To Be an Actress
Between 1919 and 1961, pioneering Chinese American actress Anna May Wong established an enduring legacy that encompassed cinema, theater, radio, and American television. Born in Los Angeles and growing up amid the suspicion and scrutiny epitomized by the Chinese Exclusion Act, Wong—a defiant misfit—innovated nuanced performances to subvert the racism and sexism that beset her life and career. This critical study of her cross-media and transnational career marshals extraordinary archival research and takes a multifocal approach to illuminate a lifelong labor of performance. Viewing Wong as a performer and worker, not just a star, Yiman Wang adopts a feminist decolonial perspective to speculatively meet her subject as an interlocutor. In doing so, she invites a reconsideration of racialized, gendered, and migratory labor as the bedrock of the entertainment industries.

INTERVENING EFFECT OF FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CAPITAL STRUCTURE AND PERFORMANCE OF SMALL AND MEDIUM SCALE ENTERPRISES IN BENUE STATE, NIGERIA
The main objective of the study was to investigate the intervening effect of financial management on the relationship between capital structure and firm performance of small and medium scale enterprises (SME) in Benue state, Nigeria, focusing on twenty SME in Benue state registered with corporate affairs commission from 2019-2023 using ex-post facto research design. The variables used were short term- debt (STD) and long- term debt (LTD) for capital structure and return on assets (ROA) as proxy for firm performance. Regression analysis, using random effects model, as determined by hausman specification test was used for data analysis using STATA 20. Findings were that, there exists a positive and significant effect of short- term debt while there was a negative and insignificant relationship between long- term debt on return on assets. However, on intervening with financial management, the coefficients of margin of contributions of short- term debt and long- term debt on firm performance became significantly enhanced. Based on the results, the study recommended, among others that, firm owners and managers should ensure that the processes of sourcing for funds either for expansion or investment purposes of SME must submit completely to the relevant financial provisions. Government and regulatory agencies should put in place stringent laws to compel firms to embrace financial management principles and defaulting firms should be sanctioned appropriately
Deep learning applied in epilepsy: Bibliometric and visual analysis
Background Epilepsy is a prevalent chronic neurological disease with significant impacts. Traditional diagnostic methods and machine learning face challenges due to the complexity of electroencephalography (EEG). Deep learning (DL) shows potential in epilepsy management through EEG processing and brain imaging analysis. This study aims to fill the gap of missing bibliometric analysis in this field by conducting a visual bibliometric analysis of DL applications in epilepsy, revealing research trends, hotspots, and cutting-edge developments to guide future research directions. Methods In this study, a comprehensive search of original research articles and reviews, limited to English-language, published from 2006 to 2025, was conducted by the Web of Science Core Collection database. Bibliometric analyses and visualizations were conducted by CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Bibliometrix. Results This search retrieved 1266 papers related to DL applied in epilepsy from the Web of Science Core Collection database, showing a consistent upward trend. These papers were from 1957 organizations across 290 countries/regions, primarily from China and the United States. “Biomedical Signal Processing and Control” ranked as the journal with the most published papers. Acharya, U. Rajendra from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, was the most authoritative author. DL-based seizure detection, prediction, and epilepsy management are key research hotspots. Moreover, multimodal data integration approaches are gaining more attention. Conclusions This study innovatively employs bibliometric methods to visually analyze research on DL applications in epilepsy, which reveals a rising trend in research within the field and identifies key hotspots, such as DL in seizure detection and prediction. The potential of DL to enhance epilepsy management is highlighted, particularly in improving the accuracy of seizure detection and prediction, thereby enhancing patients’ quality of life. Furthermore, the findings highlight the importance of increasing seizure prediction accuracy, exploring multimodal data integration, and developing more interpretable DL models for future research

In The Celluloid Specimen, Benjamín Schultz‑Figueroa examines rarely seen behaviorist films of animal experiments from the 1930s and 1940s. These laboratory recordings—including Robert Yerkes’s work with North American primate colonies, Yale University’s rat‑based simulations of human society, and B. F. Skinner’s promotions for pigeon‑guided missiles—have long been considered passive records of scientific research. In Schultz‑Figueroa’s incisive analysis, however, they are revealed to be rich historical, political, and aesthetic texts that played a crucial role in American scientific and cultural history—and remain foundational to contemporary conceptions of species, race, identity, and society.

Protein deubiquitinase USP7 is required for osteogenic differentiation of human adipose-derived stem cells
Background: Human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs) are multipotent progenitor cells with self-renewal capabilities and multilineage differentiation potential, including osteogenesis. Although protein deubiquitinases have been linked to stem cell fate determination, whether protein deubiquitination contributes to lineage commitment during osteogenic differentiation of hASCs remains to be investigated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the ubiquitin specific protease 7 (USP7) on osteogenic differentiation of hASCs. Methods: An osteocalcin promoter driven luciferase reporter system was established to initially discover the potential association between USP7 and hASC osteogenesis. To further characterize the function of USP7 in osteogenic differentiation of hASCs, a combination of in vitro and in vivo experiments were carried out through genetic depletion or overexpression of USP7 using a lentiviral strategy. Moreover, HBX 41,108, a cyanoindenopyrazine-derived deubiquitinase inhibitor of USP7, was utilized at different doses to further examine whether USP7 regulated osteogenic differentiation of hASCs through its enzymatic activity. Results: We demonstrated that USP7 depletion was associated with remarkable downregulation of the reporter gene activity. Genetic depletion of USP7 by lentiviral RNAi markedly suppressed hASC osteogenesis both in vitro and in vivo, while overexpression of USP7 enhanced the osteogenic differentiation of hASCs. Notably, chemical blockade via the small molecular inhibitor HBX 41,108 could efficiently mimic the effects of USP7 genetic depletion in a dose-dependent manner. Estimating Causal Effects using a Multi-task Deep Ensemble
A number of methods have been proposed for causal effect estimation, yet few
have demonstrated efficacy in handling data with complex structures, such as
images. To fill this gap, we propose Causal Multi-task Deep Ensemble (CMDE), a
novel framework that learns both shared and group-specific information from the
study population. We provide proofs demonstrating equivalency of CDME to a
multi-task Gaussian process (GP) with a coregionalization kernel a priori.
Compared to multi-task GP, CMDE efficiently handles high-dimensional and
multi-modal covariates and provides pointwise uncertainty estimates of causal
effects. We evaluate our method across various types of datasets and tasks and
find that CMDE outperforms state-of-the-art methods on a majority of these

The X-linked deubiquitinase USP9X is an integral component of centrosome
The X-linked deubiquitinase USP9X has been implicated in multiple pathological disorders including malignancies and X-linked intellectual disability. However, its biological function and substrate repertoire remain to be investigated. In this study, we utilized the tandem mass tag labeling assay to identify USP9X-regulated proteins and revealed that the expression of multiple genes is altered in USP9X-deficient cells. Interestingly, we showed that USP9X promotes stabilization of centrosome proteins PCM1 and CEP55 through its catalytic activity. Remarkably, we demonstrated that USP9X is physically associated and spatially co-localized with PCM1 and CEP55 in the centrosome, and we revealed that either PCM1 or CEP55 loss resulted in impairment of USP9X centrosome localization. Moreover, we showed that USP9X is required for centrosome duplication, and this effect is dependent on its catalytic activity and its N-terminal module, which is responsible for physical association of USP9X with PCM1 and CEP55. Collectively, our experiments identified USP9X as an integral component of the centrosome where it functions to stabilize PCM1 and CEP55 and promote centrosome biogenesis.National Natural Science Foundation of China [81200763, 81670963]SCI(E)ARTICLE3112874-1288429
