarities in Concretes Based on OPC and Alkali-Activated Slag Binders

    abstract: Alkali-activated slag concretes are being extensively researched because of its potential sustainability-related benefits. For such concretes to be implemented in large scale concrete applications such as infrastructural and building elements, it is essential to understand its early and long-term performance characteristics vis-à-vis conventional ordinary portland cement (OPC) based concretes. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the property and performance features including early-age isothermal calorimetric response, compressive strength development with time, microstructural features such as the pore volume and representative pore size, and accelerated chloride transport resistance of OPC and alkali-activated binder systems. Slag mixtures activated using sodium silicate solution (SiO[subscript 2]-to-Na[subscript 2]O ratio or M[subscript s] of 1–2) to provide a total alkalinity of 0.05 (Na[subscript 2]O-to-binder ratio) are compared with OPC mixtures with and without partial cement replacement with Class F fly ash (20 % by mass) or silica fume (6 % by mass). Major similarities are noted between these binder systems for: (1) calorimetric response with respect to the presence of features even though the locations and peaks vary based on M[subscript s], (2) compressive strength and its development, (3) total porosity and pore size, and (4) rapid chloride permeability and non-steady state migration coefficients. Moreover, electrical impedance based circuit models are used to bring out the microstructural features (resistance of the connected pores, and capacitances of the solid phase and pore-solid interface) that are similar in conventional OPC and alkali-activated slag concretes. This study thus demonstrates that performance-equivalent alkali-activated slag systems that are more sustainable from energy and environmental standpoints can be proportioned

    Norm-Scaling for Out-of-Distribution Detection

    Out-of-Distribution (OoD) inputs are examples that do not belong to the true underlying distribution of the dataset. Research has shown that deep neural nets make confident mispredictions on OoD inputs. Therefore, it is critical to identify OoD inputs for safe and reliable deployment of deep neural nets. Often a threshold is applied on a similarity score to detect OoD inputs. One such similarity is angular similarity which is the dot product of latent representation with the mean class representation. Angular similarity encodes uncertainty, for example, if the angular similarity is less, it is less certain that the input belongs to that class. However, we observe that, different classes have different distributions of angular similarity. Therefore, applying a single threshold for all classes is not ideal since the same similarity score represents different uncertainties for different classes. In this paper, we propose norm-scaling which normalizes the logits separately for each class. This ensures that a single value consistently represents similar uncertainty for various classes. We show that norm-scaling, when used with maximum softmax probability detector, achieves 9.78% improvement in AUROC, 5.99% improvement in AUPR and 33.19% reduction in FPR95 metrics over previous state-of-the-art methods

    URI Disambiguation in the Context of Linked Data

    The Linked Data initiative has given rise to an increasing number of RDF datasets, many of which are freely accessible online. These resources often arise as a result of database exports; however sufficient consideration may not be given to the unseen implications caused when they are used in the wider context of the Semantic Web. This paper investigates two popular resources, DBLP and DBpedia, and discusses whether the issues regarding identity management and co-reference resolution have been suitably addressed. We find that a large percentage of authors in DBLP have been conflated, and that disambiguation pages have been incorrectly linked using owl:sameAs within DBpedia. Systems for dealing with these issues are presented, and directions are given for future research

    A study on Accounting students' perception on employability skills in University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Muscat

    Abstract: Universities are expected to contribute the economic growth of the country by preparing the graduates with necessary academic skills. Students are focusing more on knowledge or the course contents but put less effort on the skill that are inventible for them to master in their chosen field. This study is focusing on the perception of accounting graduates of UTAS about employability skill that they should possess. The study found that the students feel Learning and Development skills are not necessary for employability irrespective of gender or the year of study. Learning and Development skills include working in teams, able to adapt technology, communication skills, lifelong learning and problem solving skills. When subject knowledge is compared with the year of study, the authors found that the students did not give importance to subject knowledge as well. However, Life/Career skills are considered to be valuable skills by the students whether it is compared with gender or year of study. The authors recommend that the students must be educated on the importance of Learning and development skills and subject knowledge, which will help them in securing a good job in the future.
