    Verloes-David-Pfeiffer mesomelia-synostoses syndrome is an autosomal-dominant form of mesomelic dysplasia comprising typical acral synostoses combined with ptosis, hypertelorism, palatal abnormality, CHD, and ureteral anomalies. Since the original reports in 1995, two other patients have been described with this syndrome, one of them the patient reported in 1998 by Day-Salvatore. In this article, we report on the follow-up of some of the original cases and review the literature. We confirm that the Verloes-David-Pfeiffer syndrome (VDPS) is a progressive skeletal disorder that despite repeated corrective surgical intervention leads to severe limb deformities. No mutations were detected in the FLNB gene. To date, the cause and the pathogenesis of VDPS remain unknown. The latter is characterized in this study as a syndromic type of skeletal dysplasia because besides congenital malformations and multiple acromelic synostoses arising prenatally, VDPS manifests in postnatal life as a severe osteochondrodysplasia

    Pyrexia After Transcranial Surgery for Pfeiffer Syndrome

    BackgroundPreviously, we have reported the pattern of temperature increase after transcranial surgery for nonsyndromic craniosynostosis. It was found that pyrexia had a bimodal distribution during the first 48 hours after surgery.AimThe aims of this study were to evaluate pyrexia after transcranial surgery for syndromic craniosynostosis (Pfeiffer syndrome), to investigate whether the same pattern occurred, and to evaluate the correlation between pyrexia and possible factors, that is, sex, age, procedure, length of surgery, and incidence of postoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage.MethodTwenty-one sequential case notes of Pfeiffer syndrome were retrospectively reviewed to collect 38 postoperative temperature courses. The mean change of temperature was plotted on a graph with a trend line to find the feature of the course.ResultsPyrexia after transcranial surgery for Pfeiffer syndrome had a bimodal distribution during the first 48 hours, similar to the pyrexia after transcranial surgery for nonsyndromic craniosynostosis. This pyrexia was higher and more prolonged in those undergoing a longer surgical procedure and frontofacial advancement and procedures accompanied with postoperative CSF leakage. Moreover, the temperature course was more complex in procedures accompanied with postoperative CSF leakage.ConclusionsIt was concluded that in Pfeiffer syndrome, which has more complicated pathologic status than nonsyndromic craniosynostosis, also had bimodal postoperative temperature course. Although the etiology of the bimodal pyrexia remains unclear, it seems that it is part of the normal postoperative course in these cases. JVRB - Journal of Virtual Reality and Broadcasting. 2008;5(16):1660.Tracking user's visual attention is a fundamental aspect in novel human-computer interaction paradigms found in Virtual Reality. For example, multimodal interfaces or dialogue-based communications with virtual and real agents greatly benefit from the analysis of the user's visual attention as a vital source for deictic references or turn-taking signals. Current approaches to determine visual attention rely primarily on monocular eye trackers. Hence they are restricted to the interpretation of two-dimensional fixations relative to a defined area of projection. The study presented in this article compares precision, accuracy and application performance of two binocular eye tracking devices. Two algorithms are compared which derive depth information as required for visual attention-based 3D interfaces. This information is further applied to an improved VR selection task in which a binocular eye tracker and an adaptive neural network algorithm is used during the disambiguation of partly occluded objects

    Managing Technology Risks Through Technological Proficiency: Guidance for Local Governments

    Like most organizations, local governments face challenges managing technology, the critical resource to meet evolving public service expectations. But benefits associated with adapting the latest technology come with risks, some more apparent than others. This report details the problems facing municipal officials as they try to maximize the benefits of technology for their communities and constituents in the face of cybersecurity, legal, operational, financial, reputational and societal risks. The report concludes that top municipal officials must create and maintain an environment of “technological proficiency.” That includes creating a process for making technology decisions, developing an annually reviewed technology plan that is tied to the budget, instituting a “cyber hygiene” training program for all employees in proper computer security practices, and making sure that agency technology is competently managed. The report is supplemented by a "Best Practices and Resources Guide" that organizations can use to achieve technology proficiency. It provides best practices based on an organization's technology profile.Report and Supplement were prepared for the Municipal Excess Liability Fund, a joint insurance fund of over 600 New Jersey local government agencies
