Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

‘Literature can act as a mirror of society’. This is very much true about the writing of all great writers, Sarat Chandra chattopadhyay being one among them. The vast corpus of his writing- novels, short stories, essays- depicted superstition, social injustice and condition of women of his time. But behind all his writings was his silent intention to inform and educate his readers about evils of society as he saw it. Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay was also a very socially conscious person and as a very popular writer, he did not write various stories, novels and essays only for the purpose of writing literature, but also from his firm belief that it was his moral duty for creating social consciousness against various social evils. He firmly believed that, one should try to remove various injustices and superstitions from society by writing against them. Sarat Chandra believed that the root of social evils and problems stem from socio-economic discrimination, the disturbing condition of lower caste and class, caste discrimination, the way women were treated in a patriarchal society, particularly in contemporary Hindu society. These social evils were so firmly rooted in the minds of people that it was impossible for people to get rid of these social evils and malpractices unless they were completely uprooted.              In the article under discussion, there will be an attempt to analyze how Sarat Chandra chattopadhyay, through his various novels, stories and articles, tried to form a public opinion among his readers by writing against various social evils and various social injustices. In short, the main aim of this research paper is to reveal how his social consciousness has been revealed through the Sarat Chandra\u27s literature, that is, how much Sarat Chandra was a socially conscious person, in the light of the literature he created

    The Reflection of Communal Harmony in Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Literature: An Analytical Study/ শরৎচন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায়ের সাহিত্যে সাম্প্রদায়িক সম্প্রীতির প্রতিফলন : একটি বিশ্লেষণ

Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay is one of the legendary authors in Bengali literature, whose works consistently address socio-economic disparities, the establishment of women\u27s rights, and above all, the promotion of humanitarian values and communal harmony. A closer analysis of his writings reveals that during the first half of the 20th century, when British imperialism exacerbated communal tensions and disrupted life in India, Sarat Chandra endeavoured through his literature to foster Hindu-Muslim unity, religious tolerance, and mutual respect.           His personal life and his novels and short stories show him as a devout humanitarian who believed that service to the nation was the true religion, transcending narrow religious divisions. His anti-communal stance and mind-set are evident in every aspect of his literary work. He sensitively discussed communal conflicts and emphasized the urgent need to resolve them. However, it is surprising that certain so-called "progressive" literary critics of our country did not recognize his worth. Instead, they labelled him as "conservative," a "staunch Hindu," "anti-Islam," or even "Muslim-hater" and "communal." These critics cited various statements by Sarat Chandra to support their claims.            The purpose of this research paper is to examine from a historical perspective how justified it is to accuse Sarat Chandra of being ‘communal’ or ‘anti-Muslim’ and to assess the validity of such statements within the political context of his time. Furthermore, this research will explore how Sarat Chandra\u27s literary works reflected communal harmony, the historical context behind his writings, and how he encouraged people to transcend religious boundaries and embrace unity through his literary creations

Time Delay Compensation in Networked Control System

    Get PDF
Networked control system is a special type of distributed control system where control loop is enclosed by communication medium. Networked Control System (NCS) suffers from the networked induced delay which may be induced in the forward path as well as in the feedback path. This delay is variable in nature. So if a controller is designed without considering the delays or considering the fixed delay then system performance will be degraded and in the worst case the system become unstable. To compensate the network induced variable transporting delay,a number of methods have been proposed in the literature such as robust control, Smith Predictor and Inteligent control theory. But there are few works reported in literature that employ Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) to compensate the networked induced delays.Firstly an LQR controller is designed to compensate the networked induced variable delay which is varied up to a maximum value. Then an LQG controller is designed to compensate the networked induced delay in noisy environment. Here the controller is the same controller used in LQR technique. Only difference between the standard LQR and the LQG controller said now is that it uses Kalman Filter to estimate the plant output using noisy measurement. Then an Model Predictive Controller (MPC) controller is designed using Laguerre network considering the constraints on control input and on the rate of control input. An integrator plant is considered for simulation where the above three controllers are applied. From the simulation result, it is observed that LQR gives a better step response but MPC has better disturbance rejection capacity. To validate the controllers in real-time, an experiment has been conducted in the Labrotory. In the experimental setup using one PC is considered as controller and other one is considered as plant. They are connected through an Ethernet network. From the real time experiment results it is seen that LQR exibits superior delay compensation performance
