    Publication productivity of Indian scientist (R.G. Rastogi) has been documented. Scientometric analysis of 312 papers by Ram Gopal Rastogi published during 1954 to 1992 in various domains: (a) Luni -solar activity and quiet -time E & F- region (57); (b) Equatorial electric field and low and mid latitude iof:osphere (78); (c) Ionospheric E- region irregularities (19); (dj Ionospheric F- region irregularities (32); and (e) Magnetic disturbance effects on the equatorial low and mid latitude ionosphere (23) were analysed. Interdomainery contents and of the number of papers: a+b were 36; b+c and b+d were 20 each; b+e were 16;. c+e were 5; a+e were 3; d+e were 2; and a+d had only one publication. Highest collaborations were with H. Chandra (61), M.R. Deshpande (42), and G. Sethia (19) out of his total 97 collaborators. His highest productivity was during 1978 with 28 papers followed by 19 papers during 1977. The core journals preferred by him for publishing papers were: Indian Journal of Radio & Space Physics, India, and Journal of Atomic & Terrestrial Physics, UK (59 each), followed by Proceedings of the Indian Academy of Sciences, India (34). Most prolific title keywords with their frequencies were: Ionosphere (92); Equatorial (61); F-region (53); Equatorial electrojet region (40), and Magnetic equator (30)

    A study was carried out from March 2016 to February 2017 to investigate the diversity of fishes and the conservation status of Bochamari Beel, a natural wetland of Cooch Behar District, West Bengal, India.  The study revealed the occurrence of 40 species of fishes belonging to 31 genera under six orders and 15 families.  Cyprinidae was the dominant family with 14 species followed by Channidae with four species, Ambassidae and Bagridae with three species each, Nandidae, Mastacembelidae, Belontiidae, Siluridae and Clariidae with two species each whereas Cobitidae, Belonidae, Gobiidae, Anabantidae, Tetraodontidae and Notopteridae were represented by a single species each.  The status of species of this beel included one Endangered species, one Vulnerable species and four Near Threatened species.  The maximum fish diversity was recorded in the monsoon season (H’=2.876) as compared with pre monsoon (H’=2.124) and post monsoon (H’ =1.735).  The evenness index varied from 0.640 (post monsoon) to 0.822 (monsoon), which indicates uneven distribution of fishes in this beel.  Indiscriminate fishing throughout the year, along with extensive weed infestation could be responsible for depletion of fish diversity in this beel.</jats:p

    Applicability of the Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model Data for Basin-Scale Spatiotemporal Drought Assessment

    Drought directly impacts the living organisms and environment, and thereby, its assessment is essential. Different drought indices require different data, which can be obtained based on models or in-situ measurements, demanding a significant amount of effort. Using remotely sensed (RS) data from satellites can facilitate this data acquisition. Nowadays, more and more satellite techniques are rising, highlighting the need to assess the accuracy of their data and the reliability of the results obtained by employing them. The Wet-environment Evapotranspiration Precipitation Standardized Index (WEPSI) has shown good performance in drought monitoring and assessment, especially for agricultural purposes. This chapter employs the Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model (GLEAM) data to investigate its applicability in the Lempa River basin drought assessment using WEPSI. In this order, evaluated data obtained from the Water Evaluation and Planning system (WEAP) were used as the basis for comparison. Precisely, a comparison was made with GLEAM and WEAP-based data as well as WEPSI time series based on these two datasets. The results show a relatively high similarity between these two datasets and calculated WEPSI drought indices.     138-143Fluoride is the organic and inorganic compound of the element fluorine, has detrimental effect to all animals including fish at higher concentration. Ground water with elevated concentration of fluoride is a major global problem including India. On the other hand, Morinda citrifolia (also called ‘Noni’ in Polynesia) is a medicinal plant, has antioxidative, anti-inflammatory and immunostimulatory properties. The ameliorating effect of M. citrifolia fruit extract dietary supplementation against fluoride induced toxicity on the growth performance, haematological parameters, and fluoride accumulation in the muscular tissue was investigated in the freshwater fish, Cyprinus carpio L. for 35 days in triplicate. One hundred and twenty acclimated C. carpio fingerlings were randomly allocated into five experimental groups (Groups I, II, III, IV and V) each with 24 fish divided into three replicates (eight fish/replicate). Group I (Control) and II (Toxic control or negative control) were provided with basal/control diet, whereas groups III, IV, and V were provided with 0.25% (2.5 g/kg), 0.50% (5.0 g/kg) and 0.75% (7.5 g/kg) M. citrifolia fruit extract supplemented diet respectively. All groups except for group I were exposed to 10% of the LC50 of fluoride. Selected growth and haematological parameters were estimated. The fluoride content in the muscular tissue of fish was also estimated following SPADNS method. Results revealed that exposure of sublethal concentration of fluoride significantly (P <0.05) reduced the growth performance and haematological parameters in Gr. II (toxic control) compared to the Gr. I (control). However, M. citrifolia dietary supplementation significantly (P <0.05) improved fluoride induced alteration of growth performance and haematological parameters of fish in the groups III, IV and V compared to Gr. II. Morinda citrifolia fruit extract dietary supplementation also significantly (P <0.05) decreased the accumulation fluoride in the muscular tissue of fish in groups III, IV and V compared to the Gr. II (toxic control). In conclusion, M. citrifolia dietary supplementation ameliorates the fluoride toxicity by preventing the accumulation of fluoride in the muscular tissue of the fish. The M. citrifolia dietary supplementation at 0.25% showed the best response, hence it is considered as the optimum dose

    Fishing gears operated in lentic and lotic water bodies of Cooch Behar district, West Bengal, India

    619-625A study was carried out to investigate different types of existing fishing gears employed by fishermen in lentic and lotic water bodies namely beels, ponds and rivers of Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, India. Observations revealed that various fishing gears are based on one or more factor such as behavior of fishes, microhabitat of fishes, physiography of water body, seasons of a year and so on. In the district of Cooch Behar about 22 types of fishing gears were documented, amongst them 8 are categorized as Net fishing gears, 2 as Tackles and 12 as Miscellaneous gears. Most of the fishing gears are fabricated by local people and fishermen with the help of locally available materials. The very small mesh size, of some fishing nets, catches all size groups of fishes and in turn results in depletion of fish diversity in the beels, ponds and rivers of Cooch Behar district

    Acute toxicity of fluoride and aluminium on the freshwater fish, Cyprinus carpio L.

    150-154Fluoride is a trace element which has beneficial effect at lower concentration but detrimental at higher concentration. The fluoride contamination in ground water is a major global problem. Similarly, aluminium is the most abundant metal of the earth, highly toxic to all organisms. In the present study, we investigated the acute toxicity of fluoride and aluminium on three month old fingerlings of Cyprinus carpio L. in hard water (Hardness 125 mg/L of CaCO3) under static renewal bioassay. The 96 h LC50 value of the fluoride and aluminium were 675.615 and 224.214 mg/L, respectively. There was a significant correlation (P <0.01) between mortality rate of C. carpio with all concentrations of fluoride as well as aluminium. The exposure time (24, 48, 72 and 96 h) and different concentration of fluoride (680, 684, 686 and 692 mg/L) and aluminium (228, 229, 231 and 232 mg/L) was also significantly correlated (P <0.05). The different abnormal behaviour displayed by the fluoride and aluminium exposed fishes were erratic swimming movements, rapid opercular activity and excessive secretion of mucous. The safe level of concentrations of fluoride and aluminium were 6.75 and 2.24 μg/L, respectively. The LC50 values of fluoride and aluminium of the present study may be useful in deriving water quality standards in West Bengal
