Author Spotlight: Rossella Palma
Dr. Rossella Palma ([email protected]) is a general surgeon who is currently a PhD student in the Section of
Experimental and Clinical Hepato-Gastroenterology at the
“Sapienza” University of Rome. She is primarily interested
in diagnostic and operative endoscopy for the treatment of
gastrointestinal diseases. She plans to pursue an academic
career following her PhD studies

These lines were pronounced by the author on February 7, 2021 in commemoration of the 188th anniversary of the birth of Ricardo Palma, in an event organized by the Institute that carries his name and is the academic center of the Ricardo Palma University.
The author does not refer to the writer’s biography, nor does he analyze his Peruvian traditions, his links with politics or his work as a journalist. He just takes a general look to rescue Palma’s importance in our literature and culture in general by supporting the classic nature he holds.
Keywords: intellectual, journalism, politics, literature, biography.Estas líneas fueron pronunciadas por el autor el 7 de febrero de 2021 con motivo de conmemorarse el 188 aniversario del nacimiento de Ricardo Palma, en un acto organizado por el Instituto que lleva su nombre y es órgano académico de la Universidad Ricardo Palma.
El autor no se refiere a la biografía del escritor, tampoco realiza un análisis de sus tradiciones peruanas, ni de su vinculación con la política, ni su labor como periodista. Se limita a echar una mirada general para rescatar la importancia de Palma en nuestras letras y la cultura en general a partir de sostener el carácter de clásico que ostenta.

Palma y Zorrilla
This article describes the relationship of Peruvian romantic authors with Spanish literature, with special emphasis on Jose Zorrilla’s connections with the group of “bohemians” that Ricardo Palma portrays in his book La bohemia de mi tiempo, and mainly Zorrilla’s relationship with the author of Tradiciones. The two writers had a fluid epistolary exchange and they met in Madrid when Palma was there as a Peruvian envoy for the celebrations of Columbus’ fourth centenary. In addition to the social connections, Zorrilla’s literary influences on the writing of the “bohemians” and Palma himself are highlighted.En este artículo se describe la relación de los autores románticos peruanos con la literatura española, con especial atención en los vínculos de José Zorrilla con el grupo de «bohemios» que Ricardo Palma retrata en su libro La bohemia de mi tiempo y, principalmente, las relaciones de Zorrilla con el autor de las Tradiciones. Ambos escritores mantuvieron un fluido intercambio epistolar y se conocieron en Madrid cuando Palma estuvo allí como enviado peruano a las celebraciones del cuarto centenario colombino. In this article, the author analyzes the intellectual work of Ricardo Palma, identifying him as an intellectual figure that embodies the great representative Peruvian writer. From that location, he describes the relationship he had with different members of the Nine hundred generation, who recognized him as theirmaster and incarnation of the national soul. For this, the author uses firsthand sources, such as personal letters, and known bibliography.ResumenEn el presente artículo, el autor analiza la obra intelectual de Ricardo Palma identificándolo como una figura que encarna al gran escritor representativo de la nacionalidad peruana. Desde esa ubicación,describe la relación que tuvo con diferentes miembros de la generación del 900, quienes lo reconocieron como su maestro y encarnación del alma nacional. This text offers an overview of the reception, acceptance of the work of Ricardo Palma at various times in our history, from the publication of the first collection of the Peruvian Traditions (1872). There are some reactions of Peruvian critics and intellectuals about the work of the traditionist, although references are also made to those of other nationalities (Ibero-American), making references to the existing cultural and political environment. It concludes with the re-meaning of life and work of Palma, based on the actions of the Ricardo Palma Institute, in the new century, and its impact on the interest of the author of the traditions.ResumenEl presente texto ofrece un panorama de la recepción, aceptación o no de la obra de Ricardo Palma en diversos momentos de nuestra historia, a partir de la publicación de la primera colección de las Tradiciones Peruanas (1872). Se presentan algunas reacciones de los críticos e intelectuales peruanossobre la obra del tradicionista, aunque también se hacen referencias a los de otras nacionalidades (iberoamericanos), haciendo referencias al ambiente cultural existente y político. Se concluye con el re-significado de la vida y obra de Palma, a partir de las acciones del Instituto Ricardo Palma, en el nuevo siglo, y su impacto en el interés por el autor de las tradiciones.Palabras clave: lectura histórica, imaginario, tradicionista, apreciación social.

El olvidado plato criollo san Pedro y san Pablo en las Tradiciones de Ricardo Palma
This is a research work concerning the history of Peruvian cuisine, broadening theinformation included in La culinaria peruana en las Tradiciones de Ricardo Palma, written by the author and published in Aula Palma (vol. VI, Lima, Instituto Ricardo Palma, Ricardo Palma University, 2008, pp. 169-214). This essay offers information on the Creole dish called San Pedro y San Pablo (beans with rice), which is mentioned by Ricardo Palma in his Peruvian Traditions and whose name has been completely forgotten. The author reproduces old recipes and the dish is compared with traditional dishes from the Caribbean and Spain that bear some resemblance. Information about the bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and rice (Oryza sativa L.) is included.Este trabajo de investigación referente a la historia de la cocina peruana amplía la información contenida en “La culinaria peruana en las Tradiciones de Ricardo Palma”, texto escrito por el autor y publicado en Aula Palma (vol. VI., pp. 169-214, Instituto Ricardo Palma, Universidad Ricardo Palma, Lima, 2008). En el presente artículo se estudia el plato criollo llamado san Pedro y san Pablo (frejoles con arroz), mencionado por don Ricardo Palma en sus Tradiciones Peruanas y cuyo nombre ha sido completamente olvidado. Se reproducen recetas antiguas y se hace una comparación con otros potajes del Caribe y de España con los cuales tiene algún parecido.
