David Stifter focusses his study on the loss of final -s-, a phenomenon which he has studied in previous studies. For the personal names with final -o in the second list, he suggests a dative singular (as in Latin) or an accusative singular, those with final -i being dative or accusative singular feminine. Forms in -us might be gamonyms, as in the Larzac tablet. Duti so adogarie is analysed as a verbal complex with infixation of a connecting particle (e)ti, and of a pronoun so, between the first preverb (du) and the other preverbs (ad-(u)o-), followed by a conjugated form with a reduced ending (= conjunct).David Stifter analyse plus particulièrement la chute de -s-, car il a déjà étudié ce phénomène de façon approfondie pour la langue gauloise. Anti-adhesion of thin polymer films as cells/biofilm repellent for biomedical devices

Surface with abilities for anti-adhesion of living tissue is vital for biomedical applications such as in sensors and medical implants. Cellular (MG-63 osteo-blast cells) anti-adhesion properties of plasma de- posited thin polymer films using CH 4 gas as a precursor were investigated. Thinner coatings reduce the risk of swelling or delamination in wet environment considerably. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and contact angle measurements were used to provide molecular and surface energy information, respec- tively, to assist in forming properties-structure relationships. SEM was used to provide information re- garding surface topography and morphology. All plasma deposited surfaces showed an increase in con- tact angle measurements while SEM images showed a visible thin coating that masked the surface fea- tures, and chemistry, of PEEK. The osteoblast cells responded to all surface attributes. Chemistry wise, the percentage of living cells on the plasma treated PEEK substrates reduced with the reduction of relative oxygen concentration on the surface especially with C-O functional groups. Hence the relative concen- tration of C-functional groups could be used as a controlled variable to regulate anti adhesion properties for medical devices. Cells also showed a clear positive trend with the sp3/sp2 ratio. Positive trends were noticed between cells spreading and proliferation and C-O functional group and the increase of contact angle measurements

Automatic morphological analysis and interlinking of historical Irish cognate verb forms

The main aim of the author’s research project is to use computational approaches to gain more insight into the historical development of Irish verbs. One of the objectives is to investigate how a link between the electronic Dictionary of the Irish language (eDIL),1 covering the period c. 700–c. 1700, but focussing on Early Irish (7th–12th centuries), and the nascent Foclóir Stairiúil na Gaeilge ‘The Historical Dictionary of Irish’, 2 covering the period 1600–2000, could be implemented. Such a link will be hugely beneficial for scholars operating at the intersection of the medieval and modern period (see Table 1), who currently lack a comprehensive lexical resource for the “intermediate” early modern period. This paper stems from research carried out during a Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship (GOIPG/2017/1808) funded by the Irish Research Council. The author would also like to acknowledge the anonymous reviewer for helpful feedback and the editors for seeing this publication through.Peer reviewe

On the Celtic inscription of Briona.

I make some suggestions about the lapidary inscription written in the ‘Lepontic’ alphabet, found in San Bernardino di Briona in the 19th century and now preserved in the Lapidary Museum of the rectory of the Cathedral of Novara. The aim is to show just how much the traditional interpretation needs revision. This follows the re-assignment the stone of what must have been its original vertical position, with the short side placed into the ground, the ‘wheels’ arranged horizontally and ten of eleven lines of writing to be read from top to bottom. I wish to highlight some prag matic and linguistic difficulties in the traditional interpretation, while, on the other hand, I would like to show how the ‘verti cal approach’ has some advantages for the interpretation. The reassessment also leads to reflections on the relationship of the direction of writing with the sequence of reading of the vertical lines

    Old Irish lobur ‘weak, sick’

Old Irish lobur‘weak, sick; leprous’ is cognate with Welshl lwfr‘cowardly, timid, faint-hearted; mean; idle’, Cornish lover, Middle Breton loffr, Modern Breton lovr‘weak, miserly, leprous’. The common notion linking these words semantically is ‘weak’. Because of the voca lism of the Welsh word, the Proto-Celtic reconstruction *lobro-, proposed in earlier scholarship (VGKSi 116‒17,Deshayes 2003: 477), is excluded: Proto-Celtic (PC) *oappears asoin all British-Celtic languages (SchRijveR 1995: 26), except for certain nasal contexts and before *RC‒ neither of which is applicable here ‒, where it is raised touin Welsh (SchRijveR 1995: 27‒44, 52–68); PC *u, on the other hand, is retain edasu in Welsh, but yields oin Cornish and Breton (SchRijveR 1995: 26‒7),precisely the distribution found in this etymon. Theoof OIr.loburis due to the regular lowering of PC *u>o before a non-high back vowel (McCone 1996: 110). The voiced labial fricative evidenced in the individual languages can continue Proto-Celtic *bor *φ. The former is the reflex of Indo-European *bh, *gu̯and the marginal sound *b(McCone 1996: 42‒3; Stifter 2017: 1189‒90), whereas the latter continues word-internal Indo-Euro pean *p before a liquid (McCone1996: 44; Stifter 2017: 1190

Name of the author: Jiří Smetana Name of the MA thesis: Utopia in the Works of Adalbert Stifter University: Charles University in Prague Faculty: Faculty of Arts Department: Institute of the Germanic Studies Supervisor: Doc. PhDr. Milan Tvrdík, CSc. Place and date of publishing: Prague, March 2011 The subject of the present work is Adalbert Stifter's utopia. The aim is to outline its main essence and in part describe the motives that had led Stifter to his utopia. The work describes the artistic, political and social background of the Biedermeier era and approximates Stifter as its principal representative in Austrian literature. Adalbert Stifter's talent was versatile; he had affection for nature and art. Art was one of his most faithful friends. Stifter's Biedermeier literary works are original and in a certain sense possess great depth. For every opinion in these works is put down rationally. In this regard we would be hard pressed to find selfcontent in Stifter's late work. This opinion is also shared by the Austrian writer Peter Rosegger, who regards Adalbert Stifter higher than Johann Wolfgang Goethe for this very reason. As Rosegger rightly states, Stifter's style is also very original.1 This work takes note of the utopian features in some of Stifter's short stories and in his educational..
