Evidence for a role of nitric oxide in iron homeostasis in plants
Nitric oxide (NO), once regarded as a poisonous air pollutant, is now understood as a regulatory molecule essential for several biological functions in plants. In this review, we summarize NO generation in different plant organs and cellular compartments, and also discuss the role of NO in iron (Fe) homeostasis, particularly in Fe-deficient plants. Fe is one of the most limiting essential nutrient elements for plants. Plants often exhibit Fe deficiency symptoms despite sufficient tissue Fe concentrations. NO appears to not only up-regulate Fe uptake mechanisms but also makes Fe more bioavailable for metabolic functions. NO forms complexes with Fe, which can then be delivered into target cells/tissues. NO generated in plants can alleviate oxidative stress by regulating antioxidant defense processes, probably by improving functional Fe status and by inducing post-translational modifications in the enzymes/proteins involved in antioxidant defense responses. It is hypothesized that NO acts in cooperation with transcription factors such as bHLHs, FIT, and IRO to regulate the expression of enzymes and proteins essential for Fe homeostasis. Civil-Military Relations and Military Effectiveness in India
This chapter looks into India's civil-military relations and its impact on India's military effectiveness. It discusses the theory of civil-military relations and identifies that while Huntington's 'bjective control' best describes civil-military relations in India, it does not, contrary to Huntington's claim, maximize military effectiveness. Borrowing from Risa Brook's approach, the author analyses Indian military effectiveness by examining its four crucial determinants-weapons procurement, defence planning, integration and human resource development. He argues that the current structure of civil-military relations, more accurately described as an 'absent dialogue', has an adverse impact on its military effectiveness. While the Indian state has acknowledged some of these problems and has made some attempts at defence reforms, more forceful political intervention is required.</p
Assessment of Articular Cartilage by Second Harmonic Microscopy: Challenges and Opportunities
Second harmonic microscopy (SHM) has emerged as a powerful non-destructive optical imaging modality that has high potential to perform the advanced structural characterization of intact articular cartilage. This article provides the current status, opportunities, and challenges of SHM for the use in cartilage evaluation. A novel perspective on SHM is being addressed that includes the reason, need and the importance of SHM in the assessment of articular cartilage. By taking the advantage of collagen specificity and high-resolution imaging, SHM can detect the structural and morphological changes in early stage cartilage damage that would otherwise be overlooked by standard clinical imaging methods such as radiography and arthroscopy. The current status of SHM for articular cartilage analysis and the major progress reported in recent literature are briefly described herein. We summarize the status of scientific efforts and the challenges that need to overcome before moving toward clinical applications of SHM in the context of cartilage evaluation.publishedVersionCopyright © 2019 Kumar and Kumar. Therapeutic efficacy of intracerebral hematopoietic stem cell gene therapy in an Alzheimer’s disease mouse model
: The conditions supporting the generation of microglia-like cells in the central nervous system (CNS) after transplantation of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPC) have been studied to advance the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. Here, we explored the transplantation efficacy of different cell subsets and delivery routes with the goal of favoring the establishment of a stable and exclusive engraftment of HSPCs and their progeny in the CNS of female mice. In this setting, we show that the CNS environment drives the expansion, distribution and myeloid differentiation of the locally transplanted cells towards a microglia-like phenotype. Intra-CNS transplantation of HSPCs engineered to overexpress TREM2 decreased neuroinflammation, Aβ aggregation and improved memory in 5xFAD female mice. Our proof of concept study demonstrates the therapeutic potential of HSPC gene therapy for Alzheimer's disease

Management of stevens-johnson syndrome-toxic epidermal necrolysis: Looking beyond guidelines!
Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are severe cutaneous adverse reactions, which are mainly caused by drugs; and these are usually associated with high degree of morbidity and mortality. Recently, two detailed guidelines were published on the management of SJS/TEN, Indian guidelines and UK guidelines. Still, there is no consensus on the management of SJS/TEN. In this article, our aim is to conceptualize the management aspect of SJS/TEN considering Indian setup. Early discontinuation of all medicines, supportive measures (hydration, electrolytes, and care of denuded skin), corticosteroids and cyclosporine has been found to be useful. Oral provocation test is reserved for patients, who undergo complete remission and this is to be done after hospitalization, under strict vigilance. As there is no consensus, the treatment should be individualized on case to case basis
