Basking behaviour in two sympatric herbivorous lizards (Liolaemidae: Phymaturus) from the Payunia volcanic region of Argentina
We studied several aspects of the thermal biology of two coexisting saxicolous species of the genus Phymaturus (Liolaemidae) at the Payunia, a volcanic region in Argentina where harsh conditions prevail. We marked individuals in grids and we assessed the environmental conditions when the individuals showed their maximum activity (i.e. when more than 50% of marked individuals were active), the time spent basking, and the postural behaviour in relation to different cloudiness conditions. We found that temperatures recorded when the species exhibit their peaks of activity was higher for , the smaller species, during summer at one of the three studied sites. exhibited the longest basking periods, but during these longer periods cloudy conditions prevailed. Both species adopted a head-up posture when conditions were sunny and a head-down posture when under cloudy conditions. Evaluación de la selección de microhábitat por Calomys musculinus (Rodentia: Cricetidae) en el oeste de Argentina usando polvos luminosos
El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el uso de microhabitat de Calomys musculinus en la Reserva de Biosfera Ñacuñán (Mendoza) utilizando la técnica de polvos fluorescentes. La especie es bastante generalista en el uso de los tipos de ambientes presentes, pero parece preferir algunos substratos específicos a nivel de microhabitat. Además, algunos animales utilizaron ramas y arbustos hasta medio metro de alto.The aim of this study was to use fluorescent powder tracking techniques tostudy the use of space and the patterns of microhabitat selection in Calomys musculinusat the Ñacuñán Biosphere Reserve. The examination of over 3000 microhabitat recordsfrom the trails of eight individuals indicates that, in general, the species does not discriminateamong major habitat types; however, we found significant differences in the specificcategories of substrate used by the species within habitat. Spatial and temporal patterns in the aquatic insect community of a high altitude Andean stream (Mendoza, Argentina)
Benthic invertebrate communities have been poorly studied in Andean streams apart from the Patagonian region. The primary objective of this work was to analyse the faunal composition at three different altitudes and to observe whether there were differences in aquatic insect community structure at spatial and temporal scales. Physicochemical variables were measured on a monthly basis. Sixteen families were found, the most frequent and abundant taxa being Massartellopsis (Ephemeroptera), Andesiops (Ephemeroptera), Metrichia neotropicalis (Trichoptera), Cailloma lucidula (Trichoptera), Austrelmis (Coleoptera), and the Chironomidae (Diptera). There was a change in benthic composition associated with land use and with the diminution of water quality from the headwaters to the mouth of the system. The middle reach was a transitional area where headwater species coexisted with species characteristic of the lower reach, with Austrelmis and the family Chironomidae being the most abundant elements.Fil: Scheibler, Erica Elizabeth. Resource segregation in two herbivorous species of mountain lizards from Argentina
Lizard assemblages may experience resource partitioning in the spatial, trophic or temporal dimensions of their niche. Niche segregation does not always imply competition, and the role of interspecific competition is better understood when the response of species to the presence or absence of other species is evaluated. The aim of this study is to determine daily activity patterns and food consumption in two phylogenetically related species (Phymaturus roigorum and P. payuniae). These saxicolous and herbivorous species live in sympatry in the volcanic region of Payunia, in central-west Argentina. One of these species can also be found in allopatry, allowing comparative studies on their lifestyle. We evaluated the temporal daily patterns of both species and their diet overlap. Although competition is not evident between the species studied here, it is shown that selectivity towards different plant species and the time schedule of foraging are the primary mechanisms that promote the coexistence of these lizards. Current status of the Pehuenche’ frog Alsodes pehuenche Cei 1976 (Anura, Alsodidae) in Argentina: chronicle of an announced death
La ranita del Pehuenche, Alsodes pehuenche, es una especie que habita arroyos de montaña en los Andes centrales de Argentina y Chile. En 2010 se publicó un estado de situación de la especie, describiendo las amenazas que enfrenta, lo que llevó a considerarla en las máximas categorías de amenaza, tanto en la Argentina como a nivel internacional (IUCN). A pesar de los esfuerzos, las medidas de mitigación planteadas no han sido tomadas totalmente en cuenta y las amenazas que se percibían como potenciales ahora están afectando a las poblaciones.En esta contribución reunimos toda la información disponible publicada e inédita sobre la biología de la especie y reflexionamos acerca de la efectividad en la forma de encarar las acciones de conservación.The Pehuenche’ frog, Alsodes pehuenche, inhabits mountain streams in the central Andes of Argentina and Chile. In 2010, a situation status was reported, describing the threats, which led to it being considered in the highest threat categories at the national and international level. Despite the efforts, the proposed mitigation measures have not been taken into account and the threats that were perceived as potential are now affecting the populations, especially those close to Paso Pehuenche (Mendoza, Argentina). Managed honeybee hives and the diversity of wild bees in a dryland nature reserve
Honeybee hives may influence pollen and nectar availability in natural ecosystems, which may consequently affect wild pollinators. We studied the effects of managed honeybee hives on wild bee diversity in Villavicencio Nature Reserve (Mendoza, Argentina). We placed pan traps at increasing distances from honeybee hives to estimate wild bee abundance, richness, and composition. Wild bee abundance did not change detectably with distance to honeybee hives, although the abundance of the most common species, Arhysosage bifasciata, increased with increasing distance to the hives. Wild bee richness increased weakly with increasing distance to hives. Although wild bee composition did not change significantly with distance to the apiaries for the full data set, it changed significantly when we excluded A. bifasciata from the analyses. We found no relationship between body size and distance to the apiaries. Overall, our results indicate that managed honeybee hives had mixed effects on the wild bee assemblage in our study area. Given the relatively low hive density used in our study compared to other studies, we recommend an adaptive management strategy with continuous impact assessment.EEA JunínFil: Leguizamón, Yamila.
