    Non-destructive Evaluation of Food Products by Microwave and mmW Imaging

    Ensuring food safety and quality is a major concern in the food industry, as physical contamination can pose significant health risks to consumers, damage brand reputation, and lead to legal consequences. Common detection methods, such as X-ray inspection, have limitations, particularly in identifying contaminants like plastic, wood, and glass, which have low density and can be difficult to detect. This work explores an alternative solution based on microwave sensing, introducing a novel approach to contamination detection. The proposed system leverages low-power, non-ionizing microwave signals to identify foreign bodies without compromising food integrity or requiring extensive modifications to existing production lines. It offers a cost-effective and real-time inspection method, capable of operating in-line without interrupting the manufacturing process. The detection principle relies on analyzing how microwave signals interact with different materials, taking advantage of the dielectric contrast between contaminants and food products. A set of antennas surrounding the target captures signal variations, which are then processed to determine the presence of foreign objects. The system is designed to acquire data efficiently while maintaining compatibility with the speed and constraints of industrial food processing environments. Detecting contaminants in food and beverage products using scattering parameters involves solving an inverse problem, which is nonlinear and ill-posed. This process is computationally expensive and may not be suitable for real-time, in-line detection. In this research, we integrate Machine Learning (ML) techniques to overcome the challenges of the inverse problem and to automate the classification process. We investigate the robustness and effectiveness of different classifiers, such as Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) networks, by training them on large-scale datasets collected from experimental trials. These models learn to distinguish between uncontaminated and contaminated food items. The classifiers successfully identifies a variety of foreign materials, including different types of plastics, glass, and wood, demonstrating high accuracy across thousands of test cases. Furthermore, we extend our research to millimeter-Wave (mmW) imaging, investigating the integration of mmW systems with ML tools for nut inspection. The promising results achieved using mmW imaging and ML classification in agrifood applications, particularly for soft fruits like apples and peaches, inspire us to evaluate the effectiveness of this approach for more challenging cases—specifically, in-shell seeds such as almonds and walnuts. The results obtained in this thesis highlight the potential of the microwave/mmW-based system as a robust, scalable, and efficient solution for real-time food contamination detection and agrifood inspection. By integrating microwave sensing with machine learning, this approach offers a powerful alternative to traditional inspection methods, improving food safety and quality in industrial setting

    L’industrie agro-alimentaire, avec ses chaînes de production à grande échelle et le besoin croissant de traçabilité, est confrontée au problème du contrôle automatique de la qualité des produits qu’elle fournit. Un des enjeux majeurs est la mise en place d’un système de contrôle non destructif capable de traiter un grand volume en temps réel, afin de retirer de la chaîne les produits abîmés. Nous proposons un système d’imagerie microonde compatible avec une ligne de production industrielle. Le principal verrou scientifique réside dans l’identification du contaminant car il s’agit de résoudre un problème inverse mal posé. Nous avons montré expérimentalement qu’une classification à l’aide de SVM non-linéaire permettait d’avoir recours à un système temps-réel, compact et bi-bande fonctionnant entre 2,5-3,5 GHz pour les boissons, et entre 6-8 GHz pour la pâte à tartiner

    Translation and news making : a study of contemporary arabic television

    Arabic satellite television has recently attracted tremendous attention in both the academic and professional worlds, with a special interest in Aljazeera as a curious phenomenon in the Arab region. Having made a household name for itself worldwide with the airing of the Bin Laden tapes, Aljazeera has set out to deliberately change the culture of Arabic journalism, as it has been repeatedly stated by its current General Manager Waddah Khanfar, and to shake up the Arab society by raising awareness to issues never discussed on television before and challenging long-established social and cultural values and norms while promoting, as it claims, Arab issues from a presumably Arab perspective. Working within the meta-frame of democracy, this Qatari-based network station has been received with mixed reactions ranging from complete support to utter rejection in both the west and the Arab world. This research examines the social semiotics of Arabic television and the socio-cultural impact of translation-mediated news in Arabic satellite television, with the aim to carry out a qualitative content analysis, informed by framing theory, critical linguistic analysis, social semiotics and translation theory, within a re-mediation framework which rests on the assumption that a medium “appropriates the techniques, forms and social significance of other media and attempts to rival or refashion them in the name of the real" (Bolter and Grusin, 2000: 66). This is a multilayered research into how translation operates at two different yet interwoven levels: translation proper, that is the rendition of discourse from one language into another at the text level, and translation as a broader process of interpretation of social behaviour that is driven by linguistic and cultural forms of another medium resulting in new social signs generated from source meaning reproduced as target meaning that is bound to be different in many respects. The research primarily focuses on the news media, news making and reporting at Arabic satellite television and looks at translation as a reframing process of news stories in terms of content and cultural values. This notion is based on the premise that by its very nature, news reporting is a framing process, which involves a reconstruction of reality into actualities in presenting the news and providing the context for it. In other words, the mediation of perceived reality through a media form, such as television, actually modifies the mind’s ordering and internal representation of the reality that is presented. The research examines the process of reframing through translation news already framed or actualized in another language and argues that in submitting framed news reports to the translation process several alterations take place, driven by the linguistic and cultural constraints and shaped by the context in which the content is presented. These alterations, which involve recontextualizations, may be intentional or unintentional, motivated or unmotivated. Generally, they are the product of lack of awareness of the dynamics and intricacies of turning a message from one language form into another. More specifically, they are the result of a synthesis process that consciously or subconsciously conforms to editorial policy and cultural interpretive frameworks. In either case, the original message is reproduced and the news is reframed. For the case study, this research examines news broadcasts by the now world-renowned Arabic satellite television station Aljazeera, and to a lesser extent the Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation (LBC) and Al- Arabiya where access is feasible, for comparison and crosschecking purposes. As a new phenomenon in the Arab world, Arabic satellite television, especially 24-hour news and current affairs, provides an interesting area worthy of study, not only for its immediate socio-cultural and professional and ethical implications for the Arabic media in particular, but also for news and current affairs production in the western media that rely on foreign language sources and translation mediation for international stories

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
