    Portraits of Leonardo da Vinci

    No full text
Using an iterative method, applied to image processing, a portrait of a young man, probably a self-portrait of Leonardo da Vinci, is restored. Merging this portrait with the self-portrait in red chalk, we can have the features of a middle-aged Leonardo. This digital portrait can be compared with the image of Plato, depicted by Raphael in the Scuola di Atene, generally considered as a portrait of Leonardo. The iterative method used for the image processing had been developed by the author on previous iterative calculations used to solve the Boltzmann equatio

When University Meets the Needs of The Territory: The case of the Edge Project Presentation

    No full text
The participation of Universities in the promotion of territorial development is one of the main paradigms of innovation of university work in the last twenty years (Moscati, Vaira 2008; Charle, Souliè 2008). But, if the design of the innovation model appears to be defined from the beginning, its implementation mechanisms and results appear territorially heterogeneous and, in many cases, contribute to reproducing the well-known territorial inequalities (Regini, Trigilia 2019). The institutional learning of the innovation in which universities are protagonists could be reconstructed through the contributions offered by the rich literature on local development and, more recently, by innovation studies (Cersosimo, Wolleb 2001; Trigilia 2007). But, it could also be reconstructed by trying to reverse the method of analysis, trying to understand how the actors involved in the process of change perceive innovation and observing what happens in informal moments such as those in which the results of research are returned to the territory. This contribution aims to capture the dynamics of institutional innovation in university work during an informal moment of its manifestation: an online webinar which presented the results of the EDGE project, a European project on employment inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in which Universities, social cooperatives, and bodies specialised in the training of people with disabilities from different European countries participated. The contribution aims to bring to light a bottom-up innovation path, identifying the participants of the webinar and the communicative situation that allows the different participants to mutually recognize their institutional roles and to experience an active involvement in the innovation process. This study is divided into two sections. In the first, the recurring elements in the contributions of the various participants in the webinar and the inter-individual logic that supported the various contributions are highlighted. At this stage particular emphasis will be given to the identification and collective communication of common needs. A second moment is instead dedicated to the institutional pre-conditions and to the reciprocal interinstitutional perceptions that structured the webinar. The EDGE project presentation is only the final moment of a research project. However, its interinstitutional and intersubjective analysis could highlight the forms of interinstitutional cooperation most suitable for intercepting territorial needs and the possible responses that Universities can contribute to them

Ileoanal pouch cancers in ulcerative colitis and familial adenomatous polyposis: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    No full text
Introduction: Restorative proctocolectomy results in the formation of a pouch that adapts to a more colonic phenotype. The incidence of cancer of the pouch is thought to be low with most societal guide-lines differing on their recommendations for surveillance. Aims: We conducted a systematic review with meta-analysis to report the incidence of cancer in all pouch patients. Methods: The Embase, Embase classic and PubMed databases were searched between June 1979- June 2021. A random effects model was performed to find the pooled incidence of pouch cancer. In addition, we also looked for risk factors for pouch cancers. Results: Forty-six studies were included. In 19,964 patients with Ulcerative Colitis (UC) the pooled inci-dence of pouch cancer was 0.0030 (95% CI: 0.0016-0.0 055). In 3741 patients with Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) the pooled incidence of pouch cancer was 0.01 (95% CI: 0.01 - 0.02). In UC most pouch cancers were found to occur in the pouch body (0.59 (95% CI: 0.29-0.84)). Conclusions: The findings suggest that the pooled incidence of pouch cancer in UC is similar to that which was previously published, and this is the first meta-analysis to report a pooled incidence for pouch cancer in FAP

The Da Vinci Satellite project is a non-profit initiative started at the Delft University of Technology to inspire and enthuse the youth to learn more about technology and space travel. The team does this by focussing on demystifying space and making it a fun and engaging subject. The non-profit student team is divided into different sub teams, two of which are the technical team and the educational team. The technical team has been building a 2U CubeSat with two payloads that have been designed to support educational packages for children from primary schools and high schools. The educational team works to make these educational modules available for schools all around the world such that children have the opportunity to interact directly with space via The Da Vinci Satellite.Space Systems Egineerin

Co-constructing Good Projects: the Functions of Sociological Knowledge in Educational Projects

    No full text
How can an educational project dedicated to early childhood contribute to eliciting democratic ways of thinking and acting? Following the sociological-pragmatist tradition, the author investigates institutional conditions that coud promote a good project. The proposed thesis revolves around the formation of collective, theoretical and experiential knowledge in the production of which sociological knowledge plays a critical-comprehensive function and a participatory function. The former contributes to the historical-systemic understanding of local social needs, while the second links the quality of a project to a theory of social justice that is not merely redistributive but emancipatory, open to the discovery of the world and the construction of attentive educational relationships
