. .) have been of increasing interest for different applications (pharmacy, nuclear, materials, agronomy. . . ) over the last decade. The geometrical characterization of such particles is then required for a better knowledge and improvement of such processes. For this purpose, 2-D image acquisition provides a direct visualization of the projected particles. The proposed approach provides useful tools for characterizing the morphology of a population of particles by using a stochastic geometrical model. When dealing with 2-D images of granular media (satisfying the Boolean model hypothesis), such a model enables a population of projected/overlapping particles to be investigated, which is generally difficult with classical image analysis. The prospects of this work are to generalize this approach to more general situations than 2-D Boolean models

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

This thesis is part of the MORPHING project funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR) and addresses an industrial challenge posed by ARKEMA. It aims to develop methods for characterizing the 3D morphology of latex nanoparticle aggregates in an industrial context, using in-situ 2D images. The morphological properties of these aggregates strongly influence the quality of finished products and process efficiency, but can only be estimated through imaging under production conditions. The research combines two approaches: scientific, developing 3D stochastic geometric models that exploit 2D data from image analysis, and industrial, targeting near real-time implementation. The main contributions include three novel stochastic geometric models that generate 3D aggregates from 2D morphometric measurements, as well as a deep learning generative model to directly estimate 3D morphology from 2D images.Numerical and experimental validation on in-situ and ex-situ images reveals that the stochastic geometric approach offers better accuracy, while deep learning proves more suitable for industrial contexts due to its speed and ease of implementation. Potential improvements are identified regarding experimental data quality and model optimization. This thesis opens new perspectives for the 3D morphological characterization of aggregate populations through 2D image analysis, proposing methods applicable to industrial conditions. Its results can benefit many processes where morphological control is crucial

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

This thesis aims at developing a new approach for geometric modeling of two-phase flows, from 2D images of orthogonal projections, with the objective of extracting 3D morphological characteristics of the particles. The study mainly addresses the case of droplets and bubbles of spherical and ellipsoidal shape. Among the existing methods to deal with 2D images resulting from the projection of a 3D particles system, the pattern recognition and segmentation ones are the most common. However, they present major limitations. To overcome these problems, a 3D stochastic geometrical model (a marked point process) is proposed. The model was fitted to the observed data thanks to a numerical optimization process. The method’s performance was evaluated on numerical simulations of 2D images resulting from projections of spherical and ellipsoidal particles of known geometry. The accuracy of the model to retrieve the 3D size and shape distribution of the particles was highlighted, even from high density images. Experimental validation was also performed based on fully characterized suspensions of PMMA balls, of different sizes. Finally, in order to characterize typical systems encountered in multiphase flow processes, the proposed approach was applied to a bubbly flow with different gas flow rates (i.e. for several sizes and densities of bubbles). This PhD work illustrates the relevance of stochastic geometrical modeling for the characterization of two-phase flows. It opens up wide perspectives, as e.g. the implementation of more flexible models to better describe the possible interactions (attractions/repulsions) between particles

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Quantitative identification of physical characteristics of solid interfaces correlated with the tribological properties

    No full text
This thesis aims to better understand the friction in non-lubricated contacts (dry friction). Until now it was possible to build scenarios about the history of the contact, we propose here to support them with quantifiers related to the morphology of the interface, called third body. For this purpose, we will try to link the morphological characteristics to rheological data such as the coefficient of friction (COF). To do this, we must proceed in four steps: tribological experiments, post-mortem analysis, image processing and analysis and finally research of morpho-tribo correlations. The experimentation is carried out on a disk-pion tribometer allowing the acquisition of the COF, for several test conditions. The post-mortem analyses consist of the analysis of the experimental data and the acquisition of images of the interface using a scanning electron microscope. The images are then divided into 2 categories, the particle images which will undergo a segmentation and the texture images on which the co-occurrence matrices will be calculated. It is then possible to extract features from these 2 categories, metrics related to the size and shape of the segmented particles and second order statistical metrics from the co-occurrence matrices. All these data are used to characterize the third body, so we will try to link them to the measured COF. For this purpose, a machine learning algorithm of the random forest (RF) type is implemented. The RF will allow us to make predictions of the COF from the characteristics of the interface, and will also allow us to determine which are the relevant characteristics leading to this prediction. It will then be possible to prune the list of features to keep only those most representative of the friction
