ArchitectureThe Image of Research 2009SubmissionIn an assignment dubbed “Failed Successfully,” students studying abroad in Barcelona, Spain were asked by Architecture professor Alex Lehnerer to transplant certain aspects of the Catalonian city into the Midwestern city of Chicago. Focusing on the infrastructure of each city, the collaborative group brainstormed the transplanting of Barcelona’s underground Metro system into the earth of Chicago, effectively eliminating the “L.” The image of the Office of Metropolitan Architects’ (OMA) McCormick Tribune Campus Center has become a symbol of Chicago in that it reinforces its identity by means of highlighting its iconic infrastructural system.
The absence of the “L” is then hypothesized and its effects (both positive and negative) are considered. The absence of the elevated train network entering OMA’s building is supposed to be provocative in terms of the immediate loss of Chicago’s identity. Though aspects of economics and demographics are also considered, the image mainly focuses on the issue of identification and how the city of Chicago is the “L” and the “L” is the city of Chicago; without it, Chicago does not exist as it does today

Nycteris javanica
6. Javan Slit-faced Bat Nycteris javanica French: Nyctere de Java / German: Java-Schlitznase / Spanish: Nicterio de Java Other common names: Javan Hollow-faced Bat Taxonomy. Nycteris javanicus [sic] E. Geof-froy Saint-Hilaire, 1813, “Habite Java.” Nyctenis javanica belongs to the javanica group. Monotypic. Distribution. Known only from Java, Kangean Is, and Nusa Penida I. Also mentioned in West Timor, but these records are very doubtful. Descriptive notes. Forearm 43-50 mm, no other specific measurements available. The Javan Slit-faced Bat is small, with short rounded wings. Longitudinal cleft runs along top of muzzle, covering noseleaves. Fur is long and fluffy, pale reddish brown to grayish brown dorsally, and slightly lighter ventrally. Ears are very long. Wing membranes are dark brown. There are no obvious sexual differences in pelage. Habitat. Tropical lowland forest. Food and Feeding. No information. Breeding. No information. Activity patterns. No information. Movements, Home range and Social organization. No information. Status and Conservation. Classified as Vulnerable on The IUCN Red List. Small global distribution of the Javan Slitfaced Bat and its dependence on lowland rainforest make it of particular conservation concern. It is currently the most threatened species of Nycteridae. Co-Ingestion of Whey Protein with a Carbohydrate-Rich Breakfast Does Not Affect Glycaemia, Insulinaemia or Subjective Appetite Following a Subsequent Meal in Healthy Males
We aimed to assess postprandial metabolic and appetite responses to a mixed-macronutrient lunch following prior addition of whey protein to a carbohydrate-rich breakfast. Ten healthy males (age: 24 ± 1 y; body mass index (BMI): 24.5 ± 0.7 kg/m2) completed three trials in a non-isocaloric, crossover design. A carbohydrate-rich breakfast (93 g carbohydrate; 1799 kJ) was consumed with (CHO+WP) or without (CHO) 20 g whey protein isolate (373 kJ), or breakfast was omitted (NB). At 180 minutes, participants consumed a mixed-macronutrient lunch meal. Venous blood was sampled at 15 minute intervals following each meal and every 30 minutes thereafter, while subjective appetite sensations were collected every 30 minutes throughout. Post-breakfast insulinaemia was greater after CHO+WP (time-averaged area under the curve (AUC0-180 min): 193.1 ± 26.3 pmol/L), compared to CHO (154.7 ± 18.5 pmol/L) and NB (46.1 ± 8.0 pmol/L; p 0.05). Adding whey protein to a carbohydrate-rich breakfast enhanced the acute postprandial insulin response, without influencing metabolic or appetite responses following a subsequent mixed-macronutrient meal
