Code choice and code-switching in Swiss-German internet relay chat rooms
In the German-speaking regions of Switzerland, dialect is spoken by all social groups in most communicative situations, Standard German being used only when prescribed. Swiss dialects rarely appeared in written form before the 1980s, apart from the genre of dialect literature. Due to the growing acceptance of informal writing styles in many European languages, dialect is increasingly employed for written personal communication, in particular in computer-mediated communication (CMC). In Swiss Internet Relay Chat (IRC) rooms, varieties of German are used side by side as all chatters have a command of both standard and dialectal varieties. Depending on the channel, the proportion of dialectal contributions can be as high as 90 percent. The choice of a particular variety depends on both individual preference and on the predominant variety used within a specific thread. In this paper I take a quantitative approach to language variation in IRC and demonstrate how such an approach can help embed qualitative research on code-switching in CMC
Joint Symposium Proceeding: Perspective-Taking through Flash Fiction
4000000581This paper introduces results from an experimental one-semester class for undergraduate non-English majors in which flash fiction narratives were introduced to facilitate student ability to engage in perspective-taking from the orientation of other cultures. Employing an Intercultural Competence through Literature (ICL) approach, subjects were exposed to a series of short fictive narratives, and asked to engage in empathic, reflective exercises prior to and following readings. Narrative capacity to facilitate perspective-taking was assessed using the Scale of Ethnocultural Empathy (SEE), as well as a student questionnaire. Preliminary results suggest support for the use of short narrative fiction in promoting learner empathic engagement with literary protagonists from other cultures.departmental bulletin pape

elrm: Software Implementing Exact-Like Inference for Logistic Regression Models
Exact inference is based on the conditional distribution of the sufficient statistics for the parameters of interest given the observed values for the remaining sufficient statistics. Exact inference for logistic regression can be problematic when data sets are large and the support of the conditional distribution cannot be represented in memory. Additionally, these methods are not widely implemented except in commercial software packages such as LogXact and SAS. Therefore, we have developed elrm, software for R implementing (approximate) exact inference for binomial regression models from large data sets. We provide a description of the underlying statistical methods and illustrate the use of elrm with examples. We also evaluate elrm by comparing results with those obtained using other methods.
