Varieties of Divergence: A Response to Saunders and Wallace
I continue to maintain that David Lewis’s concept of overlapping persons cannot yield pre-measurement uncertainty in the Everett interpretation of quantum mechanics in the way that Simon Saunders and David Wallace originally seemed to suggest. However, I argue that in their reply to me they make it clear that they do not wish to invoke overlap of persons after all. That makes it mysterious why they defended their interpretation of personal overlap in the first place and questionable what role overlap has to play in their proposal. If Everettian branching can be understood to involve the divergence of distinct, non-overlapping worlds a concept of pre-measurement uncertainty is available. That idea was first proposed by David Deutsch but required an ad hoc postulate. Saunders has recently suggested that a similar scheme arises naturally out of the physics. If correct, that is important as it offers escape from some bizarre consequences of current alternative ways of understanding probability in the Everett interpretatio
Saunders Theatre Program collection, 1914-1964
This collection contains programs and newsclipping reviews of various theatrical performances appearing in Little Rock between 1914-1962. Programs include plays, minstrel shows, movies, vaudeville shows, operas, musicals, recitals, concerts, follies, revues, local amateur shows, lectures, ballets, magic shows, readings, etc. These shows were performed by both local groups and traveling troupes. Theatres include the Kempner, Little Rock High School, and Robinson Auditorium. The newsclipping reviews are from the Arkansas Gazette, Arkansas Democrat, and the Memphis Commercial Appeal (traveling troupe usually played in Memphis before coming to Little Rock). Also included are two notebooks by Saunders: 1) List of performances at the Kempner and Robinson Auditorium, 1917-1958, and (2) personal reviews of performances, 1926-1933. There are programs (i.e., New York, Chicago, St. Louis, etc.) from performances Saunders attended in other cities. The collection also contains two scrapbooks, c. 1900-1913 covering early moving pictures and movie stars, and theatrical performances in St. Louis, Missouri. The scrapbooks were started by Mattie Dicks, mother-in-law of Earl Saunders. They were continued by Margarite Dicks Saunders while her family lived in St. Louis before moving to Little Rock.UALR.0104 A-107

The scrapbooks were started by Mattie Dicks, mother-in-law of Earl Saunders. They were continued by Margarite Dicks Saunders while her family lived in St. Louis before moving to Little Rock. Born in Stuttgart, Arkansas October 20, 1892, Earl Saunders, Sr. was raised in Little Rock. Saunders married Margarite Dicks and they had one son, Earl Saunders, Jr. After working for Becks, a retail store, Saunders joined the S. M. Brooks Advertising firm. He became vice-president and stayed with the company 44 years until his death May 2, 1962. One of his responsibilities at S. M. Brooks Advertising was to prepare the programs for the theatrical performances appearing in Little Rock. Saunders served as President of the Young Business men's Association, Director of the 10th District Federation of America Advertising, and Director of the Salvation Army Board. His life-long infatuation with the circus and theatre is best characterized by his habit of watching the circus trains unload at 3:00 in the morning and his booking of four seats on the second row of every show which came to Little Rock. China’s Expanding Nuclear Capabilities: A Conversation with David Logan and Phil Saunders
Dr. Phil Saunders, in the Institute for National Strategic Studies (INSS) Center for the Study of Chinese Military Affairs, and David Logan join this episode of the ChinaPower podcast. They recently co-authored a new report titled Discerning the Drivers of China’s Nuclear Force Development: Models, Indicators, and Data. They lay out the six models developed in the report and explain which models are the most compelling for explaining China’s behavior. Dr. Logan dives into the expansion in size, structure, and capabilities of China’s nuclear stockpile in the last 10 years but highlights the fact that there has been no official announcement on China’s reasoning for this build-up. In the context of this expansion, Dr. Saunders points out that China is showing signs that its nuclear strategy could be shifting, and he notes that the prospects of strategic arms control have become more complicated.https://digitalcommons.ndu.edu/podcasts/1003/thumbnail.jp
Boomtown
This creative work was commissioned by the Queensland Music Festival (artistic director: James Morrison) as the signature regional event for the 2013 festival. With book by David Burton and music by Scott Saunders, this original music theatre piece was creatively developed and directed by Sean Mee under the overall control of creative Producer, Marguerite Pepper. The production was created using the stories of Gladstone and performed by over 300 local artists, school children and industry partners on the foreshore of the Gladstone Marina on a purpose built stage, designed by Josh McIntosh. The production played over 4 nights (18-21 July 2013) to an estimated audience of just under 20,000
Saunders and Wallace on Everett and Lewis
Simon Saunders and David Wallace are attempting to use a modified form of David Lewis's analysis of personal fission to support the thought that prior to undergoing Everett branching an informed subject can be uncertain about which outcome s/he will observe. I argue that the seductive appeal of the idea is an illusion arising out of failure to distinguish between the provenance and reference of the relevant observers’ utterances
