    ‘Anne as Pagan, Anne as Queer’ is a critical and creative answer to the question: How do we construct Anne Shirley, and what does she mean to us? This creative research submission is a work of fanfiction, specifically a mash up based on Anne of the Island, L.M.M. Montgomery’s sequel to Anne of Green Gables. In this short work of fiction (under 4 thousand words) Anne is revealed as a changeling, one of the Faerie Folk, and also a being not strictly male or female; sometimes neither, sometimes both. The mash up is based on the last two chapters of Anne of the Island, the scenes in which Gilbert Blythe is seriously ill and Anne realises she loves him. This realisation causes Anne, in this version, to reveal to Gilbert that she is both non-human and not a girl, and to use Faerie magic to save Gilbert’s life. Anne’s revelation causes Gilbert a great relief, as he has been keeping a secret also - that he too is queer. The piece has an accompanying research statement and reflection, that reflects on the ways the contributor/author interprets Anne, as a being troubled by gender, and not strictly gender conforming. The much-loved scene from Anne of Green Gables in which Anne realises she is not wanted by the Cuthberts because she is not a boy is inserted into the mash up (as a memory) as this scene is the principal cause for the contributor’s identification with Anne as a gender non-conforming figure who resists gender expectations.     Award-winning fiction author Emilie Richards discussed her works at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 1 in Greenwood Library at Longwood University. The program, sponsored by the Friends of the Janet D. Greenwood Library, was preceded by a reception at 6 p.m. and followed by a book signing. Books for sale at the event include Happiness Key, Fortunate Harbor, and Sister\u27s Choice.Richards\u27 newest book, A Truth for a Truth, was available for pre-sale. Richards is author of more than 60 fiction novels focusing on family and romance. Many of her novels feature complex characterizations and in-depth explorations of social issues, a result of her training and experience as a family counselor. Some of her popular series include Happiness Key, Ministry is Murder, Shenandoah Album, and Men of Midnight. In 2004 Richards began a series of single-title novels focused on quilting. The novels were inspired by her work as a volunteer teaching quilting to residents of the Arkansas Ozark Mountains while she was an undergraduate student at Florida State University. In 1994 she earned the RITA Award, the most prominent award given throughout the genre of romantic fiction, from the Romance Writers of America. She also earned a career achievement award from Romantic Times magazine and has been interviewed on both television and radio and quoted in Reader\u27s Digest

    A sojourn in Paris 1824-25: sex and sociability in the manuscript writings of Anne Lister (1791-1840)

    This thesis examines the day to day practices that constituted Anne Lister's (1791-1840) sexuality and sociability within the range of her writings, as well as her society. Anne's writings were a detailed account, spanning her lifetime, of her own love and relationships with the 'fairer sex' (Whitbread 1988, 145). Anne's sociality, seen in her correspondence and plain handwritten journal entries, has been explored by Muriel Green in Miss Lister of Shibden Hall and Jill Liddington in Female Fortune and Nature's Domain (Green 1992; Liddington 1998; 2003). As a gentlewoman of adequate means, Anne has garnered some attention from women's historians interested in her agency within an early nineteenth century social and historical context. Anne's sexual identity has been extensively analysed over the past nearly twenty years by lesbian feminists, queer theorists, women's historians and historians of sexuality concerned with the history and development of modern Western female homosexuality and gender. The source for theorising Anne's sexuality has been the edited selections of the crypted journal entries, published by Helena Whitbread in I Know My Own Heart and No Priest but Love (Whitbread 1988; 1992). However, many analyses deal either with the theorisation of Anne's sexuality or her sociality; the theoretical difficulty with reconciling these categories has troubled the analysis of her complex subjectivity. Drawing upon the archival materials, I have used an interdisciplinary feminist approach to analyse the sexual and social processes of Anne's everyday interactions in her writings. Taking the seven month period of the sojourn to Paris in 1824-25, I have focused upon Anne's textual practices within her journal volume and letters during her residence in Paris, her social practices with the other guests at the guesthouse 24 Place Vendome and her sexual practices with her lover, the widow Mrs. Maria Barlow. The journal volumes and correspondence are a valuable historical record of one gentlewoman's engagement with early nineteenth century British culture

    peer reviewedPURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide a perspective by investigating the potential cross-talk between the adipose tissue and the kidney during obesity. RECENT FINDINGS: It is well established that excessive caloric intake contributes to organ injury. The associated increased adiposity initiates a cascade of cellular events that leads to progressive obesity-associated diseases such as kidney disease. Recent evidence has indicated that adipose tissue produces bioactive substances that contribute to obesity-related kidney disease, altering the renal function and structure. In parallel, proinflammatory processes within the adipose tissue can also lead to pathophysiological changes in the kidney during the obese state. SUMMARY: Despite considerable efforts to better characterize the pathophysiology of obesity-related metabolic disease, there are still a lack of efficient therapeutic strategies. New strategies focused on regulating adipose function with respect to AMP-activated protein kinase activation, NADPH oxidase function, and TGF-β may contribute to reducing adipose inflammation that may also provide renoprotection

    abstract: ABSTRACT Emilie Mayer (1812-1883) was a prolific composer whose musical works, which encompassed eight symphonies, four overtures, an opera, dozens of sonatas, eight string quartets, solo piano works, and nearly 130 songs for solo voice or vocal quartet, were performed in the foremost concert halls in Berlin and across Germany. She studied with lauded teachers: Carl Loewe (1796-1869), Adolph Bernhard Marx (1795-1866), and Wilhelm Wieprecht (1802-1872). Her talent was applauded by audiences and critics wrote favorably, despite their reservations about women composers. However, even with this unusual pedigree, Mayer’s works nearly disappeared from concert stages after her death. How did this happen? This study aims to answer this question and will delve into Emilie Mayer’s life and works in context with the prejudices against female composers at the time, in order to determine how those biases have shaped the classical canon. Included is an in-depth stylistic analysis of Mayer’s surviving seven Lieder, along-side comparisons to similar works of other composers. In addition, appendices present Mayer’s remaining Lieder in a new, modernized edition, with selected songs transposed for better accessibility for lower voices. Relative lack of female representation in modern-day concert halls and music history books correlates to previous misconceptions of female composers. Studying the works of Emilie Mayer will support her addition to the classical repertoire, help correct the male-gendered canon that persists, and help modern female composers realize their history is not confined to a footnote.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Music 202
