Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Electrical transport properties of carbon nanotube filled with magnetic particles
Les nanotubes de carbone (CNT) à basse température se comportent comme des points quantiques pour lesquelles les niveaux électroniques deviennent quantifiés. Le transport électronique à travers une jonction-CNT est caractérisé par le phénomène de blocage de Coulomb, dont les spécificités dépendent du couplage entre le nanotube et les électrodes métalliques. Le blocage de Coulomb est extrêmement sensible au moindre changement électrostatique, faisant des jonctions-CNT de précis électromètres. Par exemple, si l'on couple un système magnétique à un nanotube, le transport électronique sera influencé par l'état de spin du système magnétique (effet magnéto-Coulomb). Ce projet de thèse présente des mesures de transport électrique sur un système hybride se composant d'un nanotube de carbone rempli de nanoparticules magnétiques (Fe). Ces mesures, réalisées à très basses températures (40 mK), ont permis de mettre en évidence le comportement hystérétique de la conductance en fonction du champ magnétique, et en particulier la présence de saut de conductance à champ magnétique fini. Nous expliquons ces résultats en termes d'effet magnéto-Coulomb : le renversement d'aimantation des particules de fer à champ magnétique fini provoquant une variation de charge effective due à l'effet Zeeman. Ces mesures sont une étape vers l'étude de l'anisotropie magnétique de nanoparticules individuelles.Carbon Nanotubes at low temperature behave as Quantum Dots for which charging processes become quantized, giving rise to Coulomb Blockade depending upon the coupling to the leads. Any small change in the electrostatic environment (tuned by the gate electrode) can induce shift of the stability diagram (so called Coulomb Diamonds) of the device, leading to conductivity variation of the Quantum Dot. A carbon nanotube can therefore be a very accurate electrometer. For example, if a magnetic system is electronically coupled to a nanotube, its electron conduction may be influenced by the spin state of the magnetic system (magneto- Coulomb effect). In this thesis, we report on the electrical transport measurements of such hybrid systems where a carbon nanotube is filled with magnetic nanoparticles such as Iron(Fe). We find that low-temperature (~40mK) current-voltage measurements of such devices can show a hysteretic behaviour in conductance with sharp jumps at certain magnetic fields. We explain the results in terms of the magneto-Coulomb effect where the spin flip of the iron island at non-zero magnetic field causes an effective charge variation in the Nanotube due to the Zeeman energy. Our studies are a step forward towards the study of the magnetic anisotropy of individual nanoparticles. We believe our findings have important implications for sensitive magnetic detectors to study the magnetization reversal of individual magnetic nanoparticle or molecule, even weakly coupled to a carbon nanotube

Three essays on innovation dynamics : category emergence, commercialization, and ethical governance of innovation
Cette thèse contient trois essais sur le thème de l'innovation au niveau de l'industrie et des différents aspects de l'innovation. Les essais contribuent à la littérature sur la théorie institutionnelle, les catégories, la commercialisation, l'évaluation, l'innovation responsable et la gouvernance de l'innovation. Au cours des dernières décennies, le monde a observé une vague de commercialisation qui a changé la façon dont de nombreuses actions sont menées. L'une des principales caractéristiques a été l'abandon par l'État de son contrôle sur de nombreuses activités qui sont désormais réalisées sur le marché. Cette vague de commercialisation a donné naissance à des formes d'organisation uniques et innovantes au sein des industries existantes. Parmi les résultats de ces formes d'organisation innovantes, on peut citer l'émergence de nouvelles catégories, l'hybridation des catégories existantes, les tensions entre les différents acteurs en raison des hybridations, l'émergence de nouveaux systèmes d'évaluation des performances et les nouvelles questions soulevées sur des bases éthiques et morales concernant l'application de ces innovations. Dans cette thèse, j'ai tenté d'aborder certains de ces aspects de l'innovation au niveau de l'industrie.This dissertation contains three essays on the theme of industry-level innovation and different aspects of innovation. The essays contribute to the literatures of institutional theory, categories, commercialization, evaluation, responsible innovation, and governance of innovation. Over the past few decades, the world has observed a wave of commercialization which has changed the way many actions are performed. One of the key features has been that of the state relinquishing its control over many activities that are now performed in the market. This wave of commercialization has given rise to some unique and innovative forms of organization within existing industries. Some of the outcomes of these innovative forms of organizations are the emergence of new categories, hybridization of existing categories, tensions between various stakeholders because of the hybridizations, emergence of new performance evaluation systems, and new questions being raised on ethical and moral grounds concerning the application of such innovations. In this dissertation I have attempted to address some of these aforementioned aspects of industry-level innovation
