    No full text
This paper applies Bakhtin\u27s views on the carnival world-view as a problem of the poeticsof genre to Bosman\u27s Cold Stone Jug. The book\u27s combination of the serious and thecomic testifies not to the author\u27s "idiosyncrasy", but to his adherence to a well-establishedEuropean cultural tradition.

CHAPTER 3 Reflections of Afrikaans in the English Short Stories of Herman Charles Bosman

    No full text
Herman Charles Bosman (1905-1951) was a bilingual English-Afrikaans author of short stories. His English stories, including the 60 Oom Schalk Lourens stories, represent Afrikaans characters in an Afrikaans cultural setting. This chapter examines the vocabulary and selected grammatical features in an electronic corpus of the Oom Schalk Lourens stories to determine the extent and authenticity of the reflection of Afrikaans culture through the English language. Results indicate that Afrikaans (and a limited number of Setswana) vocabulary items are used to denote people, the landscape and living spaces of characters, but also cultural practices such as terms of address, religion (including religious duplicity), and the history of the people. English grammatical structures that are at the margins on conventionality in English itself, but which correspond to Afrikaans grammatical structures, are used much more frequently by Bosman, to evoke the Afrikaans language grammatically. Bosman succeeds in treading a fine line between reflection of another language and culture and caricature, in order to tell stories of deceptive simplicity that serve as vehicle for his social criticism

The function of (maternal) cannibalism in the book of Lamentations (2:20 & 4:10)

CITATION: Bosman, H. L. 2012. The function of (maternal) cannibalism in the book of Lamentations (2:20 & 4:10). Scriptura, 110(2):152-165, doi:10.7833/110-0-107.The original publication is available at http://scriptura.journals.ac.zaCannibalism is a sensitive subject that many commentaries on the Book of Lamentations pay little attention to. This article develops the possibility that the Book of Lamentations confronts YHWH with the affliction that He has caused the destruction of Jerusalem and that maternal cannibalism is the horrendous extreme of this divinely inflicted suffering. This suggestion is discussed against the background of a central motif in later Greco-Roman literature that the tyrant is the inverted Other. Cannibalism may then be interpreted as a motif in the polemics against tyranny by the author of Lamentations to depict YHWH as author of the misery experienced with the destruction of Jerusalem and thereafter.http://scriptura.journals.ac.za/pub/article/view/107Publisher's versio

Designing the Radio Link for a Lunar CubeSat: the LUMIO Case

    No full text
The Lunar Meteoroid Impact Observer (LUMIO) is a mission designed to observe, quantify, and characterize the meteoroid impacts by detecting their flashes on the lunar far side. Earth-based lunar observations are restricted by weather, geometric and illumination conditions, while a lunar orbiter can improve the detection rate of lunar meteoroid impact flashes, as it would allow for longer monitoring periods. This paper will focus on the communications and radio navigation system of the mission, designed for the ESA roadmap for lunar exploration. LUMIO has been designed to operate autonomously after deployment from a lunar mother spacecraft in a low inclination lunar orbit and to reach without human intervention his final destination orbit close to the Earth-Moon L2 point, where science can be carried out. Being the destination orbit always in view from Earth (despite a distance of 460000 - 480000 km), Direct-to-Earth communication was added to the mission as a mean to reduce risk and allow independent verification of several of the innovative technologies that would be demonstrated, first of all autonomous navigation. A detailed link budget analysis will be presented for all mission phases for both the link with the mother spacecraft in low lunar orbit and the link with Earth. Beside defining the achievable data transfer, we will focus also on evaluating the available ground stations to better evaluate mission cost with respect to science return. Radio-navigation performances will also be evaluated to estimate the position and relative velocity accuracy, given also the limited performances available for the on-board navigation transponder. This will help also better defining the on-board autonomous navigation system, constraining the total error budget. Further strategies, such as beacon tones, will be evaluated to lower the overall operational cost by employing continuous monitoring with a low performances ground station and, only when needed, perform high speed downlink using a deep-space class ground station. This strategy is considered of extreme importance, especially for small missions, to allow opportunistic operations on high gain antennas, given their very busy schedule. White South African and Latter-day Bohemian Two Editions of Herman Charles Bosman

    No full text
This article surveys the publication history of Bosman’s works and the roles that he has played as author in his own eyes and those of his readers. During his lifetime, his stories appeared in periodicals which tended to be ephemeral, and he published in volume form only an early novel, his prison memoir and one volume of stories, which by his own account  were hastily selected. His former pupil and friend, Lionel Abrahams, took on the task after Bosman’s death of compiling a large selection of the rest of the work into volume form. Since at this stage Bosman was known as a writer to a relatively small circle, Abrahams could not justify the publication of anything but a generous selection of his work; but the resultant publications have been all-time best sellers in the South African market. Readers of this edition have often taken from the stories a perception of Bosman as in sympathy with the racism of his characters, an impression which the new, more complete edition edited by Stephen Gray and Craig MacKenzie will correct. Though the edition is not yet complete, and volumes will continue to appear until 2005, the centenary of Bosman’s birth, it is already possible to understand more of his beliefs and ambitions than the Abrahams edition allowed for.

Genetic Programming as an approach to the problem of synthesis

    No full text
Many problems do not have a direct solution in the form of a known algorithm or program to solve such a problem. These problems include, for example, the designing of electrical circuits and producing robots capable of locomotion. These are all part of a greater problem: the problem of synthesis. How can you make a computer design circuits and produce robots for you? In general, how can you automate the synthesis of anything that normally takes a great deal of human ingenuity? How a program should look to e.g. make robots walk is not known in advance, however the desired result is known. Genetic Programming provides a method to produce such algorithms or programs using evolutionary techniques applied iteratively to a population of programs to gain newer, more fitting programs which show the correct output. This paper gives an overview on the history of and developments in Genetic Programming. It describes Genetic Programming itself and where it fits among other Evolutionary Computation methods. Genetic Programming was studied and used by J. Koza which used GP for designing electrical circuits, GP is also used by H. Lipson to design the controller and morphology of robots.Computer ScienceElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Equal Treatment of Foreign Players in Freedom to Transfer: The Need to Introduce Bosman Ruling into Indonesian Law, The Case of Damian Linzio and Bring The Case to The Court of Arbitration of Sport

    No full text
[[abstract]]The Bosman ruling means that players could move/transfer to a new club at the end of their contract without paying their former clubs any fee. A players can now agree a pre-contract with another club for a free transfer if the players' contract with their existing club has six months or less remaining. Means that the Bosman Ruling as a pioneer in freedom of contract aspect in sport law. The problem in Indonesia according to Law Number 3 of 2005 on National Sport System in Indonesia there is no regulation regarding the freedom of contract for the sport member in Indonesia. There are cases that violate the Bosman Ruling against foreign football players Damian Linzio. Damian Linzio cannot solve his problems because in Indonesia there is no regulation related Bosman Ruling issues. This Research aim to adapted Bosman Ruling into Indonesian Sports Law based on law number 3 of 2005 concerning the National Sports System. Bosman Ruling is very important in sports law because it regulates the freedom of contract. The type of this research is a normative legal research. Normative legal research is a process to find a rule of law, principles of law, and the legal doctrines in order to address the legal issues faced Equal Treatment of Foreign Players in Freedom to Transfer: The Need to Introduce Bosman Ruling Into Indonesian Sports Law, Study Case of Damian Linzio and Bring The Case to The Court of Arbitration For Sport. The result of this research found that Indonesia need to applied Bosman Ruling as the pioneer of freedom of contract to Indonesian Sports Law. Bosman Ruling can be adapted in Law Number 3 of 2005 on National Sports System in Indonesia. For the case of Damian Linzio author to recommend bring the case to Court of Arbitration for Sport because they are more competent to resolve sports cases. Because in Indonesia there are no specific regulations regarding freedom of contract in the national sports law system

What Does Freedom of Movement Mean in an Enlarged EU? CEPS Working Documents No. 208, 1 October 2004

    No full text
The purpose of this report is to assess the main challenges to the principle of free movement of persons in theory and practice in an enlarged European Union. The right to move freely represents one of the fundamental freedoms of the internal market as well as an essential political element of the package of rights linked to the very status of EU citizenship. The scope ratione personae and the current state of the principle of free movement of persons is assessed by looking at the most recent case law of the European Court of Justice and the recently adopted Directive on the rights of citizens of the Union and their family members to move and reside freely within the territory of the member states. But what are the hidden and visible obstacles to free movement of persons in Europe? How can these barriers be overcome to make free movement and residence rights more inclusive? This working document addresses these questions along with: 1. Who are the beneficiaries of the free movement of persons in an enlarged Europe? 2. What is the impact of the recent legal developments in the freedom of movement dimension, such as the European Court of Justice case law and the new Directive? 3. To what extent are pro-security policies such as the Schengen Information System II and an enhanced interoperability between European databases fully compatible with the freedom of movement paradigm

    No full text
BACKGROUND: A 41-year-old woman presented to an endocrinology-gynecology clinic having been diagnosed 7 years earlier with polycystic ovarian syndrome on account of hirsutism, subfertility, greasy skin, acne and multiple ovarian cysts. Ovulation induction had led to a successful pregnancy. Subfertility recurred, however, and persisted alongside a new diagnosis of hypertension and progressive weight gain. Upon examination, the patient was hypertensive with facial plethora, rounded facies and violaceous abdominal striae. INVESTIGATIONS: Low-dose dexamethasone test, bedtime salivary and 24-h urinary free cortisol estimations, CT scan of the abdomen, and serum hormone and gonadotropin analyses. DIAGNOSIS: Cushing's syndrome due to a right adrenocortical adenoma. MANAGEMENT: The patient underwent laparoscopic right adrenalectomy, which led to resolution of all symptoms, signs and biochemical abnormalitie

"Come praticarono molti". Three-dimensional paper models in Italy

    No full text
In this paper the Author explores the use of three-dimensional paper models, a class of architectural scale models extensively used by architects and artists from 16th to 18th century to communicate their designs. The paper presents a group of drawings by leading Italian architects and artists of the Renaissance and Baroque period, that, thanks to the presence of certain cuts, folds, or tabs, have been possible to recognize as unfolded or disassembled three-dimensional paper models in various drawings collections worldwide. Through selected documents, many no longer existing paper models are also discussed in their proper cultural, material and social contexts, clarifying the role that paper models played in the difficult process of communicating ideas among architects and patrons, in the self-promotion of the architects through the spontaneous submission of appealing models in highly competitive artistic environments and in spreading novelties from major artistic centers to other cultural areas
