    Preliminary Study on Tall Building Coupling Using a Rigid Link

    In growing urban cities, there is an evident trend towards vertical expansion with skyscrapers competing to achieve the highest point in the skyline. With this growth, there is an increasing need for interconnected residential and commercial buildings using skybridges to provide more effective movement between the structures. However, this raises questions on how these skybridges influence the structural response. Past studies demonstrated that such connections, if adequately designed, can be advantageous for controlling seismic and wind response. In this preliminary study, the seismic behavior of two skyscrapers is studied considering a rigid link representing the skybridge to understand variations of the base shear between the connected and individual buildings and the impact on story shear. The two buildings are designed to represent typical commercial and residential designs with concrete shear wall cores. This work is carried out through the use of dynamic analyses in SAP2000. The sensitivity of the skybridge placement is also discussed as this is an important factor in understanding how the dynamics of the structures can change with simple movements of the link throughout the building height. This work presents fundamental knowledge on how structural components cannot only enhance community mobility but also control and optimize structural performance

    When touched with a contact stimulus, 50% of adult Uloborus glomosus jumped from the web; 33% remained motionless; 13% moved to the edge of the web; and 4% shook the web. In a population of juveniles, 45% moved to the edge of the web; 27% jumped from the web; 24% shook the web; and 4% remained motionless. Adults with either stabilimenta or eggsac chains in their webs showed a tendency to shake their webs in the morning and move to the edge in the evening. Those without web structures jumped from their webs throughout the day. Juveniles with stabilimenta shook their webs in the afternoon; those without stabilimenta shook their webs in the evening. Adults aligned with web structures remained motionless when disturbed. Marked adults observed over the course of 4 weeks moved to the edge of the web or remained motionless when contacted in the mornings and jumped in the afternoons and evenings. During this time, the frequency of the jumping behavior increased. An adult U. glomosus jumped from its web in response to contact by a spider-hunting wasp. Other spiders tested with a contact stimulus and the combined visual and vibratory stimuli produced by a tethered wasp responded only to contact. Females tending their eggsac chains exhibited two types of defensive behaviors when either the parasitoid Arachnopteromalus dasys or spiderlings were placed on their eggsacs.     Semiometrics: producing a compositional view of influence

    High-impact academic papers are not necessarily the most cited. For example, Einstein's 'Special Relativity' paper from 1905 received (and continues to receive) fewer citations from other papers than his 'Brownian Motion" paper of the same year, despite the former radically changing the course of an entire scientific discipline to a much greater extent. Similarly, 'impact' metrics using citation count alone are, it is argued, not adequate for determining the scientific influence of papers, authors or small groups of authors. Although valid, they remain controversial when used to determine influence of larger groups or journals. While the term 'impact' has become closely linked to a journal's citation-based Journal Impact Factor score, this thesis uses the term 'influence' to describe the wider effectiveness of research, combining citation and metadata analysis to allow richer calculations to be performed over large-scale document networks. As a result, more qualitative influence ratings can be determined and a broader outlook on scientific disciplines can be produced. These ratings are best applied using an ontology-based data source, allowing more efficient inference than under a traditional RDBMS system, and allowing easier integration between heterogeneous data sources. These metrics, termed 'Semantic Bibliometrics' or 'Semiometrics', can be applied at a variety of levels of granularity, allowing a compositional framework for impact and influence analysis. This thesis describes the process of data preparation, systems architecture, metric value and data integration for such a system, introducing novel approaches at all four stages, thereby creating a working semiometrics system for determining influence at different semantic levels of granularity
