Talking about Bordering
In the summer of 2019 as the UK was in the midst of heated Brexit debates and Theresa May’s minority government clung on to power, Professor Louise Ryan interviewed Professor Nira Yuval-Davis about her recent book Bordering (Yuval-Davis, Wemyss and Cassidy 2019). Although things have changed in some significant ways since that interview, for example Boris Johnson has now replaced Theresa May as Prime Minister, and won a landslide election victory in December, 2019, and the controversial Brexit Bill was passed by the British Parliament, many of the issues about borders and bordering remain extremely relevant today. The current pandemic has not only revealed Britain’s dependence on migrant workers, especially in health and social care, but also exposed health inequalities among migrants and ethnic minorities. As the post-Brexit immigration landscape begins to emerge, the analysis of Nira Yuval Davis remains as pertinent as ever

Tick the box please: a reflexive approach to doing quantitative social research
Publication arose out of a quantitative study on the health of Irish migrants funded by the Department of Health and a qualitative follow up study funded by the ESRC (of which Ryan was a grant co-holder). Ryan was research fellow on both studies and lead author. Ryan was lead author on another publication based on the quantitative study published in British Journal of Psychiatry (2006)
John A. Ryan. To be a contemplative in action
Spirituality does not come only from books or sermons. It comes from encounters,Jesus met the people and told them stories. John A. Ryan rooted his passion for social and economic justice in the world, in encounter and finding God in all things. A passion that may have made Ryan the first author to combine economic ethics and Church teachings in a way that was uncommon in that period. The goal of this paper is to present Ryan s thought in our contemporary European context. At the same time, the author will to show how Theology and Social Sciences can walk together in order to clarify the complexity of social processes and incarnate the Kingdom of God in our contemporary world. The paper s author will to show that Ryan s legacy is still able to contribute something constructive to contemporary Church Culture. After introducing some brief notes to contextualize his life, this paper describes his main theoretical contributions through two of his most important works, A living Wage and Distributive Justice. Next, the author will show how Ryan tried to incarnate his theories in a social political program that walked hand in hand with President Roosevelt s own [New Deal / social development] programs. Third, the paper s author will suggest a few connections between Ryan s main contributions and some contemporary key concepts in Social Sciences and Catholic social teachings.
The implications of the City of Davis' urban growth boundary
The City of Davis, California has a very high median housing value when compared to its surrounding area and the statewide average. High housing values can make the area increasingly unaffordable. A key policy question is whether Davis' urban growth boundary adopted in 2000 has been a contributing factor to high housing prices. This thesis uses quantitative analysis from a range of California cities to assess the effect of Davis' urban growth boundary on median housing values. More specifically, this thesis draws on a panel data regression analysis using United States Census data from the 1990 Decennial Census, the 2000 Decennial Census, the 2010 Decennial Census and the 2010 American Communities Survey. A total of 56 California cities are studied. Supply side variables such as city land area, number of rooms, number of bedrooms and the age of the housing stock are considered in this analysis. Demand side variables include median household income, number of professional workers, number of people in poverty, number of high earning households, age, and percent of population married. The analysis determined that urban growth boundaries do contribute to increased median housing values over time. For each year the boundary is in effect, the median housing value is expected to increase by $5,811. Other factors also influence the median housing value. The City of Davis needs to consider the long-term impact of the urban growth boundary on its housing affordability during the debate on whether to allow new development

Recent developments in synthesizing biolubricants - a review
Biolubricants are bio-based compounds that represent a renewable and biodegradable alternative to petroleum-based lubricants. Although biolubricant applications appear promising, their commercial deployment is still limited. Research in the field of biolubricants is continuously developing to improve their properties as well as their production processes, with the aim of overcoming the current limitations and enhance large-scale application. This review paper aims at reviewing the most recent developments in the ever-evolving field of biolubricant synthesis, focusing on novel feedstocks and catalysts, as well as new chemical modification routes and additive components that aim at further improving their sustainability. Moreover, to bridge the gap between small-scale synthesis and industrial realization, techno-economic and life cycle studies aiming at assessing the feasibility of large-scale biolubricant production are also reviewed. Finally, some considerations and future prospects are discussed based on the key findings of the analysis, which revealed that, while considerable effort is being made to improve the properties and the sustainability of biolubricants, significant work has yet to be done in terms of design and optimization of an industrial-scale process

Diversity in thermal affinity among key piscivores buffersimpacts of ocean warming on predator–prey interactions
Asymmetries in responses to climate change have the potential to alter importantpredator–prey interactions, in part by altering the location and size of spatial refugiafor prey. We evaluated the effect of ocean warming on interactions between fourimportant piscivores and four of their prey in the U.S. Northeast Shelf by examiningspecies overlap under historical conditions (1968–2014) and with a doubling in CO2.Because both predator and prey shift their distributions in response to changingocean conditions, the net impact of warming or cooling on predator–prey interac-tions was not determined a priori from the range extent of either predator or preyalone. For Atlantic cod, an historically dominant piscivore in the region, we foundthat both historical and future warming led to a decline in the proportion of preyspecies’ range it occupied and caused a potential reduction in its ability to exerttop-down control on these prey. In contrast, the potential for overlap of spiny dog-fish with prey species was enhanced by warming, expanding their importance aspredators in this system. In sum, the decline in the ecological role for cod thatbegan with overfishing in this ecosystem will likely be exacerbated by warming, butthis loss may be counteracted by the rise in dominance of other piscivores withcontrasting thermal preferences. Functional diversity in thermal affinity within thepiscivore guild may therefore buffer against the impact of warming on marineecosystems, suggesting a novel mechanism by which diversity confers resilience.Peer reviewe
