Silence and Representation in Selected Postcolonial Texts
This thesis discusses female silence, voice and representation as portrayed in four postcolonial
novels written by Asian female writers or those from the Asian diaspora. The novels included in
the corpus are The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, Cereus Blooms at Night by Shani
Mootoo, Brick Lane by Monica Ali and Brixton Beach by Roma Tearne. This thesis aims to
explore the different strategies adopted by the authors to represent different forms of silence of
the type highlighted in theoretical work by Spivak, Olsen and Showalter. The novels analysed
open up new contexts in which issues of silence, migration, displacement and multiculturalism,
which are central in postcolonial literature, are explored. In its examination of these issues in
detail, the thesis has been influenced by postcolonial and diasporic studies, with a focus on
women’s issues and feminist thought. Instead of focusing on the role of silence solely in relation
to specific characters, the thesis attempts to engage with the complex ways in which these
narratives represent various forms, moments and scenes of silence. From the analysis, we can
exemplify that the novels can also be used to suggest the ambivalences of speaking/not-speaking
via the narrative representations of silence. Authorial silence involves the author’s deliberate
refusal to speak directly in the text ; instead, the author utilises several literary devices to convey
something indirectly to the reader. Silence is also linked to concepts such as shame, secrets and
gossip. One is likely to refrain from speaking if he or she is ashamed, secretive or is the topic of
gossip in one’s community. There are also some female characters who are portrayed as
not-speaking, or choosing to remain silent so as not to cause problems for the family. A few other
characters have been portrayed as refusing to speak out as they have been traumatised into silence.
Lastly, women can also be complicit in holding on to patriarchal structures and in the process,
attempt to speak out in order to to silence or to cause problems to other women
A Study of the Interactions among Zoroastrian, Jewish and Roman Legal Systems during the 7th and 8th Centuries CE Based on a Critical Edition of Īšō‛-boḵt’s Corpus Juris with Commentary and an English Translation
This project is a comprehensive study of a Syriac legal text of the late seventh century CE of the literary heritage of the Church of the East. The text is known as Īšō‘-boḵt Corpus Juris (ICJ) after its author. In this regard, this dissertation consists of two main parts: 1) a study of legal tradition in the Church of the East, 2) an edition and a translation of ICJ followed by a commentary. The first part is composed of two sections. It begins with a study of the legal tradition in the Church of the East from its advent in the late fifth century with figures such as Barṣauma, Mār Acacius and Mār Abā down to the end of the seventh century and Ḥenān-Išo‘ I, the last influential individual in the tradition prior to Īšō‘-boḵt. The main purpose of this study is to understand ICJ against the backdrop of the rich tradition to which it belongs. The second section of the first part is an analysis of ICJ itself. The study tries to locate the text at the intersection of the aforementioned legal traditions of Sasanian and post-Sasanian Zoroastrian, Jewish and Roman legal cultures. However, these legal cultures did not evenly distribute their traces on every section of ICJ. The Jewish and Roman influences are more recognizable in the first four chapters before they gradually fade out while parallels to the Zoroastrian legal system become numerous in the last two chapters. For the second part of this thesis, this study provides a critical edition of ICJ based on the Vatican manuscript and Abdišō‘ collection of laws with an English translation facing the edition. This edition and translation are accompanied by commentary discussing details of almost every passage of the text. The final part of the thesis is the appendices including translations of three Syriac texts and one Middle Persian text which are of crucial importance for understanding ICJ.Ph.D
The determinants of capital structure: evidence from selected Indonesian companies that have undergone debt restructuring
The capital structure is one of the reflections of companies that
undergo debt restructuring. This study aims to analyze the
determination for companies undergoing debt restructuring in
Indonesia. The independent variables used in this research are
profitability, growth opportunities, collateral, liquidity, and
earnings volatility, while the dependent variable is the capital
structure. This research used data obtained from 30 selected debt
restructuring events in Indonesian companies during the period
of 2003-2022. The research was statistically analyzed using the
multiple linear regression analysis methods, and the data
collected from Refinitiv database. In obtaining the analysis
results, the author used IBM SPSS Statistics version 25 to
process the data. The findings of this research indicate that
profitability, liquidity, and earnings volatility variables have a
significant impact on the amount of debt. The results differ for
growth opportunities and collaterals, which show no significant
influence on the decision to debt restructuring. These findings
support the pecking order theory, where companies that
restructure debt tend to use internal fund and debt to finance
operations rather than using equity. The findings of this research
will also help in understanding the determinants of debt
restructuring decisions

Pride and a Paycheck is a free publication for tradeswomen and women who are thinking about entering blue collar trades. Started by Madeline Mixer in 1999, Pride and a Paycheck was initially funded through the San Francisco Foundation from funds created to support tradeswomen projects. Pride and a Paycheck includes photographs, stories, and poetry by tradeswomen themselves as well as tips from advocates who have been working to recruit women into careers. Aleph
2013 Summer. The manuscript begins with poems sifted from the language of the Dead Sea Scrolls--poems pre-written, gathered into new song. The "speaker" (collective anonymity, a sect) seems to speak from the ruins of the scriptorium, from the archaeological site, from the caves, from the jars within the caves. The physicality of the scrolls, their furled and unfurled form, their being hidden, the remainder that is read out of the absence from which it came, finds parallel meaning in the Kabbalistic notion of the simultaneously revealed and concealed Godhead, or Thou, the addressed. These poems (siftings) are the roots, and the pages that make up the second half of the manuscript are grown from them, rooted in pre-written song--words are imagined as artifacts, ostraca, signatures with roots in the hereafter
