    α7β1 integrin regulation of skeletal muscle growth in response to mechanical loading

    The α7β1 integrin has been proposed to serve as a mechanosensor and essential regulator of myofiber remodeling given its localization at the membrane and primary role in adhering the outer extracellular matrix to the inner actin cytoskeleton. However, additional work is necessary to affirm a primary role for the α7β1 integrin subunit in the regulation of skeletal muscle mass in response to mechanical loading. The purpose of this study was to 1) to utilize an automated computer program (SMASH) to reassess myofiber cross-sectional area in previously collected samples, and 2) to determine the mechanism by which the α7β1 integrin can promote myofiber growth following a mechanical stimulus. Aim 1 used an automated computer program to re- analyze myofiber CSA and confirm a role for the α7β1 integrin in myofiber hypertrophy following chronic mechanical loading. Aim 2 assessed potential mechanisms for integrin-mediated growth in response to chronic mechanical load, including upregulation of Yes-associated protein (YAP) content in skeletal muscle. The results from this study suggest that 1) the use of an automated computed program (SMASH) provides results that are comparable to manual measurement, 2) chronic mechanical loading elicits an increase in fiber splitting that may result in an underestimation of myofiber CSA, and 3) overexpression of the α7 integrin subunit increases baseline YAP content in skeletal muscle, an event that may influence the rate of myofiber hypertrophy in response to load.     An exploratory descriptive study on the perceptions of grief and spirituality among master of social work and master of divinity students, 1997

    The overall objective of this study was to examine Master of Social Work and Master of Divinity students' perceptions towards grief and spirituality. An exploratory descriptive research design was used in the study. A self-administered 26 item questionnaire was given to thirty graduate students who attended Clark Atlanta University and the Interdenominational Theological Center. Fifteen participants varying in age and religious beliefs participated from each institution. The study was an attempt to explore and understand the grief and spirituality needs of these future professionals in order to enhance their chosen services to others. The study showed that there was no statistical significant difference in grief and spirituality among Master of Social Work students and Master of Divinity students. The T-test on spirituality 2.02 and 2.42 revealed a difference among Divinity students

Open resources can address the gap in teaching timely and critical scholarly communication topics—copyright in teaching and research environments, academic publishing, emerging modes of scholarship, impact measurement—while increasing access to resources and equitable participation in education and scholarly communication. Scholarly Communication Librarianship and Open Knowledge is an open textbook and practitioner’s guide that collects theory, practice, and case studies from nearly 80 experts in scholarly communication and open education.     The effects of Kappa Opioid Agonists on Ocular Hydrodynamics, 2000

    Opioid receptors have been demonstrated to modulate various functions in the eye. This research was designed to determine and compare the effects of kappa agonists on ocular hydrodynamics. Experiments were done to determine the effects of ICI 204,448 (ICI), which is not capable of penetrating the blood-brain barrier, and U-62066 (spiradoline) on: 1) intraocular pressure (IOP) and pupil diameter (PD), 2) pre- (neuronal) and postjunctional sites of action, and 3) atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) levels in aqueous humor. Dark-adapted New Zealand White (NZW) male, rabbits were used in all experiments. IOP (mmHg) was measured by a pneumatonometer and PDs (mm) were measured by an optistick before each IOP reading. Baseline readings were taken at 1/2 and 0 hours prior to drug adminstration. Post-drug measurements were made at 1/2, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 hours after topical drug application. The release of norepinephrine was measured from perfused ICBs and expressed as the percent change of the control. Cyclic AMP concentrations in the ICBs and ANP levels in aqueous were quantified by radioimmunoassay techniques. The kappa antagonist, norbinaltorphimine (nor-BNI), was applied 30 minutes prior to agonist application in all experiments. ICI and spiradoline decreased IOP in a dose-dependent manner in normal rabbits, but only spiradoline showed significant changes in PD. Both kappa agonist inhibited the release of NE from perfused ICBs. Isoproterenol-stimulated cAMP levels in ICBs were lowered by both kappa receptor agonists. ANP levels in the aqueous humor increased in response to the kappa opioid agonists. These data suggest that spiradoline and ICI lower IOP by activating kappa opioid receptors in the eye. The effect of spiradoline on PD indicates that this kappa agonist activates receptors in the eye and/or the brain. The inhibition of NE release and cAMP accumulation in the ICB, suggests pre- and postjunctional sites of action for kappa agonists. The increase of ANP levels in aqeous suggests a role for ANP in lowering IOP. If these drugs can be shown to lower IOP safely and effectively in humans, then they may be utilized in the treatment of glaucoma

    BODIES OF TECHNOLOGY: PERFORMATIVE FLESH, PLEASURE AND SUBVERSION IN CYBERSPACE

    This article contextualises the body in cyberspace, using the specific examples of the performative body and the social networking site Facebook. Technology is established as a process which continually unfolds and illuminates new understandings of subjectivity, unfurling in parallel with the performative body – and gendered identities – that Judith Butler articulates. Here, the author conducts a close analysis of the technological affordances of Facebook as a site that fosters the construction of a phantasmic, performative subject that Butler describes. This argument relies on an understanding of technology and the body as having their meaning dynamically constituted through mutual interconnection – an understanding of interface that is taken from the theoretical work of Donna Haraway and Vicki Kirby. The purpose of seeking out the performative body in cyberspace is to explore the possibility of technologically-derived, subversive bodies. This is done by examining the emergence of pleasure in human engagement with technology. This pleasure suggests that subjects are enticed by the creative possibilities which technology offers, as it leads to regenerations that, under the right conditions, yield subversive bodies.</jats:p

    Knotless bidirectional barbed versus smooth polypropylene three-loop pulley sutures for repair of canine gastrocnemius tendon

    Canine common calcaneal (Achilles) tendon injury is a well-known cause of lameness in the dog. The Achilles tendon complex is primarily composed of the gastrocnemius tendon, with smaller contributions from the superficial digital flexor tendon and the common tendon of the biceps femoris, semitendinosus and gracilis muscles. The primary goal in tendon repair is to provide strength appropriate to allow healing while minimizing gap formation. A large gap (>3 mm) in repaired tendon results in slower healing and decreased ultimate tensile strength (UTS) at 6 weeks, compared to those with a smaller gap. Barbed sutures are a relatively recent entry into the veterinary field. These sutures have found multiple applications in human medicine, including digital flexor tendon repair, as well as gastrointestinal, gynecologic, urologic and cosmetic surgeries. Recent veterinary studies demonstrate that knotless barbed sutures have supraphysiologic, and in some cases, increased load to failure compared to conventional sutures in selected soft tissue surgeries. Each barb provides a small component of the total anchoring force which cumulatively can exceed the tensile strength of the smooth monofilament sutures. The barbs increase suture-tendon interface and theoretically distribute load more evenly throughout the construct, as well as minimize the chances of suture pull-out as a mode of failure. As these sutures are processed from existing materials and result in a smaller core diameter, it is recommended to select a barbed suture 1-2 sizes larger than the appropriate smooth suture, with the expectation of at least equal tensile strength. We hypothesized that a knotless barbed polypropylene repair would have increased strength compared to a smooth knotted polypropylene repair when placed in the clinically utilized three-loop pulley (3LP) suture pattern in an in-vitro model for gastrocnemius tendon repair. Common calcaneal tendons and calcaneii were obtained as paired units from pelvic limbs of adult, sexually intact mixed breed dogs euthanized for unrelated reasons and free of gross evidence of orthopedic disease. Extraneous tissues were removed, leaving only the gastrocnemius tendon. Each bone-tendon unit was wrapped in towels moistened with saline (0.9% NaCl) solution and stored at -20⁰C until testing. The units were thawed to room temperature overnight prior to testing. Tensile testing was performed with a servohydraulic testing machine equipped with a 2 kN load cell. Constructs were positioned in the testing machine at a 135⁰ angle to mimic physiological load direction. Tendons were preloaded to 2 N, allowing precise transection 3 cm proximal to the tuber calcaneii. One of each paired unit was randomly selected to receive a 3LP repair with 2-0 USP smooth monofilament polypropylene suture while the other received 3LP repair with 1 USP bi-directional barbed monofilament polypropylene suture. Ultimate tensile strength, load to 1 mm and 3 mm gap, and mode of failure were recorded with a material testing system synchronized with digital video. This data was analyzed for normal distribution and compared with Student’s T-tests. If data was non-normally distributed, Mann-Whitney U tests were performed. Significance was set at P ≤ 0.05 for all tests. Thirty-three paired limbs were obtained from dogs weighing between 15.9-27.2 kg (average 21.8 kg, range 16.8-27 kg). Significantly higher ultimate tensile strength (p<0.001) for smooth (40.5 ± 10.6 N) compared to the barbed suture repairs (28.6 ± 7.1 N) was noted. The 1mm gap load for the barbed repair (17.2 ± 5.3 N) was significantly less (p<0.001) than the smooth repair (26.8 ± 7.1 N). The 3mm gap load for the barbed (25.3 ± 5.7 N) was also significantly lower (p<0.001) than the smooth repair (35.1 ± 9.4 N). Thirty-one (94%) out of thirty-three barbed sutures failed when the barbs reversed direction under tensile loading and the suture backed out from its initial placement. Two (6%) barbed sutures broke under tension during testing. With regards to the smooth polypropylene, 31/33 constructs failed by suture material pulling through the tendon. In these cases, the knot and suture material remained intact. The remaining two constructs failed by tendon tears proximal to the repair. The results demonstrate that the load results at each individual sample point (1 mm gap, 3 mm gap, and UTS) were significantly lower for the barbed than the smooth polypropylene repairs. The p-values for each normally distributed data set were actually an order of magnitude beyond the threshold of significance established prior to testing with our power analysis (P <0.001).     Linda Hasselstrom (rancher and author of Windbreak, Going Over East, Land Circle, and Caught by One Wing), Gaydell Collier (rancher, director of the Crook County Public Library in Wyoming, and co-author of several books on horse training), and Nancy Curtis (rancher and owner-operator of the highly acclaimed High Plains Press) combined talents to edit Leaning into the Wind: Women Write from the Heart of the West. Contributors-of which there are at least two hundred-to this anthology of western women\u27s writings offer a counter-balance to High Plains stereotypes popularized by those historians and writers who erased women\u27s existence from the West, and, to quote Hasselstrom in her introduction, jumbled legitimate accounts [of the West] with pure hogwash from cheap western novels. Leaning into the Wind is a welcome addition to the growing body of women\u27s ranch writing. Following on the boot heels of such works as Hasselstrom\u27s Land Circle, Kathleen Norris\u27s Dakota: A Spiritual Geography, Teresa Jordan\u27s Riding the White Horse Home, and Gretel Ehrlich\u27s The Solace of Open Spaces, the collection explores themes involving women\u27s strength and their sturdy relationship with the land and a ranching life. As an anthology, the book distinguishes itself from much contemporary women\u27s ranch writing by bringing toge~her in a single text a diverse chorus of western women\u27s voices in dialogue, a dialogue that continually supports, reinforces, debates, and disagrees with itself. Also to its credit, many of its entries are not by women who define themselves as writers. These women are first and foremost ranchers, farmers, park service workers, and veterinarians, among other land and animal related professionals, who share with us the honest realities of their lives. Their words rise from almost every type of text, from handwritten manuscripts, letters, diary entries, reminiscences, photo albums, and notebooks, to self published histories, essays, and articles. In choosing entries the editors judged the writing on clarity of expression rather than grammar or political correctness. A lack of scholarly style in some entries is a blessing: the women whose stories are recorded here are authentic, as are their idiom and intonation. Leaning into the Wind offers fresh perspectives on ranch life, detailing the experiences of rural women who have made their livelihoods from the land

    Examining the Effects of an Emotional Intelligence Intervention on First Year College

    abstract: The National Center for Educational Statistics (2018) reported that only 59% of first time college students will retain from their first to second year. The institutional effects of retention are wide ranging and nationwide colleges and universities are seeking effective methods of improving the retention of first year students. Isaak, Graves, & Mayers (2007) identified both emotional intelligence and resilience as important factors contributing to student retention. According to Daniel Goleman (1995), emotional intelligence is integral to success in life, and a significant relationship has been found with grades and successful acclimation to the college environment (Ciarrochi, Deane, & Anderson, 2002; Liff, 2003; and Pekrun, 2006). This study explored the impact of an emotional intelligence (EI) intervention within a First Year Experience course on students’ emotional intelligence, resilience, and academic success. Forty four students at a small, private, liberal arts institution in the southeastern United States participated in the EI intervention and were measured for EI and resilience utilizing the EQ-i 2.0 and the 5x5RS measures as pre and posttests. Based on the results of this study, the EI intervention may have positive implications on EI, resilience and academic success.
