John Gould Fletcher letter to David Durst, November 21, 1948
In this letter from John Gould Fletcher to David Durst, Fletcher discusses the his prospective appointment at the University of Arkansas.Pulitzer Prize winning writer and Arkansan John Gould Fletcher had multiple connections with the University of Arkansas. Given his interest in art, it is no surprise that this included a relationship with Art Department Chair David Durst.[Page 1]

Little Rock,
Arkansas,
November 21, 1948.
Dear David Durst,
Dean Nichols has now written me offering me
an appointment in your department, as well as in Howard
Carters' English department, for the Spring semester. I
have accepted - which means, I take it, that I am
to be on the Campus from the last day of January onward.
Dean Nichols wants me to get in touch with you and Carter
and workout more fully the details of what I am expected
to do. I take it from his letter that I am not to teach
any regular course, at all. For this relief, much thanks-
as Shakespeare says. I believe I can do more for
your students (as well as Carter's) by not teaching
any regular course - since I am to belong to both
departments - but by allotting my time and effort
to making the general level of culture around
Fayetteville something more vital and lasting.
[Page 2]
For this purpose, I favor Carter's plan (as Nichols
has outlined it to me) of holding office hours to
discuss writing with students, and reading and criticizing
manuscripts ( I could also give them informal opinions on their
paintings); give a series of public lectures on
Modern American literature and the Arts in America (about
once a week - alternating from literature to art - would
be sufficient, if the general public is to be admitted),
visit classes, and advise on purchases (in the literary
field of poetry) for the Library.
I could not give the all-out comprehensive course in
Modern American Painting I gave at Mills College (over
the protests of one of the faculty who argued that I had
no knowledge of American art at all) in your department,
and offer less than that to Carter. For this reason, I humbly request
that you and Carter get together over Thanksgiving and
thrash out the matter between yourselves. I want to please

you both - and give to one what I give to another.
This will mean my scheming out of an altogether
new set of talks - at quite short notice. But
I believe this will be more in accordance with the
terms set by Dean Nichols, as I understand them.
I am writing Carter today also. Louis Freund
and his wife passed through here, on their way back
to Eureka Springs, last Sunday. We had
a very good discussion. I think the articles by
me and Adrian Brewer, on the Arkansas Art Annual,
in today's paper "the Gazette" will stir up healthy discussion.
With all good wishes,
John Gould Fletche
