Remembering BC\u27s 1983 Solidarity Uprising — with David Spaner
Bio: David Spaner has worked as a feature writer, movie critic, reporter, and editor for numerous newspapers and magazines. David\u27s also been a cultural/political organizer (Yippie, manager of the punk band The Subhumans). He is the author of Dreaming in the Rain and Shoot It! Hollywood, Inc. and the Rising of Independent Film.In 2021, Spaner published a behind-the-scenes book about the Solidarity resistance movement, Solidarity: Canada\u27s Unknown Revolution of 1983 (Ronsdale 2021) documenting the event using intimate storytelling and melding cultural and rebel politics to provide insight into the conflicts that are still with us. It was the largest political protest in the province\u27s history and threatened to end in an all-out general strike. Oral History Interview: Joan Hall and David Simon (788)
Abstract: In this oral history, Robert Lange interviews Joan Hall of the Dictionary of American Regional English (DARE), a long-term research project recording the regionalisms of American dialect that was begun by well-known UW English professor Frederic Cassidy in the early 1960s. Hall succeeded Cassidy as chief editor of the project and saw the dictionary to completion in 2013. Hall discusses her own educational background and introduction to DARE as well as the internal structure of the project throughout its decades-long history, including its many funding challenges and technological advancements. In the second half of the interview, Hall is joined by David Simon, who served as DARE?s development officer during the late 1990s through the early 2000s. Hall and Simon detail the myriad of fundraising issues that the project faced and how DARE overcame them.

Prophet Against Slavery: The Story of Benjamin Lay — with David Lester
Bio: David Lester is a musician, graphic designer and graphic novelist. His most recent book is Prophet Against Slavery: Benjamin Lay, A Graphic Novel (Beacon Press) created with Marcus Rediker and Paul Buhle. He also illustrated "1919: A Graphic History of the Winnipeg General Strike", (published in English, German and French editions). 1919 was co-winner of the 2020 CAWLS Book Prize. Lester\u27s poster of anti-war protester Malachi Ritscher was exhibited at The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. He is the guitarist in the rock duo Mecca Normal, cited as an influence on the founders of the feminist social movement Riot Grrrl. Ethical Living in the Anthropocene — with David Chang
Author and educator David Chang of SFU\u27s Faculty of Education joins Am Johal for a conversation about what it means to live an ethical life during the Anthropocene — an epoch marked by the monumental environmental impact of human activity. David is co-editor of a recently published collection of scholarly and creative essays, A Book of Ecological Virtues: Living Well in the Anthropocene.He and Am discuss themes in Ecological Virtues, including Aristotle\u27s notions of virtue ethics, and the grounding of virtue ethics in other thought traditions.
