Subordinate but equal : the intra-Trinitarian subordination of the Son to the Father in the theologies of P. T. Forsyth and Jürgen Moltmann
In the New Testament and in the early church fathers’ writings, the Son is understood to be ontologically equal to the Father and subordinate to him. Whether understood as ingenerate-generate, sender-sent, commanded-obedient, subordination shows the distinction between the Father and Son. As seen in church history, minimizing these distinctions can lead to modalism and pressing them too far leads to Arianism.
In the Bible, obedience or subordination does not mean ontologically inferior. Rather, obedience results from faith and love. Although some fathers connected obedience to Christ’s humanity, they were doing so while rejecting the Arian argument that the Son’s obedience meant he was ontologically inferior. They affirmed the voluntary obedience of the Son as an expression of his love for the Father and rejected any sense of coercion or determinism. The doctrine of the eternal generation of the Son from the Father’s ousia held together the equality and subordination of the Son to the Father.
Beginning with Christ’s atoning work rather than metaphysics, P. T. Forsyth and Jürgen Moltmann believe that the Son’s obedience is crucial for the atonement to be the free act of grace of the Sovereign God. Because of this, the Son’s obedience must be divine, and thus eternal. Otherwise, the obedience would be from Christ’s humanity, and humanity would contribute in inappropriate ways to the atonement. They also believe that subordination, obedience, humility, and servanthood complete the understanding of divine love. The unity provided by the same divine love is expressed according to the particularity of the Person. In the Trinitarian relationship, the Son’s eternal obedience is his free response to the Father. Here subordination is not oppression, but perfect love freely given to the perfect Lover.
This fuller conception of divine love that a proper emphasis on obedience affords has great potential to help Trinitarain theology contribute to the elimination of oppression and the improvement of human relationships and to do so in a manner consistent with the biblical witness
Mental illness and its treatment today
This paper discusses how the treatment of people with mental illness has been affected by the changes within health and welfare provision brought about by political change and austerity measures.
It is published by the Centre for Health and the Public Interest (CHPI) which has been set up by Colin Leys and his colleagues. Colin Leys is an emeritus professor of Public Health and an activist in protecting the NHS and the Public Sector. He is co-author of 'The Plot Against the NHS'
Dual Temperature and Strain Measurement with the Combined Fluorescence Lifetime and Bragg Wavelength Shift Approach in Doped Optical Fiber
We have constructed fiber-optic sensors to measure temperature and strain by combining the properties of fiber Bragg gratings with the fluorescent lifetimes of various doped fibers. Sensors have been made with the fiber Bragg grating written directly into the doped fiber to ensure the collocation of the strain and temperature measurement points. Results are compared with those obtained previously from a Bragg grating written into standard photosensitive fiber spliced to doped fiber. Standard deviation errors of 7 με and 0.8 °C have been obtained for strain and temperature ranges of up to 1860 με and 120 °C, respectively
Lignin-Derivative Ionic Liquids as Corrosion Inhibitors
Corrosion is a significant problem that negatively affects a wide range of structures and buildings, resulting in their premature failure, which causes safety hazards and significant economic loss. For this reason, various approaches have been developed to prevent or minimize the effects of corrosion, including corrosion inhibitors. Recently, biobased inhibitors have gained a certain interest thanks to their unique properties, eco-friendliness, and availability. Among all the green precursors, lignin is of particular interest, being a natural polymer that can be obtained from different sources including agricultural residues. Corrosion inhibitors based on ionic liquids (ILs) also present interesting advantages, such as low volatility and high tunability. If combined, it may be possible to obtain new lignin-based ILs that present interesting corrosion inhibitor properties. In this work, the inhibition properties of new biobased lignin ILs and the influence of anions and cations on the corrosion of mild steel in an aqueous solution of 0.01 M NaCl were investigated by Potentiostatic Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (PEIS) and Cyclic Potentiodynamic Polarization (CPP). Moreover, the surface was characterized using SEM, EDS, and optical profilometry. The IL choline syringate showed promising performance, reducing the corrosion current after 24 h immersion in 0.01 M sodium chloride, from 1.66 µA/cm2 for the control to 0.066 µA/cm2 with 10 mM of the IL present. In addition to its performance as a corrosion inhibitor, both components of this IL also meet or exceed the current additional desired properties of such compounds, being readily available, and well tolerated in organisms and the environment
Prelude to an analysis of A Disquisition on Government / George A. Forsyth
This thesis criticizes the traditional understanding of the doctrine of the concurrent majority. That tradition holds the doctrine is designed to protect the rights of the minority. To refute this interpretation, the author examines the introductory and middle sections of A Disquisition on Government, and the "Speech on the Slavery Question" (4 March 1850). It is argued the significant variable in Calhoun's political theory is not rights but, society. Calhoun is found to be engaged in the construction of a true science of politics, founded on strict empirical method.Political Science, Department o
